Jon Fitch Released By UFC Following Recent Maia Loss | UFC NEWS
In one of the more surprising moves in recent UFC history, Jon Fitch, one of the top Welterweights in the world, was among 16 fighters released today.
Fitch, 24-5-1, was a top UFC title contender in the Welterweight division for years. At one point in his career he had a 16 fight win streak. The winning streak led to him facing George St. Pierre at UFC 87 for the Welterweight championship. He lost the fight, but would continue to dominate the rest of the division by winning his next five fights.
At UFC 127 he fought BJ Penn to a draw, and followed that up with a KO loss to Johny Hendricks. He bounced back with a thrilling three round Unanimous Decision victory over Erik Silva. He could not continue the success as he lost his most recent fight to Demian Maia at UFC 156 by Unanimous Decision.
The release was confirmed by UFC Dana White, but no reason for the release was given. With UFC 157 coming up this weekend rest assured that it will come out why the UFC would release a top tier fighter like Fitch at one of the upcoming pressers.

LOng overdue but its a great day for the UFC and fans. The most boring excuse for a fighter to ever set foot in the octagon is finally down the f’n road. Yep I predicted Fitch would be gone by end of 2012 i guess i was wrong by a few months. I think i will celebrate for 6 months.

This is surprising, but not unbelievable. I was never a big fan, although the win over Silva appeared to give life to his boring career. I thought it was funny that Maia did exactly to Fitch what he has done to basically everyone he has ever fought. The fight was insanely boring though.
Not a Fitch fan but that’s bullshit! He’s still top 10 in the world like him or not…..smh

Thank you Steve and yes sir it is a wonderful day in MMA world and UFC deserves our support for finally getting rid of the scurge of MMA. Fitch has run more people off from this sport than anyone else ever. I know guys that use to pitch on UFC PPV’s back in early 90′s that flat refuse to watch MMA now because of Jon Fitch. Lay n pray has caused more damage to MMA fanbase than most people can begin to comprehend. The uFC has been wanting to get unified rules changed to bring back yellow cards just because of Jon Fitch. UFC use to stand for Ultimate fighting championships and to alot of people it was becoming Ultimate Lay n pray” championships. So bigtime prope to UFC and Joe Silva , Dana and UFC Brass. Joe Rogan is probably threatening to quit he was in love with Jon Fitch. I think they were ( F A ” s) to be honest. Fitch has noone to blame but himself for things like telling Daan white on National T.V at post fight conference when Dana said time for Fitch and Koscheck to fight since theya re ranked back to back and Fitch says “good luck with that” Yep either him or kosckeck should have moved up because they were causing an unfair advantage when tehy were both top 10 and refsuing to fight each other. They took turns taking out prospects instead of decisding whihc one them should move up and they should have fought. Fitch started his career at LHW and had like8 fights at MW and was dropping over 30 lbs to make weight. Fitch used his considerable size advantage to layn pray where as Koscheck at least came to fight. Fitch own bad attitude on Twitter towards UFC didn’t help him keep his job either. He once said Dana and UFC was “dumming up” MMA. Sorry Fitch you made your own bed now sleep in it( probably by himself pretty quick) No way Fitch;s old lady is going to stick around now theya lready were busted finacially. Maybe Fitch could go out to salt flats and wear a cape and use those GINORMOUS ears to help him earn how to fly. Fitch’s fighting nickname should have been “wingnut” with those world record size ears. My god those belong in the circus side show. Only person I have ever seen almost as ugly as Fitch is Abe Lincoln almost like Twins and theym were from the same area( same kin folk) I hope Fitch rotts in MMA obscurity where he belongs for stealing all those hours of our lives while we painfully watched his layn pray. No wonder Fitch holds the all time Collge D 1 record for being penalized the most points in wrestling history for stalling. You see Fitch was a worls class staller long before MMA whn he went 38-68 in 5 years at Purdue. Johny hendricks and Askren won more matches and had more pins in one season than Fitch had in 5 seasons. I swore if Goldie and Rogan called Fitch a “world class wrestler” one more time they needed to d” real bad. But again those clowns say Bisping has world class K-1 kickboxing LOL. It was the last fight on his contract. Fitch did have a nice fight against Erick Silva to show the UFC he could have exciting fights going for finishes, but DW probably anticipated on Fitch returning to his old boring LnP tactics once he signed a new contract.
Smart move by DW.
i dont care for fitch but if your gunna get rid of him then you should get rid of Edgar (lost 3 straight) Garcia (he just ****ing sucks) Melvin (lost 2 back to back)Palhares (lost 2 back to back) i think you get my point
Are you dumb? Edgar’s last 3 losses, 2 of them were fight of the night. Garcia is one of the most entertaining fighters as is Melvin Guillard. It was right to cut Fitch, he is totally boring and no one wants to watch him fight! The only Fitch fight I liked was the last one, the hendricks fight and the GSP fight where he was getting handled. Now he can go to Bellator and “fitch” everyone there
GSP beat the holy hell out of fitch, 2 judges scored 2 rounds 10-8, 50-43 on 2 cards. Fitch took one of the worst beating in MMA hsitory that night and he still cried constantly that he desrved a rematch. Fitch will always be remembered as yhe most boring fighter ever to set foot in MMA and he will always be remebered as the fighter that almost ruined MMA with layn pray
Dana would get rid of Cain and Sonnen before he would ever get rid of Frankie. Frankie has a contract where he can get any title shot at any time any division or any fight with anyone period. NOONE in MMA has more pull than Frankie Edgar. Frankie Edgar next to Dana has more power than anyone on all MMA. Dana loves Frankie more than hia own children. Frankie could pull up to Dana’s house and walk up to door and throw Dana’s kids and wife out on street and move in. In Dana’s mind Frankie is best p4p fighter on planet. All that running away has dana hypomotized.

Fitch isn’t in the same stratusphere in wrestling world as askren. How ironic Fitch gets “Fitched” and then fired. I don’t necessarily agree with him getting released because he is a top ten but I do agree with the message the UFC brass are sending out to the rest of the lay n’prayer.
Surprising yet understandable at the same time. I guarantee this is gonna light a major fire under Fitch’s ass. Its gonna be the same deal with what happen to Gonzaga, he’ll fight somewhere else for a while do really good and then the UFC will be like **** were idiots.

jon fitch was actually a good fighter to watch in my opinion, i dont understand why dana white has cut jon fitch, terry etim & che mills.. all fighters i want to see fight, why didnt rampage jackson or dan hardy get cut when they lost like 3 in a row
