MMA NEWS | Benson Henderson Just Got Submitted In Grappling Tournament (Video)
UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, wasted little time getting back into competition following his UFC 144 title win over Frankie Edgar.
In this video we see Benson competing against Daniel Grippaudo at the 7th Arizona International Open in Phoenix, Arizona. Benson has never been submitted in an MMA match and while BJJ is vastly different than cage fighting, this video still makes a good conversation piece.

Smash Edgar again and send him to Feather…
Means nothing to get submitted outside the cage, all it says is you have some things to work on. The man who doesn’t lose doesn’t learn.
Makes me respect him as a Champ even more. Still competing in an entirely diff. sport. This brother is still hungry.
you’re a dickhead
i think he tapped just so he doesnt risk breaking his arm, theres no reason to keep trying to get out and risk an injury
+1^
+1 on name ^
Isn’t that why anyone taps ?
yes bit in hendos case it wont take risks where as in the cage he will as it will damage his record
nice armbar
That looked more like some type of omoplata to me, not an armbar.
my damn job blocked the video
Big Brother is Watching!
lol str8 up
yeeaahhh, send edgar to feather via smash!!
Can’t win them all. Why did they stand up the first time?
you have to have contact with the arm or collar of someone to pull guard in comp. I don’t think the guy maintained contact through the guard pull.
Thanks.
I was just about to post this. You’re fast Pedro! It would be awesome to see BJ Penn competing in BJJ again, just saying.
hell yea +100 he should do it
I hate Gi Jiu-jitsu. So different from no gi, and 100 times more frustrating. I already hate people grabbing my clothes from wrestling practice when any time it happens its considered cheating. But then to go into a sport where its not only legal but encouraged was way to anger inducing for me. No gi rocks though. LOVE IT! haha. I’m sure Bendo is much better without the Gi.
i feel u, and it is competition and all, but none the less, it is supposed to somewhat emulate real life scenarios, i mean it is how these arts developed. it seems gi could prove very useful, when compared to no gi in the actual event that u do have to defend urself in the street… but yea its competition i kno
unless u were at the beach or wherever u lived was so hot u chose not to wear a shirt
Doesn’t mean anything Elite grappling is different then Elite fighting everyone learns from a loss anyways props to the other guy sick arm bar
LOl, did you see the ref pulling the other two guys, on the other mat?
That was pretty funny haha
i enjoy JJ with the GI alot more. its way more technical with the diffrent grips and such.
That was pretty lame
He is just a brownbelt in a world where there are thousands of black belts +
bet it is a while befor he gets arm bared again. Nice armbar Daniel
I bet dude thinks he should do MMA now, lol nice ABar tho.
This means nothing in the cage. It’s alot harder to submit someone when they are throwing bombs at you.
oh arm bar is his weakness cant wait to see it used on him in the ufc
I dnt get why he kept turning to tha side when he was in the guys guard its like he was asking to get his back took he wasn’t even trying to break his guard it seemed…..can anybody shed some light on this?
Lex its the Wilson Hays pass to side controll , Ben needed to have controll of the loose arm ..
thanks for that ima have to look it up
I find it very impressive that Ben can be competitive in gi and no gi. Shows he’s got patience and works technique.
I don’t know anything about his opponent, but Ben trains in wrestling, jiu jitsu, and striking arts. He’s got to divide his attention between a bunch of different training. This other guy, could just be a jiu jitsu guy who’s spent the same amount of time Ben has spent training BJJ but focusing solely on bjj. Makes a world of difference.
seems more like a practice session but anywho, it’s good stuff…
this is just grappling guys, if the two were in the cage it would be a different outcome. Bendo would have GnP the guy to KTFO
Idk gi striker bj penn would go to brazil and compete and win! But kudos to bendo, it does make you better to compete in a specific discipline
The pass was called the Wilson Hays pass to side controll..
i would agree that this means nothing. there is nothing on the line. if there was, i’m sure there would have been more resistance. he appears to be a smart enough person to understand that a tournament is not going to pay his mortgage/rent so why risk injury and not tap.
“Benson has never been submitted in an MMA match”
Ummm… looks to me like he did in 2007. In fact I recently watched it on youtube. How hard is it to search that fact? Lazy written article.
Ya Pedro u uneducated
****
I competed In that tournament
Cool, how did you do?
ben has lost by sub before, his first loss was sub
i like hendersons sportsmanship how he can talk to his opponent and share a laugh about the match afterwards
So you’re telling me he competed with a broken hand and a sprained foot? I have to question when exactly this match took place because the commission reported his injuries and I doubt he’s supposed to make physical contact for a certain time. Really suspect, Just Saying.
It’s different with the gi, man. Whole other ballgame.
Dude, hurt is hurt
This doesn’t “mean” anything he was submitted in a grappling tournament it happens to the best, their are videos of Fedor in his prime getting submitted in sambo matches, but he was still undefeated in MMA.
Fedor was never submitted in Sambo. He got his first loss in like over 10 years or something like that by points.
In Sambo. This shit is just judo with half gi.
I’ve heard once that fedor wanted to go to ADCC, but the sheik doesn’t agree to change the name to M1ADCC…
Poor guy clearly has Alzheimer, he’s not all there anymore.
