Jose Aldo Explains his Reluctance to Fight Pettis | UFC News

During his post-fight meeting with the media at UFC 157, Dana White revealed that featherweight champion José Aldo was unwilling to accept lightweight contender Anthony Pettis as his next opponent, on a bout that was already in the works for August this year. Following Dana’s harsh words, Aldo conceded an interview to TATAME in order to share his thoughts on the fight and explain his reluctance to put his belt on the line against “Showtime”.  Here’s what the champ had to say:

“Ricardo Lamas is the one who deserves this fight, since he beat Erik Koch, who was once the #1 contender. He earned that right after that victory. Cub Swanson is another name who’s on a upswing. They’re athletes of this division, who have been fighting for a long time for a chance at the belt, which never comes due to the fact that the UFC chooses fighters from the lightweight division.

Regarding the Pettis fight:

“There’s no done deal, nobody has signed anything. We’re waiting what’s best for us. I haven’t talked to Dedé (André Pederneiras, his coach and manager) so I don’t know what the situation is. It’s a great fight that everybody wants to see, but I have to talk to Dedé first.”

If he agrees with the UFC putting Edgar and now Pettis as his opponents, as if they are jumping the queue:

“No. The UFC created a ranking to avoid that, but, as of now, it is useless, because they are picking guys from other divisions. That’s only happening in my weight class, I don’t see it happening in other ones. Everybody talks about superfights, but they never happen in other divisions. We have to sit with the UFC to find a solution for this case. Why don’t they put Anderson Silva against whoever people have been waiting to see for all those years? I don’t know if there’s a reason for that, but it doesn’t matter. The one who wants to be a champion must not pick opponents or places. We have to be ready to fight at anytime and that’s what I do. If the UFC wants a superfight, that’s fine with me. I’ll fight anyone, but, for the belt, it’s gotta be against Lamas or Swanson.”

If he believes the fight versus Pettis shouldn’t be for the belt:

“It shouldn’t be for the belt. How does a guy get a titleshot if he’s never fought at my weight class? It’s unfair to the others. I’m not speaking just for myself, because I’m the champion and I will fight anyone, but it’s unfair to the other fighters who are training, winning their fights and thinking about getting the belt. Meanwhile, here comes a guy from another division, ask for a shot and the UFC agrees.”

  1. I've said it in the past says:

…the UFC will disrespect Jose Aldo until he doesn’t have the belt anymore. The UFC doesn’t want Aldo to have the belt because he is not a marketable fighter. They didn’t want Bendo to have the title either, so they gave Edgar a rematch after Bendo initially won the belt clearly!
I wouldn’t doubt they do the same to Barao in the near future.

    • bahaha says:

i was going to say alot of negative things about your post, but it was so profoundly stupid that ill just let you marinate in your own ignorance…

      • You're a dumb ass says:

That was the dumbest comment I’ve read in a long time. Aldo is scared to lose his belt and that’s all there is to it.

        • It is what it is... says:

I have to agree with you, it sounds like Aldo is scared to lose his belt; the proof is in the pudding, he said he would be more than happy to fight Pettis, but not for the belt.

At the same time I can see why he is frustrated. There is talk that the Silva versus GSP or Jones fight will be at a catch weight, so the belt won’t be on the line. Whereas with Aldo, his will…

        • i_luh_dat says:

Silva vs GSP or Silva vs Jones would be at a catch weight because Silva won’t drop to 170 and Jones wouldn’t drop to 185. Pettis actually is willing to drop down, just like Edgar was. That’s why Dana is making these “super fights” but he hasn’t made GSP vs Silva or Jones vs Silva.

        • The list of dummies are: says:

bahaha. You’re a dumb ass. It is what it is. It looks like Aldo took this stance to get a shot at the LW belt if he beats Pettis! Aldo ain’t scared of anyone, you jerkoffs. No fighter in the UFC is scared of anyone. They’re the ones stepping into the Octagon and facing a human being who wants to break their asses, you asses! When you do that, only then speak your mind. Until then, keep that C sucker under your nose shut.

      • 123 says:

You would make sense, if you were capable of making a point.

    • Cristian says:

Soo true! You hit the nail on the coffin with that comment. Sucks that it has come down to that.

  2. STANDALONEDIEALONE says:

I JUST WANT TO SEE A GOOD FIGHT HAPPEN, THIS IS DEFINATELY A PPV I WILL BE BUYING IF THIS FIGHT HAPPENS. I JUST HOPE ALDO DONT PULL OUT DO TO SOME TYPE OF INJURY, THATS WHAT IM CONCERNED ABOUT. THAT WOULD SUCK BIGGG TIMMME FOR US MMA JUNKIEZ LIKE MYSELF.

  3. YoMama says:

I agree with Aldo. Shafting the fighters in a certain division is pretty bad.

  4. The natural says:

Edgar’s not a marketable fighter either so that’s wrong Edgar got rematch because yes he gott beat up but Edgar won the rnds and granted everyone else the rematch and there weren’t any other contenders at the time. You just sound dumb saying bendo won belt clearly wen everyone knows edgar won rematch but lost credit by loosing to aldo But yes ur right they don’t like aldo at fw he’s not marketable but he should be now and he kinda got a point but he needs too fight whoever the UFC puts in front of him.

    • What? Edgar not marketable? says:

The UFC is in love with Edgar! That goes without saying…They would rather have Edgar over Bendo anyday. BJ outstruck Edgar the first time they met and Edgar won the belt. (go watch again) Bendo outstruck Edgar when Bendo initially WON THE BELT and Edgar gets a rematch. (Does that make sense to you?) Edgar outstruck Penn the second time around and also Bendo the second time around. Yes. But for the 2nd Bendo fight, Edgar lost because of the judges. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. Edgar was given the belt when he didn’t beat Penn THE FIRST TIME. Edgar wasn’t given the belt after the 2nd Bendo fight. Oh well. Life goes on. No one was more disappointed in Edgar’s second loss to Bendo than Dana White himself. In interviews, he looked like he lost his favorite pet dog talking after that fight! It was hilarious.
Point being, Edgar gets what he wants from the UFC. He just didn’t get what he wanted from the judges since Abu Dhabi.

  5. miaway queeglay says:

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ALDO ON THIS TOPIC. PETTIS SHOULD ATLEAST BE FIGHTING CUB SWANSON AND LAMAS BEFORE FIGHTING ALDO THAT WOULD ATLEAST BE 5 STRAIGHT WINS IN THE UFC.THE RESUME IS IMPRESSIVE OUTSIDE OF THE CLAY FIGHT HE BEAT JEREMY,COWBOY,JOE LAUZON,SOME VERY TOUGH DUDES IF HE BEAT CUB AND LAMAS I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.ALDO IS RIGHT THIS JUNK ONLY HAPPENS TO HIM MANNY,FLORIAN, EDGAR NOW THIS ITS BIGGER STRONGER GUYS AND HE OVER COMES EVERY TIME.ITS KIND OF SUSPECT. EVERYONE KNOWS DANA LOVES EDGAR AND BEGGED HIM TO COME TO FEATHER WEIGHT DIVISION, BECAUSE OF THE SIZE ADVANTAGE HIS OPPONENTS HAD AGAINST HIM.NOW DANA THROWING THE KITCHEN SINK AT ALDO WITH BIGGER DUDES FROM 155.IS IT A BRAZIL USA THING?HOW CAN YOU JUST TEXT DANA AND GET A TITLE SHOT?IF IT IS FOR THE FANS THAN IT SHOULDNT MATTER IF THE BELT IS ON THE LINE OR NOT I AM A HUGE FAN I DONT CARE IF BELT IS ON THE LINE I WOULD STILL WATCH IT.BESIDES DIDNT LAMAS CUT UP PETITES TRAINGING PARTNER ATLEAST FIGHT HIM 1ST.

  6. Scotty says:

When are people going to realize the UFC is a business and cares about what brings in more money first.. Dana and the UFC screw up so thy have to find a away to correct their mistake.. Edgar lost to Bendo but a controversial loss so he drops to FW ad says he wants a shot at Aldo but Koch was already signed to fight Aldo but soon as Koch go hurt, Edgar was in automatically.. We all know Dana wanted this from the start not Koch.. Now they want to unify the belts o they Gil the title shot and Pettis now has to is again.. So what does e UFC see do? Th gave him what e requests a shot at Aldo? Just so the UFC cleans up their mistake and make a lot of money cause they can market this fight.. Is the same why Hendrics got skipped over.. Reason why they were hoping Bisping bat Vitor so be could pass on weidman.. Reason why Chael is fighting Jones.. It’s BS and Aldo is calling the UFC out on it and he should.. He shouldn’t have to fight Pettis unless he asks to fight Pettis.. Not the other way round!

  7. Fufuflavor says:

Im almost certain most of us wants to see Aldo vs Pettis anyways so what’s all the complaining about?

  8. johnny potsmoker says:

Dude hes saying cub swanson??? that nigga got blasted by aldo in 7 seconds…hard to remember since it was so fast…who cares swanson won what? 3 in a row??? miller was at 7 wins in a row at one point and couldnt sniff a shot…thats just the way it is…what is with brazilian champions always trying to pick their fights…must not be well knowledge in that part of the world…i actually like aldo a lot, but when fighters do this its like for reals? youre a fighter bro so do your only job which is to fight…put the belt on the line…he scared to lose it?? bro pettis is raw as hell and although im not picking a winner we as fans will be in for a hell of a fight…two world class strikers that can finish fights and put fools lights out

  9. Sasquatch says:

Yeah ok Aldo I guess I’d be trying to promote the easier fight too… Lets face it, Pettis is a bigger draw then Lamas or Swanson and that’s what leaves me scratching my head.. one would think Aldo would be getting a bigger pay day through his PPV % so why is he refusing?… he’s scared that’s why!.. there’s no other explanation.

  10. Drew says:

I agree with everything but this… To ask your trainer what is best with u is kinda a cop out because financially and for your great legacy that you are building for yourself to put a name like Anthony show time Pettis on your list of defeated challengers would definitely put even more stock in the Aldo legacy. Again I agree with it not being fair but if the bosses say, hey Jose we want you and probably majority of the MMA community want u to fight Pettis for the title… Becuase he’s the champion it’s auto-accept in that situation just from pure principle

  11. ^ says:

was gunna roll in here and call aldo a dodging bitch, but he has some pretty dam valid points

  12. Harris170 says:

It truly sounds to me that aldo is scared to face Pettis. I guess Pettis doesn’t deserve it after being snubbed how many other times? If he’s a no.1 contender he’s a no.1. If Pettis can make the weight why not give him that fight? I mean come on Lamas or Swanson? They’re arent in the same league as Pettis or Aldo. Your a fighter and a champion act like one and fight whoever they put in front of you.

  13. Harris170 says:

And as far as this superfight crybaby shit he’s pulling. We didn’t see GSP crying when he had to fight a seemingly unstoppable Matt Hughes 3 times and 2 division champ and UFC Legend in BJ Penn. How many Legends/Hall of Famers have you fought Aldo?? I thought so, dry your eyes buddy dry your eyes

    • Dan Jenkins says:

Are you talking about the time he fought Matt Hughes at the tail end of his prime that wasn’t a super fight they were both welterweights or are you talking about when GSP fought BJ penn the second time and outweighed him by bout 20 pounds and still had to hold BJ against the cage to tire him like a punk or are you talking about the time he got out of the Anderson Silva fight by saying he can’t cut 7-8 pounds once he put it on and that he needed 50 million or something like that cos Anderson could hurt him that bad it cuts his career short. GSP isn’t the best example he’s ducked Anderson for the past 5 years or so and only super fight he’s had was BJ Penn and like I stated he made sure the odds were stacked in his favour

  14. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

He’s right about contenders getting screwed.

But Pettis had his fair share of getting screwed out of a titleshot too. Remember he was the reigning WEC champ and would have gotten an immediate titleshot if it wasn’t for Edgar and his rematches. So in a way I do think Pettis deserves the shot as of now.

I think Aldo should embrace the opportunity to fight another fan favorite. This will be a great fight.

  15. Dan Jenkins says:

I dont know how many of you understand that you need to fight in a division to be ranked in a division and you have to be ranked before even being considered a contender although this is definitely a fight I’m interested in. The end doesn’t justify the means in other words just because we want it doesn’t mean it’s the right thing. The ufc pulling this rubbish justifies all the negative things bob arum and the politicians say about the sport. The best way to describe it is chaos there is no order and just as Aldo say what’s the point of rankings if your not going to follow them. The rankings are just another “tool” for the ufc to justify their match ups that don’t make sense (and for Weidman to get his shot). Pettis has been guaranteed his shot at the lw title but wants the fw title have to wonder whether Pettis thinks he can’t beat Henderson and its not Pettis looking for the easier fight. As far as I know mma (ufc) is the ONLY combat sport awarding title shots to fighters that aren’t in the champions division. I read that Dana said that its up to Rousey if/when she fights cyborg and at what weight, how many fights and title defenses has she got and how many has Aldo and Anderson had and they don’t have that luxury. It’s good when you can make the rules up as you go aye

  16. Jason says:

Aldo…really comes off clueless with “That’s only happening in my weight class, I don’t see it happening in other ones.” Umm…LHW? Chael and Jon?

    • Scotty says:

He’s talking about bring in heavier divisions guy s down to fight him and he is correct its not happening in any other division.. Everyone has to move up.. Chael is coming up not down to fight Jones.

      • jason says:

Lol aldo was clearly sizably bigger then edgar he needs to suck it up if hes worried bout fighting someone “bigger” than him. We’re not talking that much of a difference here.

  17. jason says:

I must have missed the memo that clearly stated there was a regulated official process for picking people for title fights? Because unless im mistaken the ufc calls the shots and if they want someone to fight someone else its gonna happen if you dont like it go fight for another organization.

Do you really want to see Ricardo Lamas VS Aldo or Pettis Vs Aldo? Exactly. Who gives a shit about how they got there if its an entertaining match up lets get it on and enjoy the great fight (and from the ufcs point of view the money)

    • BringFitchBack says:

+ 1,000,000,000,000 to the nth degree. I really don’t see what all the hubbub is all about. Aldo can fight in any division he wants to!! Nobody is stopping him. If he wants to fight Jones let him bulk up and fight Jones at 05 or Silva at 85 or GSP at 70!! Am I missing something here or are people just over thinking this crap?

  18. T.DADDY says:

Aldo will beat the shit outta Pettis

  19. absolutepower says:

I want to see this fight so bad!! I like both fighters but I’m rooting for Pettis

  20. Ricky Fu says:

This is exactly what’s been on everyone’s mind for a long time already. Aldo finally calls Dana out. I’m a huge Dana White fan and always believed that he was all about keeping it real, but I’m actually believing he’s feeding off his own hype now. Should be interesting to see how Dana responses to this, cause it’s true in every way.

This is nothing about Aldo being scared or not, I’m actually pretty sure he’s confident to fight Pettis. He just believes that Pettis should fight his way up the rankings of featherweight, whether we know he will destroy all of them or not. It’s the right thing to do if the UFC is going to go ahead and promote this ” fair ranking system”. That’s just how it should be. A ranking system means you can’t just make random dream match ups from thin air just to make more money.

  21. What a mess says:

There’s only two people here that are making any sense and not just talking out of their ass. That’s Jenkins and Ricky fu. If you don’t agree with what thesw two people said then you are just a total idiot. You guys realize that some here actually know the sport and have some sense. Because me knowing this sport can say that a lot of the people here just sound plain dumb. Or retarded. So don’t just spit out nonsense saying he’s afraid or whatever. Whether he is or not. Only he knows. But the point he’s trying to make is that it’s just fair. Imagine if everyone’s started doing that. Here’s lyoto who earned his title. Not so impressive but it’s been waiting for it before the sonnen fight came up. So lets say jones beats sonnen. Then jds says I wanna fight jones. Based on the way Dana is setting up fights he would give jds the title. So what happens to lyoto. Wait another year ?? Just not fair for the person. Put yourselves in their shoes. Yeah you wouldn’t like it either. I love the ufc. But they are fuckin up. Dana got way too greedy. It’s not about the sport anymore. It’s Just becoming all business now.

    • Hahaahahahahahahaahahahahaahahahahahahaahahahahahaah says:

just saw that this guy is PRAISING HIMSELF because it’s all the same person!!!!!
      hahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahaha

  22. lol says:

“What a mess” You couldnt be more aptly named. Thats the most incoherent pile of drivel ive ever had the misfortune to read.

Congratulations, we are all collectively dumber for having read that.
