Jon Jones Will Soon Reach Anderson Silva Level Striking Says Coach | UFC NEWS

“Since he’s come to camp, I’m real blessed that this young man listens and he went from being mostly a wrestler to now he’s turning over to becoming a great striker in the division. He’s almost there, he’s almost to that Anderson Silva place where he is going to start getting those one punch and one kick knockouts. Just wait, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Coach Winklejohn, the striking coach behind many of MMA’s top stars, including Jon Jones, recently told that he believes the UFC’s light-heavyweight champion will reach striking greatness the likes of Anderson Silva.

  1. Mike says:

Takes years and years of repetition before you ever, if ever, get to a level like that. I personally don’t think he will EVER punch, kick or have the movement like silva. Silva was a Muay Thai fighter and boxer. Jones a wrestler. No comparison of the years dedicated.

  2. Aj says:

Jones has a potential of 15 GOOD years left in him still if not more, as much as I can’t say I like him you can’t deny by the time he’s 30-35 he will be one of if not the goat if he doesn’t fall off the rails.

10 years of practising something whilst already at his level will prove to be something amazing.

    • T.DADDY says:

The only way he will stay on top is he will have to stay at 205.. cuz if he moves up he will get rag dolled … He will never be the goat cuz he will only fight in one division… Silva already is the goat and he’s still fightin…

      • You say the dumbest crap, you idiot says:

you say sh** as if Jones would take a HW fight without training and preparing. Shows the hatred you have for Jones is so deep-rooted that it bothers you to no end! too bad.

All those who have doubted Jones’ ability are hurting with hate inside. They’ve been wrong every single time. They hold on to glimpses of hope (Machida first round, Belfort arm bar) but continue to be wrong. So stupid and so sad. If you respect, you won’t hurt so much.

        • GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

Jones will only be able to make Lhw for a few more years then he will be fighting guys alot cloer to his own size and reach and he will get caught. No way Jones would beat JDS or Cain, or Cormier, even Overeem would probably knee him into submission. At somepoint Jones would have to engage and Overeem has a 80″ reach so I would count him out against Jones. Maybe even struve could get ahold of Jones’ arm like Vitor did and have the range motion to snap it off. No doubt in my mind Vitor ripped some ligamnats and tendons in Jones arm and he is just downplaying it because he knows he don’t have to fight fo at least 6-8 more months

  3. mean170 says:

Jones has pillow punches/kicks. Silva/Jones at a 195 catchweight. If Jones can make weight he’ll get dropped and tko’d by round 2. Standing with Anderson is a surefire way to get dropped and pounded out.

    • Anderson>Jones says:

Exactly. Technique does not give you punching power. It can improve things for sure, but you don’t go from not being able to bust a grape to having H bomb or Vitor power. Some people just don’t have punching power, that’s how it is. Jones has never, never demonstrated even a little bit of KO power, and he’s hit people plently. His elbows have power but that’s different. Same with kicks, everybody has KO power in kicks. Anderson doesn’t have one punch power either but he has a lot more power than Jones

  4. What says:

LOL, yeah Silva 10-15 years ago maybe! You don’t attain skill like that in a single training camp. Complete crazy talk!

  5. Xaninho says:

Hahaha he has 13 years left to reach that level, but he never will. The thing is, striking like that can’t be taught. It comes natural for Silva. Same thing with Tyrone Spong, he’s a naturally gifted striker who reached a very high level at a young age. Jones’striking is ok, but not great at the age of 24.

Jones will always be a wrestler who learned to strike.

  6. maurice says:

he said “anderson silva place” in terms of dropping ppl with kicks and punches. he didnt say jones was about to be just as techhical sound as anderson silva. jesus u jones haters jump at any chance to hate. calm down ppl.

  7. T.DADDY says:

He never KO’d anybody… Tko yeah but he never cleanly KO’d somebody

  8. Joe says:

Hasn’t got the chin of Anderson Silva. The guy will never be at the level of Anderson because of his chin.

  9. hawaiian muay thai says:

    no he won’t!

  10. baby bee says:

lulz was had when I read the title. Johnny Boy is sloppy…all he has is reach.

  11. The Truth says:

That statement IS the the dumbest thing I have ever read. How could you be a reputable striking coach and say that. ROFLMFAO

  12. Mick says:

Quick list of wrestler that developed one hit knockout power Dan Henderson chuck Liddell josh koscheck Johnny Hendricks… Don’t see why he can’t develop it to…he’s a freak

  13. Dave says:

Winklejohn is actually a bigger idiot than I thought. Jones’ striking is average at best. His advantage is his size. He’s a HW who’s scared to fight other HW’s. His reach advantage and enormous fight night weight advantage are what give him his edge.

    • So, Dave, You moron says:

you’re such a mental case. please remember your moronic words when Jones goes to HW (no doubt, within 10 years, he will move divisions)and begins beating HWs also. He may lose 1 (maybe), but you think Jones won’t improve his stand up, learn bjj, improve wrestling, improve his knowledge of fighting????? You’re dumb. You’re retarded.

      Have a nice day:)

      • And you called Dave a moron? says:

For you to say Jones will lose 1 fight maybe, one of those way out there statements. Anybody can lose. Jones is the most susceptible because of his inexperience gap. At HW he will be average size maybe that doesn’t affect things much but even Anderson silva has 3 legit losses and GSP 2 legit losses. Those are the guys that have proven themselves to be the best the sport has ever seen. But Jon Jones yeah he will only lose 1 time legitimately, and even that’s a maybe. I don’t know what jones dick smells like, but if I had to guess I’d say your breath.

  14. Ninja87 says:

For those who don’t know, Jon Jones actually wanted to have a fight at HW but, Dana White didn’t want him to. I do believe, Anderson Silva is the GOAT in the UFC but, Jon Jones has fought tougher competition and bigger names in a shorter amount of time. He’s only been training for 5 yrs and he’s still young. I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see

    • ballsackface says:

no, hes fought hasbeens as the devision is saturated by old journeymen that were champs in their prime 5-10 years ago (with the exception of a quick change of hands)
what took JBJ 2.5 rounds took AS half a round with vitor
      so yeah, whatever

      • Ninja87 says:

MMA math is pointless. With that said Jones tko’d Shogun (1st time Shogun’s ever been tko’d btw) then Shogun went on to KO Griffin in the 1st round, had fight of the night with Hendo, n tko’d Vera in the 4th. After Jones choked Machida out he went to KO the bigger n stronger Bader like nothing, and we all know Evans is a beast, in Vitor’s last 9 fights he only loss to Silva n Jones. Anderson is the GOAT but u can’t compare the resumes of his opponents to Jones’ opponents. Sorry but it’s the truth

    • MooreUSMC says:

Brock lesnar was training for a shorter period of time before he was champ he had 1 fluke loss. He was determined to be next to unbeatable, now he is the best draw in the WWE. You can’t say because Jones has only trained for such and such time he will be the best ever. Only his time in the UFC can answer that question. And as far as that goes, GSP has beaten more skilled fighters than jones has. Fitch Kos Hughes shields penn sherk are better than Rampage Shogun Bonnar Belfort.

  15. nate stone says:

Baroni would beat both at the same time.he is the best fighter ever.

  16. 11thhour says:

the only strike jones will ever be able to finish anyone with is a body kick, he’s too busy suckin’ on greg jacksons titty learning to be a flange instead of training to become an actual weapon.. If he ever beat Anderson it would just be from being a boring foul lay n’ prayer, he could never win standing… ever.

  17. aaxantonio says:

im pretty sure anderson started doing mauy thai when he was 16 so silva has what, a little better than 20 years of practice? and jones is 25 yo? winky realy thinks that much of himself as a coach? noone is even close to anderson as a striker.

  18. Sack says:

get off that brazillian sack you gayboys, he’s the best p4p ever so what Jones is a good striker and will prove to be great. He’s hardly sloppy like people say, if he was sloppy he’d get smashed like the other fellas with his build

    • Xaninho says:

You’re the one talking about other mens sacks…And there is No other man with his build dummy. That’s just the point everyone with some intelligence and sense is trying to clear up. He has the longest reach in the UFC, Jones is a mutant, even Struve doesn’t have the same reach as Jones has.

So in short: YES he has sloppy technique, but he knows how to use/mask it using his insane reach and size advantage.

  19. Jason says:

LMFAO!!!! This guy cannot be serious!?

  20. alen says:

how can you even compare Jones to Silva it’s like comparing Bruce lee to chuck Norris and we all know Chuck was the king but Bruce was god 😀

  21. Jeremy says:

He will never be @ the level of Anderson Silva in striking!! Anderson is the best striker ever in MMA. His level of striking is not something that is taught, it’s something your born with. Say he’s going to be a great striker, and he coming along really well. But don’t say that. Ridiculous comment!! Jones striking NOWHERE near Anderson’s. The man has Never Had a knockout in his career!! c’mon!!

  22. Josh says:

When’s the last time you saw a wrestler drop someone the caliber of Vitor with a front leg side kick to the body??? I dislike him as much as the next person but look what he has done to previous opponents

  23. DMAC says:

All the haters with “he’ll never be” comments are plain out dumb kids. You got fools in here that “can’t stand” bones but you post 5x in every article that references Jones. I guess he’s right when he said haters are really fans, they take the time out their day to argue with people about him. Freakin dump trucks!!

To say someone can never do something especially someone this talented who’s accomplished what he has over a short period of time goes to show your lack of knowledge in MMA or sports in general for that matter.

  24. Jeremy says:

@ DMAC…There are great strikers in the UFC in every weight class. Great strikers that are both technically sound and have power.( more than Jones by far) None of them have the level of striking that Anderson does. He’s the the best of the best in that department. No fighter that at probably any weight class in MMA has a chance to beat Anderson in a stand up striking match period. Anderson’s striking is great because of god given talent that he was blessed with not because his striking can be taught by a coach. even “Greg Jackson” otherwise you would see performances like his from other guys, which you don’t. Like i said before say that Jones will be a good or great striker in the future. (because he’s not surely not now.) But don’t compare his striking to Anderson’s, thats just crazy, biased, and uneducated. Jones is a talented fighter and has accomplished a lot in a short period of time even if it’s been @ the wrong weight class. But the topic of conversation is Striking, and comparing it to Anderson Silva’s striking. So it’s not that were haters on Jones it’s just that “we” actually know about the sport. And know crazy when we read it!!

    • DMAC says:

Jones in the wrong weight class yet you know the sport?… Haha haters act like Anderson possessed this “amazing striking” his entire career, but you know the sport? Anderson didn’t start putting on these masterful performance till later in his career. If you know anything about athletes you would know that with dedication, drilling, studying etc you can turn a corner in performance and do amazing things you would’ve never though you can do. But if you don’t have experience being a athlete or being around high level athletes than I don’t blame you for thinking the way you do.

  25. Mark says:

It’s funny how people say Jones can develop his striking into Anderson’s level because “Anderson’s hasn’t always been this good”. Their careers do not parallel at all. Not at ALL. Also, Anderson strikes without the threat of a takedown while Jones does. Jones is an excellent fighter but his striking will never be on Anderson’s level.

  26. Jeremy says:

Yeah DMAC in case you didn’t know, there’s a HW division in the UFC. Hard to believe right!?.. And thats where i believe Jones belongs thats why i made that comment that he fights out of his weight class, c’mon. You learn something everyday don’t you!! but that’s besides the point. Again your point doesn’t make any sense. Anderson has been doing it for a very long time, and ever since he stepped foot inside the octagon he’s been the absolute best in that department. And Oh, and the Octagon.. Thats the eight sided caged fence that all UFC fighters fight in! And your absolutely right with hard work and dedication you can do amazing things. Just not Anderson Silva amazing things. All UFC fighters are professionals and work hard everyday at there craft, yet there striking is nowhere near Anderson Silva’s. So that point is invalid and just sounds silly. 90 percent of people here agree with what i’m saying are for some reason you think your right. Funny! Your calling people fools, dumb kids and all this crap, thats the first sign that your really the kid, the fool, and the one with lack of knowledge in MMA, and in general for that matter. Take a Seat! please!!
