Jon Jones set to face Glover Teireira at UFC 171
After coming out victorious from his toughest test to date against Swedish Light Heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafson, UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Jon “Bones” Jones (19-1-0) is set to fight Brazilian Glover Teixeira (22-2-0) this March in Dallas at UFC 171.
Teixeira is undefeated in the UFC, winning all five of his matches under the Zuffa Banner, and has gone undefeated since 2005. Teixeira has some pretty notable victories under his belt such as his unanimous decision victory over former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson last January, and most recently his first round knockout of Ryan Bader in September.
This makes the third time the two have been scheduled to fight due to the booking being pushed back from its original spot at UFC 169 to UFC 170 and now to 171. Jones withdrew immediately from UFC 170 due to prolonged injuries.
Jones’ most notable achievement to date is his unanimous decision victory over Alexander Gustafson in September. Though he was urged to take on the rematch he refused and felt that it was Teixeira’s time to have his shot. Jones’ has been open to state that he feels that the Gustafson rematch is inevitable.
This will be the seventh title defense for Jones as he continues to rack up the record for most title defenses in UFC Light Heavyweight history. He is currently ranked the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He also has the longest running win streak in the Light Heavyweight division with a near perfect 13-1 record in the UFC. His only loss coming from a disqualification in 2009.
The two are set to face off at UFC 171 on March 15 in Dallas at The American Airline Center. Tickets are set to go on sale January 17.
