Jim Miller On Previous Weigh-Cuts: “I’m positive I took years off my life”

Jim Miller recently sat down with Bloodyelbow.com, where he walked us through his pre-fight routine. More specifically, his weight-cutting routine. And while he seems to have it down to a science now, with a bit of cardio and an immersion bath (also known as a contrast bath)… things weren’t always this way.

Jim used to cut weight the “old-fashioned” way – starvation, dehydration, cardio, saunas, treadmills and plastic from neck to ankle. But from those mistakes, he’s learned how to do this sometimes-very-unsafe preparation as safely as humanly possible. And while no weight cut is a “good” weight cut, he’s managed to make it as comfortable as he can, as he prepares to step into the Octagon.

I’m a firm believer that pain is a good learning tool.” Miller said. “I’ve made all the mistakes you can make when it comes to cutting weight. Wrestling in high school it was don’t eat, and bust your ass right before weigh-ins. Wrestling in college it was workout for two days straight, not eat, not drinking to make weight two days in a row to just suffer for four out of the seven days of the week. I’m positive I took years off my life wrestling in college. Now, I’ve got time and you’re only making weight a couple times a year.”
