‘GLORY 11: Chicago’ Main Card Play-By-Play and Live Results

Rico Verhoeven defeated Gokhan Saki by Majority Decision (29-27, 29-28, 28-28)
Daniel Ghita defeated Anderson Silva by way of TKO (Punch) 1:56 of Round 1
Errol Zimmerman defeated Hesdy Gerges by way of TKO (2 Knockdowns) 0:38 of Round 3
Joseph Vatellini defeated Karim Ghajji by way of TKO (2 Knockdowns) 2:53 of Round 3

Heavyweight Tournament Semi-Final Bout: Rico Verhoeven vs. Gokhan Saki

Round 1 – Verhoeven punches Saki just as he tripped over and the referee rules it a knockdown! Saki pushed the referee but was not disqualified. Jeeze. Verhoeven is doing a good job standing his ground, utilizing leg kicks to keep Saki at bay. Saki whiffs on a highkick. Saki’s back is against the ropes Verhoeven peppers him with a few hooks. Saki presses the action in the last ten seconds but Verhoeven defends with leg kicks and the round is over. 10-9 Verhoeven.

Round 2 – Verhoeven is keeping on with his jab and is doing well but Saki landed a really nice body kick. Saki lands a left hook to the body and a left hook to the head. Verhoeven gets kicked in the nads, but Saki wasn’t stopped by the referee and followed through with another kick to Verhoeven’s legs as he was walking away. Ouch. Saki is playing a dangerous game. Saki lands a flurry of vicious punches and he smells blood; Verhoeven is backing off. Verhoeven gets a few seconds to recover and is out of danger. Saki is still pressing as the horn sounds. 10-9 Saki.

Round 3 – They’re exchanging punches and nobody really got the upperhand until Saki landed a straight right while Verhoeven was pressed against the ropes. Verhoeven lands a nice left hook to Saki’s liver which causes him to limit his strikes for a few seconds. Verhoeven throws a quadruple jab but only one lands. Saki misses another spinning kick. Saki looks like he’s tired. Verhoeven is now the one who is pressing the action and Saki’s back is against the ropes. Saki lands a spinning back fist as the horn sounds. 10-9 Verhoeven.

Heavyweight Tournament Semi-Final Bout: Daniel Ghita vs. Anderson Silva

Round 1 – Ghita is keeping a tight guard. Ghita lands a serious leg kick. Silva responds with one of his own. They exchange a flurry of punches. Silva lands a leg kick that makes Ghita walk silly for a second. Both men are landing powerful shots, but they’re barely being blocked so neither man is in danger. Ghita hits Silva with a very odd looking punch. It looked like Ghita missed the jab and Silva fell to the floor. Very odd looking. He stands up but the referee calls it off; Silva can barely stay standing. I’ve no idea what connected. The commentators are saying Silva got caught on the temple. Either way, fight is over.

Heavyweight tournament (Reserve Bout): Errol Zimmerman vs. Hesdy Gerges

Round 1 – Gerges is charging but Zimmerman utilized body punches and leg kicks. Gerges doesn’t care, though, as he still presses forward and pops him while he’s in the corner. Gerges is attacking Zimmerman’s leg, hard. Zimmerman drops Gerges with a body punch/hook combination. Gerges gets up right away and the action resumes after the 8-Count. Gerges is popping Zimmerman with jabs. Zimmerman has Gerges cornered now and is landing with hooks and straights and crosses—oh my! Bell sounds and we’re done this round. 10-9 Zimmerman.

Round 2 – The pace has slowed down a bit. Zimmerman is attacking the body and Gerges is continuing to throw the leg kicks. Gerges’ leg kicks got blocked a few times and he tripped as a result, but it doesn’t count as a knockdown. Zimmerman has Gerges in the corner again and is peppering him up, but he makes it out of there. Both men are really tired and the pace of the fight has slowed down. Two clinches within ten seconds. Gerges lands two knees to the body and a hook as the round ends. 10-9 Gerges.

Round 3 – Gerges is attacking Zimmerman but Gerges eats a left counterhook and he falls to his bum! He’s back up and the referee let’s him fight on. In a matter of seconds, though, Gerges is back on the mat. That’s two knockdowns, the fight is officially over. The referee waves it off.

Welterweight: Joseph Vatellini vs. Karim Ghajji

FiOS feed cut for ten minutes and I rejoined the fight while the decision was being read.

Light Heavyweight: Tyrone Sprong vs. Nathan Corbett

Round 1 – They touch gloves and we are underway. Corbett whips a head kick but Spong blocks it. Spong takes a knee to the body and then a leg kick. Corbett takes a leg kick that sends him spinning 90 degrees. Corbett falls down but it was a trip. He’s back up. Corbett connects with a jab and a body kick. Spong throws a straight but it’s blocked. Corbett throws a five punch combination. Spong keeps connecting with leg kicks to the inside and outside. Spong connects with two livershots; one a kick and one a punch. Corbett’s body is taking some serious punishment. Corbett gets rattled with a left hook! He’s resting on the ropes and Spong seems to be letting him recover. Bell sounds. The round opened even, but Spong took it in the end. Corbett’s body is red. 10-9 Spong.

Round 2 – Corbett connects with a kick to the body, but seconds later he gets dropped by a hard left hook. He’s back up, makes the 8-count and we are back underway. Spong is cornering Corbett and is dictating where the fight goes. Spong almost drops Corbett but it seems to have been a trip. A mere five seconds later, Corbett gets dropped yet again. Spong connected with a dominating left hook; that’s the story of the fight, isn’t it? The referee calls the fight off and we are done; Spong is the victor.

Heavyweight Finals: Daniel Ghita vs. Rico Verhoeven

Round 1 – Ghita is bouncing on his toes while Verhoeven is flat on his feet. Ghita connects with two powerful leg kicks. Ghita with a right hook. Ghita goes for a knee and Verhoeven pushes him which causes Ghita to fall, but it was a slip. He’s back up. Verhoeven lands a straight to the body. Ghita lands a straight. Ghita is controlling where this fight goes and connects with a body kick while Verhoeven is cornered. Whenever Verhoeven is going in to attack, Ghita lands a counterpunch. Verhoeven finally connects with a straight right. Verhoeven lands an inside leg kick as the round ends. 10-9 Ghita.

Round 2 – Ghita and Verhoeven are both connecting with a series of good leg kicks. Left uppercut/right hand from Verhoeven but Ghita comes back with a combo of his own. Verhoeven has Ghita pressed against the ropes and is connecting with straights and uppercuts. Verhoeven is picking up momentum because Ghita is slowing down. Ghita’s power makes up for his fatigue, though. Ghita gets rocked with an uppercut from Verhoeven, but Ghita answers with a head kick. Ghita eats some punches but Ghita rocks Verhoeven with a right straight. They collide heads but it doesn’t seem to phase them. The bell sounds as they exchange leg kicks. 10-9 Ghita.

Round 3 – Ghita connects with three punches that rock Verhoeven’s head. They exchange a couple flurries of punches and Verhoeven gets hit in the balls, the fight pauses. We’re back underway. Their fatigue is showing as they are constantly clinching. Verhoeven eats a left hook but Ghita is eating a number of punches himself. They clinch and Ghita falls over out of exhaustion, but it’s not ruled a knockdown. Ghita’s mouth is agape and he is gasping for air! Verhoeven hits a left hook and Ghita lands a body kick and the crowd is on their feet. Ten seconds left and Ghita eats a SERIOUS head kick and right hook! Bell sounds. 10-9 Verhoeven
