Metamoris 3 Breakdown: Dean Lister vs. Renato ‘Babalu; Sobral
Metamoris 3 features a grappling match that long-time MMA fans should take notice of.
Former UFC vets Dean Lister and Renato “Babalu” Sobral (pictured) will meet in one of the six matches featured in Saturday’s anticipated BJJ event in Los Angeles. The online live PPV stream starts at 4:00pm (Pacific time) exclusively at Metamoris.com. Metamoris 3 features six, 20-minute Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu matches with no judges, submission only.
Lister is a three-time ADCC champion, two-time Sambo champion and holds an MMA record of 12-7, with 10 wins coming by way of submission. He is best known for ferocious kneebars and heel hooks.
He is,a four-time U.S. Machado National Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion (weight class and open classes), and a National Gracie Jiu Jitsu champion.
Lister was a King of the Cage middleweight champion and defended his title several times before losing to Jeremy Horn in a light heavyweight fight. KOTC stripped Dean of his title after the loss, despite the fact the loss came at a different weight. Years later, Lister got revenge when he submitted Horn with a guillotine choke in the TUF 7 finale. Lister lost a three-round unanimous decision to Yushin Okami at UFC 92 on December 27, 2008, dropping his UFC record to 4–2. He then requested to be released from his UFC contract,
Babalu, also a longtime grappler and MMA star, has 16 of his 32 MMA wins by way of submission. He’s fought in damn near every MMA organization including the UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator and OneFC. He retired from the sport last year and has a renewed interest BJJ, competing in both the 2013 Master Jiu-Jitsu World Championships and the 2014 Pan Ams, where he placed third.
The 16-year veteran’s combat sports career took him anywhere and everywhere. Babalu touched gloves with a literal who’s who in the MMA world including Dan Henderson, Mauricio Rua, Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi and former UFC 205-pound champion Chuck Liddell on two separate occasions.
After getting let go by UFC in 2007 for his refusal to let go of an air-tight anaconda choke on David Heath at UFC 74, Sobral competed for Affliction, Strikeforce and ONE FC before eventually making his way to Bellator.
This match, maybe more than any other on Metamoris 3, appeals to longtime MMA fans. So which former fighter do you think pulls out the victory?
