KO Bonus Gives A Broke Tom Lawlor Stability In Time Of Need | UFC NEWS

By: Jason Kindschy

In a post-fight interview with MMAfighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, Tom Lawlor expressed his financial troubles going into his fight with Jason MacDonald at UFC on FUEL TV 3. After the night was over, Lawlor was very happy to earn a $40,000 fight bonus for “Knockout of the Night” honors. This victory follows a seven month lay-off for the “Filthy” New Englander, and the timing couldn’t have been better.

Lawlor stated, “I’ll be honest. I’m broke. I have no money. This money I got today, it’s going to be the first time I’ve deposited a check in over a year. A year and a half. This is like a big deal to me. I had to borrow money from friends and family just in order to go into this fight. I want to thank them, obviously. This means a lot to me mentally, it means a lot to my account.” Lawlor then went on to say, “I think I miscalculated the cost of living in the Northeast. I basically took all my money, bought a house and blew through all my money- just living costs, traveling, price of gas, multiple training locations.”

Being a fighter isn’t as easy as some of us may think. Other fighters have relied heavily on the outcome of their next fight to determine their fiscal future. One only needs to look to Pat Barry, who was facing eviction from his home prior to his fight with Antoni Hardonk at UFC 104. Barry mentioned eating rice with ketchup packets before the win, but was able to get everything square after.

With his recent money concerns behind him, Tom Lawlor looks to keep the gravy train rolling, and move back up the ranks in the UFC middleweight division.

He took the gamble to follow his dream. One might say that’s stupid, but right now he’s doing well and he’s making a living out of doing what he loves the most.

He could have been doing some shitty deskjob or something or maybe doing the same job as you’re doing right now. I can’t call the guy stupid for that.

When someone down on their luck makes good doing something he/she loves, something legal how can you refer to that person as being stupid? What would you’ve called it if he robbed your ass? Genius!!!!
