Mark Hunt Receives His Visa; Set to Fight Dos Santos This Weekend at UFC 160

By Jake Chastain

After an odd sequence of events it seems that things for Mark Hunt and his scheduled appearance for UFC 160 next weekend against Junior Dos Santos are back on track.

We gained word about two weeks ago that Hunt, who stepped up to face Dos Santos after Alistair Overeem pulled out of the fight due to injury, was having trouble getting over to the States due to visa issues he was experiencing in New Zealand.

As the story continued to unfold we found out that the situation stemmed from an arrest that occurred way back in 2002. As soon as the issue arose the UFC was working on getting the situation handled as well as putting together a backup plan just in case Hunt couldn’t make it.

Earlier this week the UFC announced that Roy Nelson was standing by as a replacement to face Dos Santos if Hunt didn’t get his visa in time and then we gained word that Nelson was even cleared by the NSAC this past Friday to fight next week if need be. It seemed that Hunt, who is on a four fight winning streak and is one win away from a title shot, had just lost out on the biggest opportunity of his life.

Then, just when it seemed that Nelson/Dos Santos was the co-main on tap for next Saturday at UFC 160, Hunt broke word on his Twitter account that he has received his visa and is set to leave for the Las Vegas to take on JDS. Hunt wrote today (Sunday, May 19), “thank u for my visa father.”

Although arriving in Las Vegas on fight week isn’t the ideal situation Hunt was looking for he is happy to get things back on track and take his fight at UFC 160 with Junior Dos Santos. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani also tweeted that he confirmed with the UFC that Hunt has received clearance and is “likely” to fly out to Vegas this afternoon.

UFC 160 is set to take place this Saturday, May 25th in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be headlined by Cain Velasquez defending his UFC heavyweight crown against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
