A newly announced middleweight matchup has clear title implications, and it’s heading to UFC Fight Night 36.
Former Strikeforce champ and all-around scary dude, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will collide with Francis Carmont in the co-headliner of the event, which will take place February 15th, out of Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. Promotion officials announced the bout today.
The card will be headlined by another critical matchup in the division, as Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi collide in a highly anticipated match-up. The event’s main card will air live on FOX Sports 1 (not Fox Sports 2, as originally planned).
Souza will be returning to the octagon after an incredibly impressive performance at September’s UFC Fight Night 32, where he earned a first-round knockout against onetime middleweight challenger, Yushin Okami.
Francis Carmont (who is a training partner of welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre) is currently riding a 6-fight UFC win streak, his most recent win coming by way of unanimous decision against Costa Phillippou.
The winner of this showdown will be positioned to make a possible run at the championship, sometime in the coming year.
