QUESTION AND ANSWERS FOR BJ PENN!:
When and why did you start training for fighting? A tae kwon do instructor moved near my house in 96. He took a few private lessons in jiu-jitsu. I never did tae kwon do. He saw me and my friends hanging out around the neighborhood and asked my father to have them come wrestle with him. I never wanted to go and one day my dad was like if you don’t go he won’t stop asking me. So I did it to please my dad. When I went there he tapped me out and my mind started rolling and never stopped.

What ranks and titles have you held? UFC Lightweight Champion, former UFC World Welterweight champion. Rumble on the Rock lightweight champion. I am the most decorated jiu-jitsu athlete in America. I am the first non-Brazilian to win the world championships at the black belt level.

Do you have any heroes? I have had so many and still do. It wouldn’t be fair to say just one. I have new influences everyday in life and fighting.

What is your favorite technique? My heart and mind are my most important things. I know it doesn’t sound too original but I will prepare properly for each fight and never give up.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It feels great fighting in the UFC. When I was younger that is the only place I wanted to fight professionally.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to school to learn some wrestling but wasn’t too serious about the academics.

What was your job before you started fighting? None.

KALA Kalohe HOSE.....WAIANAE, OAHU

KALA KOLOHE HOSE
NICKNAME: --
HOMETOWN: Waianae, Hawaii
AGE: 25
HEIGHT: 5.9
WEIGHT: 185
STYLE: Slugger and Striker
RECORD: 4-1-0Fighter ProfileKala Kolohe Hose, the Hawaiian "Rocky Balboa" is a powerful knockout artist, as all of wins have come via first round KO. Kala Kolohe debuted in Icon as a 250lb heavyweight, but since cut down to 185lbs through rigorous training and careful dieting. Kala Kolohe is now considered one of the most dangerous middleweight strikers in Hawaii. he will face world-ranked Icon and EliteXC middleweight champ Ruthless Robbie Lawler in main event Icon Sport: Fearless on Dec 15th in Honolulu. The Icon belt will be on the line as these two face off in a contest that guarantees nothing short of the biggest bombs Hawaii fans have ever seen. and the anticipation of this event will be at an all-time high, as it has been delayed twice: once in June 2007 due to a shoulder injury Lawler sustauned while training and, again, in Sept 2007, when their title bout was preempted by the EliteXC: Uprising event.

Waianae's Kala Kolohe Hose, Icon Sport's top contender in the middleweight division, found quick victory with his first round knock-out of French tae-kwon-do & kickboxing champion Frederic Belleton in last night's ShoXC:Challenger Series mixed martial arts event at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Kala Kolohe's bout was televised nationally on Showtime.

Kala Kolohe improved his record to 5-1, with all of his wins coming via KO or TKO. He has not lost since 2005. Kala Kolohe is scheduled to headline the next Icon Sport event, which will be held at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu on March 15.

KENDALL "DA SPYDER" GROVE......MAUI BOY

From kendallgrovemma.com

You could say I started my career my freshman year in high school. I went to my first Brazilian Ju-Jitsu class and fell in love with da sport. After a little under a year of BJJ, my mom couldn’t pay for my classes so some of my boys said I should start wrestling. So I signed up and got hooked. After three years placing sixth in da State Championship in Hawaii at 170 and only being 150 pounds, there was no turning back.
Two years and fifteen jobs later, I made my way to Vegas and after just four days living in Vegas I got hooked up with Mark Lamion at J-Seck. After training and working full-time for about six months, I got asked to help Phil Baroni train for his fights. I said “yes”, and after one session Phil asked me if I’d ever fought before. I told him “no”, and he said I SHOULD.
The next day, I called a friend in Hawai’i to get me a fight and that’s how I started in MMA.

PO'AI SUGANUMA

Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME Table Mountain Casino, Friant, California

FRIANT, Calif. (April 6, 2008) – There were highlights aplenty during the latest EliteXC presentation of ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series Saturday on SHOWTIME at the Table Mountain Casino.

In a tough, hard fight, undefeated Giva “The Arm Collector’’ Santana established what is believed to be a mixed martial arts world record with his 10th consecutive victory by first-round submission, all by – what else ? -- arm bar.

Comebacking Fabricio “Morango” Camoes was sensational in his EliteXC and United States debut, Shayna “The Queen Of Spades’’ Baszler was phenomenal – again – and underrated Bao Quach won his seventh straight in a match he took on two day’s notice.

But fans and viewers were left with a sour taste after an eagerly anticipated main event was stopped – most agreed, prematurely – by the referee 15 seconds after it began.

Once-beaten Po’ai Suganuma (9-1), of Hilo, Hawaii, was declared the winner over previously undefeated Jared Hamman (10-1) of San Bernardino, Calif., in a fight most felt should have been allowed to continue at least for a few more seconds.

Suganuma had rocked Hamman with a right hand, and then the Hawaiian dropped him with a beautiful right knee to the face. But a moment before he could pounce and land what potentially might have been the finishing blow, or blows, he was pulled off by the referee and declared a TKO winner.

“No one likes to win in controversial fashion,’’ Suganuma said. “I thought I had him dazed but I don’t think he was completely out. I was a little surprised the ref did what he did but only because I wanted to hit him again. If he wants to fight again, that’s fine with me. Let’s do it.’’

The generally gentleman-like Hamman, a college football coach, was lived afterward. “I am so mad right know,’’ he said. “I don’t know what happened or why it was stopped. I wanted to keep fighting. I felt I could keep fighting. I don’t want to make excuses. I absolutely want a rematch.’’

A return match will definitely be made, EliteXC Live Events Vice President Jared Shaw promised. “You can bet there will be a rematch in the near future,’’ he said. “No one is more concerned for a fighter’s safety than we are, but this fight was just stopped too soon.’’

There was no controversy in the four other televised fights that aired on SHOWTIME at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). The card was the third in three weeks for Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live fight division, Elite XC – all on SHOWTIME -- and fifth in 29 days.

MMA Hawaii is where I can say things and express things that only true locals from the Islands will be able to understand. I can "AWWRIGGGHT" and they will understand! As a people we are proud of our heritage and our land..........Mixed Martial Arts/Local Music/RESPECT of our land and upbringing...........................only we will understand but others will admire.
