GSP Credits Karate Not Wrestling For His Takedown Ability

“That’s what I use for my takedown, the shoot, that people see, it’s zero wrestling. It has nothing to do with my wrestling. My wrestling is once I get that leg, I’ll finish the takedown. But how I get in and out is because of karate. People are like, ‘no way, Karate, no.’ And I’m like, ‘yes.’ Karate allows me to cut the distance and take the people down. I have a very good single, a very good double and very good penetration. It’s because of my leg, the way I do it, and the timing is because of my karate. I wrestle, too, but my karate is primary. Before I started wrestling, I was a karate guy pure.”

UFC Welterweight champion GSP, told Joe Rogan during Rogan’s podcast that he doesn’t give credit to his wrestling training for his takedowns inside the cage.

Karate? That’s what the champ says gives him the abilities to retain his title.

Finally from the man himself. I’ve had some heated discussions about what GSP’s primary fightingstyle is. I knew it was Kyokushin karate but the guy kept insisting GSP was a wrestler primarily ………..You know I’m talking about you

  2. Dan Jenkins says:

Although St Pierres base is kyokushin he has strayed from the style. From what I understand about kyokushin is that it is a hardcore art in the way they train. The founder apparently lived in the mountains for a time punishing his body so he wouldn’t feel pain. Even in modern training their sparring is full contact. I understand its mma but I feel the sport is becoming more of an athletic contest than a fight and that’s not why I started watching.

So what’s his point? Even if someone confused it with wrestling and its not its still boring. That shit ain’t foolin me into thinking its exciting or I should look at it differently.

^^^ I just don’t get how you can’t see this as exciting and dominating. If you have tried this, what GSP does is incredible. He makes it look easy, and I’ll tell you it is not!! Now, I’ll bring a little context and clarity into this for those ignorant of what is going on here. First, GSP, is trying to distance himself from the controversy swirling around him about wearing the rising sun gear to say that he wears this because of his dedication to his long time karate training and NOT to the Japanese army and its brutality. Secondly, What GSP is saying is that he uses his karate as a SETUP for his wrestling. Has anybody actually read what he wrote?…you know who I am referencing here… What GSP said he does is use his karate to close the distance and sets up his takedowns and GNP which is ALL wrestling, If he says so then OK. But he also uses his jabs for his setups into wrestling single double takedowns. There it is. Super exciting and dominant!!!

  5. KIDD433 says:

He’s boring as shit.u like watching him because u like seeing greased up fags dry hump each other…Dominant? What a joke

    • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

I’ll just respectfully fukcin disagree with you and chalk it to you being a retarded moron who wouldn’t know a dominant performance even if you were picked up and dumped on your head. Wrestling is the King.
