GSP Wants The Silva Fight, But Only On His Terms When The Time Is Right | UFC NEWS

“This fight is the cherry on the sundae. He wants to fight me so he can then retire. I would like to fight him too, but after I fight him and win the fight, what happens next? These days, yeah, there’s a lot of money to be made, but I don’t fight for the money. My motivation is to be the best. Like we said, to be the Wayne Gretzky of my sport. So if I fight him, what happens next? It will be over. So yes, I want the fight, but I want to take it when I decide the time is right, not when he wants the fight to happen.

“On top of that, he weighs 234 pounds; I weigh 188. So there’s a big weight difference. I’ve fought guys who were bigger — I’m not scared of him — it’s just that I will take this fight when it makes sense for me. I just came back from an injury, there’s money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won’t be able to come back to my weight class.

“First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds. When I am ready and when I want the fight, that’s when it will happen.”

In an interview with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre discussed his stance on the pending Anderson Silva super fight.

UFC president Dana White wants to make this dream match a reality and Anderson Silva is ready to jump in the cage. However, GSP won’t commit and still remains strong on his stance when asked about the bout.

  1. Cory says:

Silva needs to come down to 170 – title for title – can’t wait…..

    • TheTude says:

Silva will never come down to 170, goerges needs to come up to 185 and challenge silva fo the middlweight title, that would be a the only way to do it. GSP still havs alot of work to do at welterweight though, Hendricks, Diaz then he should make his move up. in the mean time lets see silva KO Bisping or Wiedman, and Johnny Bones. Then Silva can step back down to Middle weight, kill GSP and retire

    • Jenuel says:

Why should Silva have to drop nearly 70lbs (according to GSP) to fight GSP when GSP doesn’t even have to do much to fight at 185?

BJ moved up in weight twice to fight GSP with no excuses. Silva has the better UFC record, and he’s also the bigger draw.

Silva should have the rights to when and where this fight should happen. Not GSP.

    • davefl says:

@cory…spoken like a really uneducated mma idiot…”anderson needs to come to 170 title for title” i think for both titles to be on the line would be impossible… u need to fight in your weightclass to put your title up…idiot…anyways gsp is a coward.he has been saying this for the last 4years…and last time he said this shit he said he weighs 197 not now hes bogger..gsp is coward…it alll dont matter cuz hendrix would knock his head off

  2. MONEY FLOYD says:

Come on GSP, u already beat one of the greatest fighters for the P4P in BJ PENN, now lets see u fight Silva. Anderson is right BJ PENN is one of the greatest fighters ever, he never backs down from a fight, even fought and arguably beat LYOTO when Lyoto was a HW. BJ Penn has only lost to shitty wrestlers who dry hump him, and Diaz of course, bc he decided to stand and not take him down like he did round 1 Easily. Learn from Penn Brother

  3. ordinary says:

    ridiculous. just ridiculous.
for starters, anderson was an out-of-shape 217 the other day, not 234. and gsp was just 197 the day after his fight with condit, not 188. these two are not that far off when in shape.

2nd, why does he think he can’t go back to his weight class? a lot of fighters have done that. it’s only a few lbs heavier at catchweight anyway.

3rd, if he wants to be the best, he has to beat the best. i guess being the highest paid fighter in UFC history has gone to his head.

oh…and just who have you fought that was bigger, georges? first you’re going to complain that he’s too big, but then you say you’re not scared because you’ve fought bigger guys. like who, exactly? riiiight.

  5. blue says:

It seems to me like GSP wants this to be his retirement fight.

  6. fapo says:

yep, there’s still 3 or 4 fights for these guys before they should fight each other, for GSP there’s Hendricks, Diaz, maybe rematch with Conditt, his gay friend Rory Madonald, and BJ PENN 3 (haha wishful thinking)

As for silva there still is, Wiedman, Jonny Bones, Bisping and Hendo and Cain when he comes down from HW (just wishfull thinking again, sure it will never happen)

    • realist says:

GSP doesnt have to move up a weight class to fight silva, he can fight at 178, and then he doesnt have to cut from 200+ to 170 he could just cut to 178, then next fight verses Hendricks he just cuts the 8 lbs. GSP Your a pussy plain and simple, your not really a pussy but you are acting like one. You will never fight unless you have every advantage your way, because your worried about your legacy, well your legacy was that you are afraid to fight without a advatage, vaseline or whatever you need. I hope Hendricks beats your ass so your fight with Silva means nothing if it is after that. You can’t sell a non title GSP vs Silva, get inline and then earn your spot GSP…LOL

  7. poobumwee says:

    GSP’s a fuckwit.

  8. Xaninho says:

Fukc that Silva doesn’t weigh 234, he weighed in at 202 when he fought Bonnar. They weigh about the same. So he wants it on his conditions? I guess he wants to wait until Silva is in his 40’s?

Never mind him, don’t let Silva fight GSP so GSP will always have people say he’s not the p4p because Silva would have whooped his ass.

    • Jujitsu Player says:

You post some real retarded sh!t on here..just saying.

It’s well known Silva walks around well over 200lb and has one of the biggest cuts in MMA to get down to 185lb which is why he looks massive next to most of his opponents. GSP on the other hand has a very easy time making 170lb and doesn’t fluctuate much in between fights.

For me Silva is clearly trying to dodge Jones because he knows he would get destroyed so he’s trying to pick a fight with a much smaller guy who’s giving away about 4 inches in height.

I think he’d probably get a shock against GSP if they fought at say 178lb.No way could Silva defend GSP’s take downs so I could see GSP taking by decision.

  9. BJPennRules says:

GSP, GSP, just admit it you are afraid to fight the Spider..your not the only one but please..but please stop lying…I know you are the gayweather of MMA.

  10. mean170 says:

No way is the weight difference that huge. GSP wants no part of Silva. He and his coaches don’t even want to fight at a 177 catchweight.

  11. mmafan1225 says:

I still don’t understand why GSP has to fight Silva to be considered the G.O.A.T. Y can’t he be the greatest 170 pounder of all time. That’s his weight class and where he chooses to fight. Spider beating him doesn’t make him better. GSP vs Spider is only for show. GSP should never take this fight unless he plans on staying at 185. Its a whole different world of trainging for GSP at that weight.

  12. Headblader says:

I want to see him fight Jon Jones first anyway.

  13. Norton says:

Too much to lose for a badge of honor. This is why there are weight classes folks, to keep the playing field as even as possible. Besides GSP is in his early 30’s and has many prime years left where AS’ career is winding down. It would be a huge draw for PPV and $ goes, but what if GSP loses-then what? If AS wins he retires, GOAT! where as GSP has several fighting years left if he remains healthy.

  14. hellawaits says:

  15. whatever says:

TBH this is a very smart and understandable choice all who say otherwise… put urself in his position…

  16. Dana White says:

    GSP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!

  17. Robert says:

Think Hendricks should get his shot, he’s earned it. Then Diaz and if he beats them both fight Silva. There’s too much business in his own weight class to handle before a fight like this. Think the guys that have earned their shot shouldn’t have to wait that long for it.

  18. Mick says:

Very smart choice GSP is making, this is a game and he is playing his cards well. GSP has a mission and is proving the critics wrong, achieving slowly to be the ultimate p4p. For him to change weight and train is a total different training on its own and takes alot of time to adjust, giving Anderson credit for already skillful at the higher weight class for so many years. Gsp will only be putting himself back to fight Anderson right now. 2014 will be that year to do it and if Anderson isn’t around then that’s just how the cookie crumbles. Gsp won’t just fight Anderson for Dana and all u clowns to put stress on him achieving his goals, he will continue to be smart and fight Anderson when his job is done at welterweight and then he should move to middle weight while on the up to fight Anderson. GSP is getting stronger, more skillful, his timing is important and he will win against Anderson when the time comes and prove to the critics wrong again.

  19. Anthony says:

    lol thoughs weights are bs

  20. Techno Striker says:

234?188?Gsp is full of shit.Gsp looked well over 200 pounds against Condit.Anderson 234?He’s just making shit up now.

  21. Ker says:

I am a fan of both, but I don’t see why GSP has so many critics of his choice here. Silva is the one pushing for this fight to happen. He should have to do it on GSP’s terms. I’ve heard Silva say, at LEAST 3 times, that he can easily make 170 to fight. If that’s the case, why push GSP into fighting at a higher weight? You all may not realize this, but GSP is playing his cards right. I guarantee he is going to get a huge payday out of this when all is said and done, and they do fight!

  22. marcus says:

Didnt GSP walk around at like 200 when he was training for the Dan Hardy fight? No matter what by the time the cage door closes,Silva will be like 15 lbs heavier then GSP. Fight for the belt at 185 or catch weight at 180

  23. SILVAISWHACK says:

You guys are all WHACK to think GSP is scared. What about SILVA? He’s scared to fight JONES… plain and simple… stop picking on the smaller guy and move up and fight jones..

  24. Jessa says:

If the fight will happen according to GSP’s will, that would be unfair on Silva’s part.

  25. Sammo says:

For one who are giving GSP shit for wanting Silva to cut down to170, you’re idiots. Silva has cut down to 168 before to fight and his shape was amazing, you’re ultimately just underestimating silva. Also Georges doesn’t want to jus cut or stay at the weight he is, he wants to gain muscle for a fight against silva because silva is obviously a bigger and more powerful man.

  26. John says:

it doesnt matter silva might be getting old but he doesnt fight like hes old i think he should stomp GSP and then stomp jones and if he still has fights in him the weidman, bisping and others can get there fights because i dont think they have done enought to earn a fight for the title against anderson silva

  27. A. Chung says:

It seems like GSP is afraid of Anderson and he wants to wait a couple of years hoping that father time will have caught up to Anderson by the time they finally meet in the Octagon.

  28. Tommy Gunnz says:

    GSP´s right!

IMO: Silva should fight Wiedman b4 he can step away from MW.Then, after that he should fight JBJ(Bcuz he´s all ready fought @ LHW ). Then maybe GSP cleaned out WW. Then he can step up to MW and fight Silva. But thats onlt my opinion, who gives a fuck :)

  29. SinCe 2004 says:

WOW… I would respect Gsp more if he would just be honest and say he doesnt want to be embarrassed by Anderson.

  30. slacker says:

GSP is wimping out again. Now is the perfect time. If Silva’s actual fight weight is an issue, then just say you will never fight him because he is way too big for you. Stop dancing around it. Man it’s pathetic. Anyways, the 1 & 2 lb. for lb. are Silva and Jones. Plus, they are closer in weight. That is the fight to make!

  31. yeahrightman says:

Im going to level with you George. You have no legacy. You are the most boring, useless excuse for a champion this sport has ever seen. You can’t finish a fight, you take tonnes of damage even in your wins, and you are a coward just like Jon Jones. I don’t even care, it’s not a superfight, you won’t even be able to beat Hendrix let alone step to Silva. So put some more ice on your bruises bro, you got nothin for Silva. Nuttin’

  32. Josiah says:

hahaha…i, my friends am of no doubt a GSP fan..coz i’m just so amazed how he does the same ‘ol sh*t, over & over again and nobody can even stop him, he implements so well that his opponents skills are neutralized, damn…and i believe that if he fights silva right now at maybe around 178lb he can pull this off, i mean, his ability to avoid serious damage, just lately his ability to recover and his serious wrestling skills will be an edge…but man, what are you think’n george fight silva now dude???????

  33. lol says:

lol gsp is already the p4p before the silva fight he fought bj and defeated him twice once when he was the lightweight to say georges is ridiculous is far from reality hes smart anderson is the biggest person hes gunna fight he doesnt wanna rush it, no need to bash either fighter i like both and there both going for the same thing, gsp just got off an injury even though he did have a good fight with condit theres more in his weightclass let him become the best ww champ then superfight

  34. Javs says:

Anderson actually said in an interview that he walks around 220 to 225, he is that big!! I don’t know why half the peolple on this website think its so improbable. Secondly Anderson would murder GSP. Does anyone really think GSP could dominate Anderson?

Blah blah blah. Look at all you fools. Like anyone gives a fuck what ya’ll think about this fight. Go back to tugging it to gay porn. Silva/Bones is the true superfight end of story.

  36. davefl says:

gsp has been sayn this same shit for 4 years..the only thing thats changed is gsp is bigger and somehow is 188 when befor he said 197..this bitch scared…it dont matter cuz hendrix will ko his ass…diaz vs hedrix should be the fight for num 1 contender…but ufc dont want diaz for champ

  37. eh says:

Yeah, I don’t think these top level cage fighters are scared so much. Definantly more to do with money and trying to garner an advantage, but scared? Nah, they wouldn’t be doing cage fighting at this level if they were scared of other fighters.

  38. Some Guy says:

I love how he complains about Silva’s weight. Look at Lesnar vs. Couture. Couture was like 225 and Lesnar’s fight day weight is about 280. The Heavyweight division is like 5 divisions in one.

  39. kris says:

  40. Mantion says:

I agree why the rush? Just let Silva retire. Its not going to be a good fight. Its going to be the same shit, Silva runs from the fight forcing his opponent to either do nothing or over commit. Silva never tries to wins he just tries not to lose.

  41. anotherday says:

The fight start’s standing up GSP has no f****k chance his nothing but a little punk, after his last fight he said, i need some vacation and talk to my couch to see what’s next, this fool is scared he just needs to admit…

  42. theo says:

i think its not a good deal..silva even already beat people whos bigger than hi and won by KO…i think its not about fear for gsp to fight silva..but lets be realistic…gsp dont have o fight silva
