Matt Serra Out as Chris Weidman Corner Man
Former UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra will not be able to fulfill his duties as cornerman for #1 contender, Chris Weidman (9-0), as he battles Anderson Silva (33-4) next month at UFC 162.
As reported by MMAFighting, Serra will stay in his native Long Island, New York for the fight due to health problems and the birth of his new child. In his place, Weidman’s father will take over corner duties to support his son as he vies for perhaps the most coveted belt in MMA, the middleweight crown.
His new revised corner staff includes Ray Longo, John Danaher, UFC light-heavyweight, Gian Villante, and now his father, Charlie Weidman.
Its doubtful that Weidman will be affected by this news as he has stated that mentally he is prepared for the chance to fight Silva. Still, if Weidman is a superstitious man, it could if nothing else change his mood come fight night.
Wiedman’s other cornerman, Ray Longo, stated that Weidman is still very focused and prepared to take on the greatest fighter on the planet:
“Knock on wood, everything’s great,” he said. “The guy is healthy. He’s looking good. We’ve brought in great sparring partners and he’s ready to go. I think the cards are aligning in the right spots.”
UFC 162 takes place on July 6th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
