Hyun Gyu Lim Replaces An Injured Jake Ellenberger, Meets Tarec Saffiedine At UFC Fight Night 34
The UFC is going on its maiden voyage to Southeast Asia this January, but they will be taking that voyage without the recently injured Jake Ellenberger. Instead, Hyun Gyu Lim will step in to take on Ellenberger’s planned opponent (and the last man to wear the Strikeforce welterweight strap), Tarec Saffiedine.
Lim will be trying to extend his UFC unbeaten streak to three, and his overall winning streak to eight. Saffiedine, on the other hand, will be happy just to be back in the cage again,
as it’s been almost a full year since he last fought. That last fight saw him pick up a win – and a belt – from the always dangerous Nate Marquardt, in what was to be the companies final welterweight championship fight. After that career high, he quickly found himself facing a few career lows, as various injuries have kept him from competing since that bout, this past January.
Saffiedine will have to quickly shake off any ring rust that may exist, otherwise he might find it being forcibly removed; Lim has proven to be a stiff test in the division,
racking up two consecutive knockouts in his first two fights for the company.
There’s no word yet on any timetable for Ellenburger’s return. Lim’s original opponent on the card, Kiichi Kunimoto, awaits a new opponent to be named by the UFC brass.
UFC Fight Night 34 takes place Jan. 4 at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
