Gilbert Melendez Ready To Rise Through The UFC Ranks And Prove He’s Number 1

“It’s exciting that the boss definitely wants me over to the UFC, because it’s definitely a good move for me. As far as I’m concerned (Jorge) Masvidal is the next guy on my list, and I’m focusing 100-percent on him, so before I get too excited, I’m just focusing on tearing that guy up. But definitely my goal is to be in the UFC, so if we can get that there sooner than later, I’m all for it. Basically, it would be a phone call from Dana saying drop everything, you’re coming to the UFC. I’d be there in a heartbeat. Money doesn’t really mean nothing at this point, my money’s good. I’m happy with my money. If he told me to come fight for the same price, I would do it… Either way, it’s inevitable. I’m coming for all the 55-pounders and I really want to prove I’m No. 1. It would be nice to get a title shot, but if I need to come through it and work my way up, I’m more than willing. Part of being No. 1 is beating everyone, every match-up. I think I can beat every style out there. It doesn’t really matter to me. Whatever Dana wants. Whatever he wants, I’ll do.”

In a recent discussion with the guys over at, Strikeforce champ, Gilbert Melendez talks about Dana White’s recent proclamation that he is UFC bound.

Should the UFC give him an immediate title shot, or make him rise through the lightweight ranks like any new signee?

fuck you!!!!!!!!!!!!! bj penn all day everyday baby

  2. parkman says:

would love to see him get through guillard, or pettis if he gets through jeremy stevens

  3. brian evans says:

i think he should work his way up through the top 3 contenders for the title for the ufc just to be fare to the other fighters who worked there way up .

  4. john says:

Bj knock his ass out beat the bully and get your title back

Wow.. Gilbert will make a lot of the UFC contenders look like a joke.. Can’t wait.. His BJJ wrestling and striking is unstoppable..

    • Fortyb4five says:

lmao ok Jaris. Diego Sanchez was unstoppable too wasn’t he?

    • The Dude says:

      His STRIKING???

Just because he can outstrike a couple of guys on the JV don’t start thinking he’s not gonna look like a mediocre striker in the big leagues, his striking is sloppy as hell.

      Here’s the truth

Wrestling- his best attribute…. will be average in the UFC

BJJ- Purely defensive- he can avoid a sub, BJ will RNC him, but he can stay out of the way of everyone else’s subs….but, he ain’t submitting anyone

Striking- AWFUL- that’s the truth, his striking looks like shit. He’s sloppy, he can get away with it fighting japanese fighters, but he’d get smoked by the top 5, maybe the top 10 standing in the UFC.

He’ll be about a .500 fighter, he won’t beat Frankie, Gray, Pettis, Bendo, Jim MIller, or any of those level guys. He’ll lose his first fight, then beat someone easy and be in “Wars” – he’ll be a fotn guy, not a champ.

      • Eric says:

        Well said Dude

      • Eduardo says:

Dude, BJ is done at 155! He can’t hang with Frankie Edgar or Maynard. Diaz is going to DESTROY Penn. And don’t give me that “depends on what BJ shows up” The Diego days are over! He’s over the hill. Gil would destroy Penn on the feet. I think Nate would beat BJ standing AND on the ground. His rubber guard b.s. doesn’t work anymore, why do you think he isn’t subbing anyone anymore?? Put him in there with a guy with a good chin and cardio like either of the Diaz’s or Gil and he’s done for. I know BJ has a loyal following, but you guys need to face it, his days are numbered. He couldn’t outbox Edgar, TWICE and he won’t be able to out box Diaz. Gil is a different type of monster. Penn had his moments, don’t expect to be back in title contention at 155. And after the Diaz fight, he won’t be at 170 either.

jaris aka angerfists in his asssholee is just mad from the pain of gettin fisted everyday for being a homo. that along with team gracie fighters all gettin exposed will mess with any wanksters ego. dont worry angerfists in ur assshole u will always be welcome here to be made fun of and ridiculed for being a moron. melendez probably knew he would lose to masvidal so he may as well try and sign w the ufc while he can still fool ppl like u he can actually beat real opponents that arent overhyped japanese fighters.

Your the moron man.. Gilbert has fought a lot of people besides Aoki and has smashed them.. Beat clay guidas ass and he’s ranked top 5 in the ufc..

Gil will prove me right so I could care less.. And as far as cesar gracie fight team goes they will all hold titles one day, even though most have already held them.

I hope you enjoyed Nates fight cause u will see a lot more of him as well WINNING!

  6. Eric says:

I dont think he can beat Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Melvin Guillard nor BJ Penn (If Penn goes down to 155)
I dont think this guy has beat top 155ers other that Clay Guida but that was back in 2006 in a “SPLIT” Decision.
I would like to see him fight Melvin Guillard (Thats if Gullard beats Joe Lauzon this week)

  7. Luke says:

Come on if you don’t know who Gilbert Melendez is your stupid.he is going to whup some ass and he doesn’t need to work his way up give home a title shot right away

  8. Jmad says:

I thnk he should have one fight against either Guillard (if he beats Lauzon) or maybe the winner of Stephens/ Pettis. Even the loser of Edgar/ Maynard would wrk. There’s a lot of potential matchups for him. If he wins any of those fights he should get a title shot.

  9. Nick says:

Fuck yeah! hope he gets there soon

  10. Creature says:

I like Gilbert and think hes a good fighter, but highly doubt he will be a UFC champ, I dont see him beating Maynard or Bendo for sure. and id have to say id give Pettis, Guillard, and even Donald Cerrone a good chance at beating Gilbert. I think Melendez is pretty even with Jim Miller, that would be a good fight to see where hes at in the Division.

  11. Just says:

Like the rest of those Cesar Gracie boys, good, but not good enough in the UFC. BJ will beat Nick like how Jake beat Jake.

    • Eduardo says:

Do you really believe that the ALWAYS underconditioned, smaller, Bj can beat the longer, bigger, and very well conditioned Diaz? Get serious! He couldn’t out box Edgar, how’s he going to outbox Diaz with a 4 inch reach advantage and a granite chin. Bj has a punchers chance, and then again Nick has an iron chin! Penns going to get peppered with jabs and body shots and Diaz will win by tko end of first or 2nd round. If it hits the mat, DIaz’s bjj is WAY better suited for MMA and Penns rubber gaurd b.s doesn’t work anymore. When was the last BJ Penn sub?? Exactly, Penns going to get wrecked, sorry dude. He’s done at 155 and at 170.

      • mmaislandjunkie says:

eduardo its obvious u love wannabe gangsters. nick lost to sherk diego and eery other real competitor hes faced. dont let the hype fool you, bj could easily be the champ of strikeforce and beat paul daley if he wanted to. mock frankie all u want but that guy is a gsp style fighter. geared for the points and thats all he did against bj. nicks style plays into bjs advantages. watch and learn youngin.

  12. Yessir says:

Melendez is an animal. He’s probably ready for a title shot but it wouldn’t be fare. He needs to wait in line for his turn. I say two fights against UFC top 155rs first.

  13. Jason says:

El Nino will smoke anyone UFC puts in his way. Kid is unstoppable.

  14. Shawn says:

Melendez needs to work his way through the ranks. I thought Shields needed to have a couple of more fights before St.Pierre too. Not saying they aren’t good enough for title shots. But there are other guys who are as well, but they have been putting time IN the UFC for years. It would be unfair for a “superstar” in another organization to step in and just given the shot, without proving themselves first. Don’t get me wrong I’m a fan of Melendez and Shields, but I’m also the type of guy that looks at hard work, dedication and being treated fairly for your sacrifice, and not get passed over for some new guy. Look at Story. It looked like he was on his way to being in the running for a title shot, after beating consecutively beating Hazelett, Hendrecks, and Alves. Then he gets beat by a no-name named Brenneman, that got his own name known by beating the rising star. Anything can happen in MMA, a dominant fighter like Melendez can face a up and coming lightweight fighter in the UFC and lose…or not. But the UFC needs to let guys like Melendez prove themselves inside the Octogan, before getting title shots. No favoritism.

  15. Eduardo says:

BJ is going to stand at the end of Nicks long reach and get peppered with body shots and jabs like every one else. If your hoping for BJ to knock him out, keep dreaming because Diaz has faced heavier hitters like Robby Lawler and Daley. They may not be as technical but they hit harder and Nick took there shots. I like to come on here to see you BJ fans get your hopes up about the guy, he’s done. Nick Diaz is the real deal, ask around. Penn can’t hang. He couldn’t outbox Edgar what’s he going to do with the better conditioned, bigger, and longer Diaz? Rubber Guard doesn’t work in MMA like it used to, Diaz’s bjj is better suited for MMA. Face the facts dude.
