MMA Fighter Kills One, Injures Another In Home Invasion Gone Wrong

From KFOXTV.com:

New details are released in the case of a northwest Las Cruces man who fought off four men to protect himself, his fiancée and their 2-year-old son.

According to deputies, two days ago, four men broke into a home on King James Road. It left one man dead, one man injured and landed two others in jail.

On Friday, KFOX 14 crews went to the house to speak with the victim, Joseph Torrez, but no one was home.

“Last night they had about four or five trucks over there just throwing stuff in. Just vacating the premises,” said neighbor David Cooper.

Neighbors said they’re still confused what happened.

“They were all nice and quiet and I don’t know what happened,” said Cooper.

KFOX 14 got a hold of the arrest affidavit. Deputies said it all started with an argument between Torrez and four other men. One of the men, Leonard Calvillo, called Torrez on the phone.

The arrest affidavit said, Calvillo threatened to go to Torrez’s home. The affidavit quoted Calvillo when talking to Torrez saying, “I will kill you and your family.”

Shortly after that threat, Torrez’s home was seen with a broken glass door and broken window.

Deputies said Calvillo along with Nathan Avalos, Sal Garces and Raymond Garces broke into the home.

They said Torrez’s fiancée tried to hold the four men back, but was unable to. The arrest affidavit reveals the men tossed furniture and then physically attacked Torrez.

“We heard the sirens and the lights and we looked outside and saw the cop cars,” said Cooper.

Deputies said Torrez was able to fight off all four men, protecting himself and his family. Neighbors said what alarmed them the most was a body bag lying in the street. “We were a little shocked about it because normally this neighborhood is really quiet,” said Cooper. Deputies said Sal Garces died from stab wounds. What appears to be blood stains can still be found on Torrez’s property. Avalos was taken to the hospital. Calvillo and Raymond Garces were arrested and face multiple charges including aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.

Awesome reporting here…..so, who is the MMA fighter involved?

    • Part Time MMA Fan says:

Joe Torrez. You probably haven’t heard of him b/c his pro record is 1-5. And not in the UFC.

      • Michael Bernard White says:

Now he’s 5-5 plus a fatality seems legit to me

      • GrimesGator says:

Ok but the article DID NOT say who was the MMA fighter—I didn’t know because like most people I couldn’t care less about the Fight game–I hope they ALL kill EACH OTHER

        • Michael Smith says:

If you don’t care about the MMA world then why are you posting on an MMA site? And I’d be willing to bet most people posting on this site actually do care about MMA. Thus why they go to an MMA website and post.

        • BobbyB says:

Dude that was just a really dumb fuckin comment. Now go kill yourself.

    • allmightysandman says:

really? “On Friday, KFOX 14 crews went to the house to speak with the victim, Joseph Torrez, but no one was home.” (directly from the article)

      • Bill123 says:

Headlines aren’t articles. The article mentions MMA nowhere.

It’s only nitpicking to the people who invented headlines and articles. Sort of like how Torrez’s kung fu fighting isn’t real boxing.

        • Michael Smith says:

How profound Bill. You are correct, Kung Fu isn’t boxing. But a Kung Fu master whoops a boxers ash every time because it’s a more complete art.

        • j98 says:

no, a boxer would murder a kung fu expert because boxing is a real life fighting system, kung fu is some BS art that doesnt apply to a real fight against someone who can punch you.

        • allmightysandman says:

LMAO…this is what you choose to add to the conversation? whether it was in the article or the headlines? All I am suggesting is that if someone doesn’t read this post/article and they question who it is, then they should read said post/article before wasting anyone’s time.

    Good for him.

      eat a di ck

    • M MaSayWhat says:

First of all, rocket science has nothing to do with deciphering a poorly written article. I think what people are saying jackass, is that the only way the reader can find out who is who is from the fucking title of the article. The article itself is a cluster fuck of details and makes no mention of who the MMA fighter was. It’s mentioned in the title, but nowhere else. Yes, I know….the victim is the one who injured and killed the intruders, but still. It does not excuse the lameness of this poorly written article.

And speaking of being stupid, next time come up with something more creative then the usual dumb ass “It’s not rocket science” cliché crap. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to studying for my degree in aerospace engineering so that when there is an article written by a 3rd grader about rocket science I’ll understand it.

  7. jay says:

Funny thing is this article has nothing to do with him being a mma practitioner. Its not like he used any known martial arts moves, but still thay put MMA fighter as the head line. Get over it world it is a legit sport and if more safe then football and boxing. Happy him and his family are safe.

    • Paul says:

Not safer than boxing. That’s certain.

      • Marcel McClease says:

        Safer than boxing. That’s certain.

      • chiefboy says:

much safer than boxing look at the research boxing uses 16oz gloves preventing early cuts and allowing more repetitive blows to the head and body and only blows to belly button up are allowed THE ENTIRE FIGHT 10-12 2:00MIN rounds MMA has wrestling BJJ boxing Muay Thai Karate TaeKwondo etc etc and if you are not intelligibly defending yourself referee can stop it boxing is only stopped 4 ways you dont answer the bell for next round throw the towel in 3-knock down rule or KO ….MMA much much safer than boxing…inform yourself

  9. Michael Edwards says:

And this government wants to disarm the America people when their are sick fools out there that prey on innocent people. If you are a intruder who inters my home with the intent to cause chaos, you are a dead man or woman! it don’t matter to me. You broke in, you signed your death warrant.

  10. XXxxMacleodxxXX says:

I have no clue what happened….good writing author…..

  11. David says:

Which is why I am always armed, even within my home. I have two kids, a wife, and my life to protect. I’m glad he was able to defend himself, his family and property. Well done sir.

  12. M MaSayWhat says:

Ok….so the victim is the MMA fighter? I’m confused. And did anyone think to find out why they were even talking on the phone prior to the attack? Obviously there’s a lot more going on for them to just be throwing stuff in a truck and vacating. Maybe someone still could be after him?

  13. Ricky Chambers says:

Delete article, try again. IDKWTF this is about. Well at least it’s not another “Silva’s leg is still broken” article, I guess. This is a pretty shoddy website overall, it needs serious improvement.

  14. Jonathan Coleman says:

If you break into my house then I will do anything and everything to protect my family, friends and myself. I applaud this man for what he did and I am so glad that his family and him are safe and that those responsible will face justice.

    F.U.B.A.R

  16. Booze03 says:

you’ve got the wrong guy!! LOL!!!

  17. paddlebearer says:

And those remaining 3 should be charged in Sal Garces death

  18. Graham Powell says:

He’s a 1-5 MMA fighter. So what! This article has nothing to do with MMA!

  19. Blaze says:

Good job! I also have loaded firearms in almost every room in my house, and three in my garage.

    • Paul says:

I think you just left a trace to your home. With a little bit of snooping someone can find out which house it is. Don’t be surprised if you get your home broken into.

  20. bubbagum says:

He is my hero, well done,…
