GSP Firm On Not Fighting Teammate Rory MacDonald, But Says “Rory Will Be The Champion”

There are two people standing between GSP and Rory in the UFC’s welterweight rankings: Johny Hendricks, and Carlos Condit. But it’s GSP and Rory themselves who are standing in the way of these men ever locking horns inside the Octagon.

“No. No, I’m not interested,” says St-Pierre, laughing at the notion. MacDonald, mirroring the sentiments of St-Pierre, says their understanding surpasses loyalty.  ”[It's] a friendship. Georges has done a lot for me as a young person. He welcomed me to Montreal. He was one of the only people to help me a lot when I first got here. These things I don’t forget.”

St-Pierre, who has taken the young fighter under his wing after his move from British Columbia to Montreal’s TriStar gym in August 2010, says he’s learned just as much from his protégé as he’s passed on.

“If you reverse the situation, we fight each other every day in training,” says St-Pierre. “He helped me get better as a martial artist and I help him get better as a martial artist as well. I’m not interested in fighting him. There’s other ways of doing things. I have plans for the future, other things. I can’t talk about it right now, but people will see soon.”

“I believe Rory will be champion. He’s got all the attributes physically, mentally. No doubt about that. He’s the new guy, the new generation. He’s the crème of the crème.”

Could St-Pierre be thinking about a move up in weight class, if he were to defeat Bigg Rigg at UFC 167? Or, with St-Pierre due to appear in 2014′s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, could the UFC champ be looking to move on from fighting altogether?

It’s too early to tell exactly what GSP has in store for us and for his career, but the champ seems confident that he will never want or need to fight his good friend and training partner. But can the same be said about Mister MacDonald?

Dana White doesn’t believe so.

“First of all, Rory lives in his [GSP's] house, meaning his gym. He lives in Montreal, trains with him, Georges says all kinds of good things about him. How weird would it be if he got on the mic and said, ‘I want Georges St. Pierre and I want his belt’? It would be a little awkward flying back to Montreal and training on Monday. I think these guys are handling it like professionals, doing their thing and when the day comes when they’re there, I guarantee you they’ll fight.”

Dana had a little more to say:

“If you don’t think that he wants to fight Georges St-Pierre, if you don’t think he wants a shot at that 170-pound title, and if you don’t think he wants to be the world champion and make the kind of money that Georges St-Pierre makes, you’re crazy, my friend.”

“When you get there, I guarantee you it will be a different conversation,” White said. “And I also guarantee you that in no way, shape or form does Georges St-Pierre think that Rory MacDonald does not want to fight him.”

Keep an eye on the UFC welterweight division, Penn Nation; the next few months should be quite interesting.
