Griffin, Bonnar to go into the UFC Hall of Fame together

They are often credited for helping launch the UFC and MMA into the stratosphere so it’s only fitting that Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar will put the ultimate cherry on top of their respective careers together.

Nearly immediately after UFC President Dana White and Griffin announced his retirement from competition at the UFC 160 post-fight press conference on Saturday, White also announced that Griffin and Bonnar will both be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

The induction will take place on July 4th weekend at the UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas that coincides with UFC 162 that is headlined by an Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman for the middleweight championship.

Griffin and Bonnar entered the UFC Octagon on April 9, 2005 at The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale in a fight that would determine the first 205-pound winner of the reality show. The fight is still talked about today and considered one of the most significant in history. The two poured themselves out for 15 minutes with Griffin emerging the winner in a close decision. While Griffin was given a UFC contract for his win, in a surprise move, White also granted a contract to Bonnar immediately inside the cage.

Griffin and Bonnar will become the tenth and eleventh members of the UFC Hall of Fame, joining Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Royce Gracie, Mark Coleman, Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Chuck Liddell, Charles Lewis and Tito Ortiz.

While Griffin went on to claim a light heavyweight title, Bonnar never reached championship heights, which brings up the question; does Bonnar deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame on the merits of his TUF performance alone?

Well to be honest Griffin doesn’t deserve a hall of fame spot based on his title win. I don’t feel everyone that wins a title deserves a spot. So yes, this is based on their impact on the sport and helping to make it more mainstream. Bonnar deserves his spot based on this.

Sorry but these are two SORRY ass fighters. First off Griffin had a mediocre career…his highlights were defeating Rampage for the belt (with almost nothing but leg kicks) beating Tito…and Shogun. But other that that he was a punching bag. And Bonnar has been busted for roids on 2 seperate occasions….the last one being his LAST fight against Silva. I think BJ Penn, Vitor Belfort, Frank Shamrock & Don Frye should all be inducted…..and these 2 should just ride off into the sunset holding hands. Because really…..their fight didn’t do as much for MMA/UFC as it is given credit for. I mean the reality is you put two average guys with a lot of heart in the ring and they beat each other to the end……their skills were matched at mediocre. I give the Ken Shamrock/Tito Ortiz, or Hughes/Penn, or Hughes/GSP rivalry MUCH more credit for bringing limelight to the UFC. These 2 dudes always were at best….AVERAGE.

ALWAYS some side show bob has to chime in saying “Your stupid, you know nothing about MMA” but see I spelled it correct because I AM NOT STUPID, unlike yourself. Second….I was watching MMA long before these two fucking doofs were on TV. So don;t go thinking you are the almighty announcer of MMA knowledge. You are probably a noob just like the rest of the dildos that swear Forrest is a legend…and deserves HOF. Shut the F@CK UP and keep your opinion to yourself….no matter what you say you will not convince my eyes that can plainly see this guy SUCKED HARD!!! Just like your mom….cheers schmuck.

These guys get credit because they made MMA more mainstream by appearing on the first TUF season.

Before that most people at home didn’t know what MMA was until it became a reality TV show.

I also think the Bonnar Griffin fight gets too much credit for the rise of the UFC they were just the first to be shown on cable tv/free TV wich allowed the masses to learn about the Tito/Liddell rivalry the first UFC rival that ppl could get involved pick sides ect. comparason to the imfamous Boxing Hevyweight rivals of the past
