Maia Criticizes Judges Following Decision Loss To Shields

“I don’t understand the judges. My strategy going into the fifth round was to defend the takedowns and score points standing, so I thought the fight was 3-2 to me. I think the judges should make their criteria more clear and the judges should go public. A decision like this can change a fighter’s life and these guys never show up. They need to show up. They need to know the responsibility they have with judging, and they should clarify the rules.”

Add Demian Maia to the growing list of fighters and MMA’s insiders who think the current state of judging in the sport is a joke!

Maia believes he won his fight against Jake Shields last night and calls for the judges to start showing up on fight night!

  1. JP Smith says:

Fighters are responsible for the dictation of their own fights. There are some really bad judges out there, but Maia didn’t bring his A game and Shields out worked him.

  2. Alan says:

It’s a little unfair to accuse Maia of being a boring fighter. He’s a proven finisher and a very exciting submission fighter, unless he meets someone with excellent submission defense, like Fitch or Shields.

Shields, on the other hand, deserves the blame. Every single one of his UFC fights has been terrible to watch.

  3. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

That was another horrible fight by Shields. And no it’s not because I don’t like grappling, I like a good grappling match when the fighters attack and try to submit their opponents. What I don’t like is when the grappling is all about stalling and ‘control’.A few prelims on the same night had a lot of grappling too, but those fights were far more exciting than this one.
