Matt Lindland, Phil Davis, Mike Kyle and Daniel Cormier on This Week’s Episode of BJPenn.Com Radio
Three members of the American Kickboxing Academy will be joining Bryan Levick and Mitch Ciccarelli this week on BJPenn.Com Radio, but before they come on Matt Lindland will lead things off and discuss what heâs been up to lately.
Lindland is a former Olympic wrestler having represented the United States in 2000 in Greco-Roman Wrestling capturing the silver medal. The 42-year-old Oregon native is also one of the founding fathers of Team Quest. Two of his partners are UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and current UFC light heavyweight contender Dan Henderson. Lindland competed in MMA for 14 years with the UFC, Strikeforce, Affliction, IFL and BoDog organizations. He holds a career record of 22-9.
Our first AKA guest will be UFC light heavyweight Phil âMr. Wonderfulâ Davis. After defeating Wagner Prado via anaconda choke at UFC 153 in October, the UFC penciled him as a replacement for Chael Sonnen against Forrest Griffin at UFC 155. Unfortunately Griffin suffered a knee injury and Davis was taken off the card. Davis is 10-1-1 with his lone loss coming via decision to Rashad Evans at UFC on Fox 2 this past January. Davis and Prado fought at UFC on Fox 4, but an accidental eye poke from Davis caused the fight to be ruled a no-contest. Davis made an emphatic statement when the two met again in Brazil, but he will have to wait to feed off of that momentum now that Griffin is injured.
Up next will be Strikeforce light heavyweight Mike Kyle who will face Gegard Mousasi on January 12 in Oklahoma. A win over Mousasi will certainly help Kyle earn a spot in the UFC as this is rumored to be the final Strikeforce card. With a career record of 19-8-1(2) Kyle needs an impressive performance against the former Dream Middleweight Champion and Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion should he want a shot inside the Octagon. The last time Kyle competed he was defeated by Rafael Cavalcante via submission, but that loss was soon overturned to a no-contest when Cavalcante tested positive for steroids.
Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier will call in to discuss his upcoming bout with Dion Staring on the Strikeforce card scheduled for January 12th. After defeating Josh Barnett to capture the grand prix title, Cormier was supposed to face former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir in the first ever crossover bout on November 3rd, but Mir was injured and a suitable replacement was never found. This fight with Staring is seen nothing more as a tune-up bout before Cormier makes his UFC debut sometime in 2013.
Mitch and Bryan will also discuss this past weekendâs two UFC Ultimate Fighter Finale cards and talk to the AKA guys about their teammate Cain Velasquezâs upcoming rematch with Junior Dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title.
Listen on this Wednesday, December 19th beginning at 8pm EST/5pm PST/6PM MST
