Metamoris 3 Breakdown: Royler Gracie vs Eddie Bravo
The main event of Metamoris 3 is a rematch of what is considered one of the biggest upsets in submission grappling history, Eddie Bravo and Royler Gracie (pictured). The two initially matched up in 2003, where the relatively unknown Bravo won via a late triangle choke over the highly touted Gracie. Eddie Bravo is a 3rd degree blackbelt under Jean Jacques Machado, whose biggest accomplishment is taking 4th place in the 2003 ADCC Submission Wrestling Championships. Since then he has been retired from competition, building up an empire of schools under his “10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu” moniker, where he has worked with thousands of students in an almost exclusively no-gi environment. Royler Gracie is a 7th degree black belt under the late Helio Gracie, and is one of the most decorated grapplers of his time, winning three ADCC championships along with multiple gold medals at Worlds and the Pan-American games as a black belt.
Eddie Bravo has a fairly unique grappling style, with a focus on several of his signature moves and positions, including his signature rubber guard, his “Lockdown” half-guard, and his “Twister” neck-crank. Eddie will primarily attack from bottom, looking for triangle chokes, arm-bars, and omoplatas from Rubber Guard, or will look for opportunities to transition to the Twister, which he can do from multiple positions, including from half-guard and side-mount. Royler is a fairly traditional jiu-jitsu player, who is strong from almost any position. He seems to prefer attacking from the top, where he has a very strong pressure-passing game. He is also known to look for foot attacks, including straight ankle-locks and heel-hooks.
Their first match consisted largely of Royler attempting to pass Bravo’s guard, with Bravo scrambling to avoid side-mount and recovering full guard, and during one of these transitions back to full guard, Bravo was able to lock in the match-winning triangle choke. Expect to see a lot of the same in the rematch. Royler will most likely take top position, and look to use his pressure to pass through Eddie’s guard and to establish positional control from side-mount and knee-ride. Bravo will be looking to once again hit a submission from guard, be it a triangle choke or an omoplata from Rubber Guard. One interesting stipulation of the match is that both men will be wearing gi pants, which the competitors will be allowed to grab. While this could certainly prove an advantage for Gracie’s footlocks, Bravo routinely wears gi-pants, and uses them to make his rubber-guard even tighter, so this could really work to either man’s advantage. Don’t be surprised to see either a closely-contested decision win for Royler, or a late submission win for Eddie.
