Gilbert Melendez Wants Fight With Khabib Nurmagomedov, Khabib Agrees

The bay area fighters are at odds once again.

After a storied rivalry between Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson, the UFC’s former title challenger, Gilbert Melendez has a new AKA fighter on his radar, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The former Strikeforce champ spoke on the potential matchup in a recent interview with FOX LA.

“I know this up-and-comer by the name of Khabib, I think people would like to see that match up. You know, he’s not the biggest name so business-wise it’s probably not the best move, but I’m intrigued by it. It would be a great challenge, everyone’s hyped up on him. Him and Pat Healy were two guys on winning streaks, and they fought each other and he won. So he’s a guy up there.”

Khabib, a fighter who really wants to break into the number one contender slot, responded to the callout with an instagram shot of the following:

  1. mean170 says:

This would be a dangerous fight for Melendez. Nurmagomedov is still a little under the rader. There are easier fights for Gil higher up the mountain.

  2. ThaGreenBandit says:

Ballsy move by Melendez. Nurmagomedov is a highly dangerous fight to take, and he’s definitely not under the radar in my opinion. Risky fight for any top 10 fighter, or even top 5, if you ask me.

  3. hanibal says:

That would be an amazing fight, Melendez is amazing and khabib is probably the best up and coming fighter in the lightweight devision and one of the best ufc prospects overall, however, one thing nobody seems to have noticed about him is how he tires out and slows down considerably after the first round..
also he seems kinda small for this weight class, certainly way smaller than guys like bendo and Melendez so it’s gonna be a very tough fight for him..

  4. UFC 84 Forever says:

Interesting fight, could be risky for El Nino though.

  5. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

This might prove to be a big mistake by Melendez. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the Melendez-Sanchez like everyone else did. But it wasn’t the most technical fight and I think Khabib is the more technical fighter overall.

  6. Thesire says:

Khabib’s striking isn’t as technical as Melendez don’t let that brawl with Sanchez fool you. I think it’s a good match up, it a great opportunity for khabib to establish himself as a lightweight contender and for Melendez to show why he’s truly the number 2, I wouldn’t say it’s a bad idea if he truly ain’t the best. What kinda fighter would want the easiest route to prove to be the best anyway
