Jones No Longer Interested in Fight with Velasquez
At one point in time in the not so distant past, Jon Jones’ stranglehold on the UFC light heavyweight division was so firm he bandied the thought of possibly facing UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez.
Jones is leading up to his seventh title defense on Saturday when he faces Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC 172 in Baltimore. Jones now sees a 205-pound division with not only the likes of Teixeira, but Daniel Cormier, Phil Davis, and don’t forget Alexander Gustafsson, who pushed Jones to the brink in a 2013 bout.
“I have no interest in that at this point,” Jones said on Wednesday’s UFC 172 conference callof jumping to heavyweight to challenge Velasquez.. “There’s a lot of great competition for me to test myself against. Glover Teixeira obviously being first on that agenda. What a great challenge he will be. People are interested in rematches, I’ve got Phil Davis saying he’s going to crumble me like a cookie. Lots of competition for me and I’m ready to meet them all.”
