Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia set for UFC 156 in Las Vegas | UFC News

UFC officials announced today that a key welterweight match-up between Jon Fitch (24-4-1 MMA, 14-2-1 UFC) and Demian Maia (17-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) has been added to the UFC 156 event set for February 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maia, who is 2-0 since dropping down to welterweight, most recently disposed of Rick Story at this past month’s UFC 153 event. Prior to his submission win over Story, Maia had earned a bizarre TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim in his welterweight debut at UFC 148.

The BJJ specialist, Maia, went 9-4 while in the UFC’s middleweight division. He even fought for the title at UFC 112, where he suffered a decision loss to middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.

Meanwhile, Jon Fitch also fought at the UFC 153 event in Brazil, where he earned a hard-fought decision win over rising star Erick Silva in a bout that was deemed UFC 153’s “Fight of the Night.”

The victory at UFC 153 snapped a 2 fight winless streak for Fitch, as he had previously suffered a brutal knockout loss to Johny Hendricks and settled for a draw against B.J. Penn.

UFC 156 takes place February 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is headlined by a featherweight title fight between current champ Jose Aldo and former lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar.

    • SinCe 2004 says:

Dude, you clearly dont know wtf ur talkin bout. This is the PERFECT match up, well done Joe Silva.
Fitch is boring when he is fighting strikers, but a submission ACE like Maia who has proven to be a powerful force at WW,,, cant wait for this one.

  2. uhnomuhlee says:

Maia will be making quick work of Fitch’s amazing submission defense.

  3. Xaninho says:

It looks like this wil be a groundfight, but it wouldn’t be the first time that two grapplers have too much respect for eachothers groundgame and rather stand and bang.

If it goes to the ground I just hope Fitch won’t fall back into his boring old style of Lay n Pray and keep up the improved going for finishes style.

In the end I think Maia has the best chance to win this though.

  4. GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

I was hoping the UFC would match Fitch up against Ellenberger, so we all could a repeat of Ellenberger/Sheilds. I also would like to see Fitch against Sihar or Kim. Looks like UFC is going to give Fitch a break from strikers. I think Fitch’s days will numbered after he eventually has to fight Rory Roider, Ellenberger, Sihar. I even think Aaron Simpson would catch Fitch with a big right hand afer Fitch failed to take him down.

    • Not You says:

None of those fighters have a gas tank to keep up with Fitch. Especially since some of them would be slated for 5 rounds.

    • Keep Fitch (Forever) says:

His last fight was against an amazing striker u faggot moron. How is he getting a break? Johnny hendricks win was a fluke anyways and the ref jumped 2 early. I hope Fitch lays and prays and steals a decison win from all your favorite fighters. Fuck you, you **** suckin piece of shit.

  5. Dick Diaz says:

I think this might turn out to be a sloppy slugfest mixed in with some wrestling and ground fight. Sound be a good, but not great, scrap…

  6. MONEY FLOYD says:

BJPENN.COM knows fukk all, Demian Maia is 11-4 in UFC. Maia will tear Fitch Appart. His lay and pray wont work when he’s getting submitted, just ask Uncle CHAE
    L.

  7. B-rad says:

This has got to be every wrestlers worse nightmare, someone with the jitz skill like Maia… A triangle choke is in the forecast for that evening

  8. Bringbackbabalu says:

@money Floyd you idiot it says he went 9-4 at mw and 2-0 in ww which if you not a total moron in OMG!!! 11-4 don’t come on a site and bag it out you dumb ass when you clearly can’t read a whole article. On the fight I see a very nice triangle choke defeat in fitchs future

  9. KIDD433 says:

Hopefully Maia breaks something of Fitch so bad that retires his boring gay ass
