Jose Aldo Explains his Reluctance to Fight Pettis | UFC News

During his post-fight meeting with the media at UFC 157, Dana White revealed that featherweight champion José Aldo was unwilling to accept lightweight contender Anthony Pettis as his next opponent, on a bout that was already in the works for August this year. Following Dana’s harsh words, Aldo conceded an interview to TATAME in order to share his thoughts on the fight and explain his reluctance to put his belt on the line against “Showtime”.  Here’s what the champ had to say:

“Ricardo Lamas is the one who deserves this fight, since he beat Erik Koch, who was once the #1 contender. He earned that right after that victory. Cub Swanson is another name who’s on a upswing. They’re athletes of this division, who have been fighting for a long time for a chance at the belt, which never comes due to the fact that the UFC chooses fighters from the lightweight division.

Regarding the Pettis fight:

“There’s no done deal, nobody has signed anything. We’re waiting what’s best for us. I haven’t talked to Dedé (André Pederneiras, his coach and manager) so I don’t know what the situation is. It’s a great fight that everybody wants to see, but I have to talk to Dedé first.”

If he agrees with the UFC putting Edgar and now Pettis as his opponents, as if they are jumping the queue:

“No. The UFC created a ranking to avoid that, but, as of now, it is useless, because they are picking guys from other divisions. That’s only happening in my weight class, I don’t see it happening in other ones. Everybody talks about superfights, but they never happen in other divisions. We have to sit with the UFC to find a solution for this case. Why don’t they put Anderson Silva against whoever people have been waiting to see for all those years? I don’t know if there’s a reason for that, but it doesn’t matter. The one who wants to be a champion must not pick opponents or places. We have to be ready to fight at anytime and that’s what I do. If the UFC wants a superfight, that’s fine with me. I’ll fight anyone, but, for the belt, it’s gotta be against Lamas or Swanson.”

If he believes the fight versus Pettis shouldn’t be for the belt:

“It shouldn’t be for the belt. How does a guy get a titleshot if he’s never fought at my weight class? It’s unfair to the others. I’m not speaking just for myself, because I’m the champion and I will fight anyone, but it’s unfair to the other fighters who are training, winning their fights and thinking about getting the belt. Meanwhile, here comes a guy from another division, ask for a shot and the UFC agrees.”
