Jon Jones Says Move to Heavyweight is Likely for Late 2013

While participating in an on-line chat courtesy of Metro PCS on Tuesday night, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones told fans that he believes he will begin competing in the heavyweight division sometime at the end of 2013.

The 25-year-old Jones has dominated the 205lb. division due to unbelievable athleticism, fantastic wrestling, unorthodox striking and an 84.5″ reach that he uses to perfection. Jones says he walks around at 225lbs., and that cutting the 20lbs. to make it to the light heavyweight limit is not a difficult task right now.

As Bones gets older the weight cut will become harder, but another issue is finding suitable opponents for him to defend his light heavyweight title against. He will face Chael Sonnen in April after the two coach opposite one another on the upcoming season of TUF, but Sonnen hasn’t fought at 205 since October of 2005.

Jones has defeated five former UFC champions in a row and the only fighter out there who people feel can give him a run at 205 is Alexander Gustafsson who will face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC on Fox 5 in December.

Daniel Cormier has been mentioned as a possible challenger, but until he makes the decision to fight in the light heavyweight division, Jones will probably face recycled opponents until he does make the move to heavyweight.

Fights with current heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, former champion Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem are just a few of the intriguing possibilities that wait for him in the heavyweight division.

This is good news but now i truly believe that Jones vs Silva will never happen

  2. Xaninho's daddy says:

Jon Jones vs Stephan Struve!! I wanna see Jon Jones fight someone taller than him for a change

    • trololol says:

struve’s a bad match up for jbj. struve has awesome standup but doesnt use his reach as well as jones but struve’s pretty decent off his back as well struve bjj would even out jbj wrestling.

      • dogfart says:

struve is slow and clumsy as fuck
he only stays in as he has an impossible chin and likes the taste of his own blood
i love his fights, blood everywhere. absolute wars

  3. Black Jesus says:

Gotta go heavy weight so Silva can’t whoop him!!! Run JBJ Run!!!

    • Moron says:

this comment is stupid, Both Jones and Silva have said they wont fight each other, yet Dana is still convinced it will. But Jones isnt in anyway running from Silva, he’s only doing what is best for the business, and himself. Imagine watching Jones fight the same guys over and over. It would get far too boring, so he’s just trying to stay fresh, and keep the fans, and his bosses happy.

  4. Brah what says:

225 more like 240 and he cuts about 35lbs.good news though.can’t be p4p if you stay in one class.glad to see the champ acting like one.

    • Iceman says:

Don’t start sucking his di*k just yet.Mark my words bones will never move up to heavyweight. He knows he will get demolished. He lacks power and strength,he won’t make it in that weight class.

  5. 123 says:

i think he will dominate at heavyweight, cant wait.

  6. you guys are idiots says:

He might get a couple of wins at hw but he sure as hell wont dominate the division. Jds, overeem and velasquez will wreck his ass.

    • Iceman says:

I agree, those guys will wreck bones.frank Mir,werdum, even Roy would beat em….I don’t know if they will wreck him but those guys could beat him.Reem,JDS,and Cain will wreck him tho.

  7. brett says:

I think he can beat anyone other than JDS and Cain

  8. Shadleigh says:

Heavyweight division is an entire different story. Jones reach advantage won’t be as significant. He won’t be able to man handle opponents in the HW division like he does at LHW. The guys hit harder in the HW division. All those variables add up and I think there are more fighters than JDS and Cain that could beat him. Jones will still be a top 5 HW. He has the potential to be HW champion, but I think he will suffer a defeat or two at HW before that happens.

  9. DMAC says:

Jones will reck shop @ HW!!

  10. Broman says:

Jones loses to JDS, Cain, Overeem, Mir, Big Nog, Bigfoot, Werdum and DC. They all hit way harder and most of them can outdo him on the ground as well.

  11. Not You says:

While I do think Gus is a great fighter, he won’t even come close to beating Jones. Jones hold too many skills in his arsenal over Gus. Better striking, ground game, good movement. It will be another W for Jones. And if Jones puts on size and strength the right way, he WILL be able to manhandle people at HW, he will just have to hone his technique in a little more. People are acting like he won’t gain strength moving up, which is ridiculous.

DONT YOU REMEMBER THE POST ON BJPENN.COM WITH THE COACH OF JON JONES SAYING THAT HE WAS REALLY REALLY CLOSE TO ACHIEVE THAT ONE HIT KNOCK OUT POWER IN HIS STRIKING ?? with his knees elbows punches n kicks?? i do lol and if hes improving that much hell be a machine by the end of 2013 but there are surely big challenges up there who knows wut would happen lol

  13. Xaninho says:

His reach will still be the longest of the division. Those mutant freak limbs of him are longer than Struve’s.

  14. Josiah says:

good, coz jones has nothing left to prove in LHW and so is silva in MW.

  15. Thom says:

Remember what Overeem used to look like? Yeah, Bones could bulk up and be a big heavyweight.
