Yesterday during a UFC presser in New York, UFC CEO and chairman Lorenzo Fertitta discussed a wide range of topics. Amidst these topics was the UFC’s 2014 event schedule, which had an abundance of 54 total events in store for the promotion’s 21st year of action. Fertitta explains the company’s intent to expand the product that is the UFC’s Fight Night series. With The Ultimate Fighter at the bottom and the Pay-Per-View events at the top of the company’s product structure, the Fight Night series provides the middle tier; a tier that Fertitta plans to make much stronger with the increased event schedule.
“In the middle of the pyramid, we have our UFC Fight Night brand. It’s distinct in that it typically has two top contenders in the main event, usually in the top ten, so there is usually some meaning in the outcome relative to their journey towards the championship. The rest of the card is stacked with great fights between up and coming guys. We’re going to take that product and expand it into Europe and Asia next year. The first one in Asia will kick off on January 4 in Singapore; tickets just went on sale. The first one in Europe will be in March in London with Alexander Gustafsson and Jimi Manuwa.”
In addition to an increase in the amount of octagon action that we will see next year, the majority of said increase will be in free-view events on the Fox Sports channels. It appears as though the benefit of the company will be a mutual one, shared with the fans.
