Gilbert Melendez: ‘I’m going to make this a fight”

“I think I have the advantage in a couple of areas. I won’t go too much into detail. I’ve been in a lot of wars and I’ve been in a lot of battles. My chin has been tested and I like to test people’s chins as well. I’m a fighter. Maybe I wasn’t the most gifted athletically, but I’m a fighter who’s become an athlete. I think he’s an athlete who’s becoming a fighter. I think that’s the difference. He is very athletic, very mentally strong and very talented, but, I think I’m the scrapper in this thing and I’m going to make this a fight.”

Speaking with the Bleacher Report, Gilbert Melendez discusses this weekends fight against Benson Henderson in the UFC on FOX 7 main event.

  1. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Blah Blah Melendez lost his last fight against Thomson and he faked injuries to get out of defending his Strikeforce belt before making the transition to the UFC. He’s worth more as the last Strikeforce champ than as a former Strikeforce champ.

He is going to receive a one-sided beating.

  2. Rodriguez says:

To be honest I don’t see anybody beating Henderson right now. Not because these fighters aren’t good enough, but because he finds a way to win. The only person who had a chance is Edgar, and Pettis could maybe do some damage. I think he might hold the belt for a while.

  3. YoMama says:

Milendez is a beast. He has fought top competition around the world. If you want to cry about how close the Thompson fight as making him a weaker fighter, it just shows how little you know. Thompson is a beast as well, and could beat any LW in the UFC on any given day. These guys will earn many wins in the UFC, just like all the other top guys from Strikeforce have done. If it stays standing, Milendez wins this fight 9 out of ten times. If hendo gets on top then he could win. Dont underestimate Milendez ground and pound either.

  4. 123 says:

I agree, I think Gilbert Melendez will end it with elbows on the ground.

  5. Drew says:

That’s the only chance he has is to clip bendo and hopefully finish …..cardio goes to bendo but Melendez is that rocky type that if u keep him around long enough ima. Fight he will probably send u to a hospital as well so should be a good fight, but if bendo openly wins this 50-45 I wouldn’t be surprised . Bendo could beat Gsp and be holdn both belts

The way of the dutchman ^^^ let’s be serious Ben won a razor close decision over FE and was gifted one so that comment doesn’t make sense. Styles make fights and Gil is a beast. Ben couldn’t stop Edgar, Guida, or Pettis so don’t think it’s a lock that he is going to stop or dominate Gil. Gil is a beast and I personally think he is to gritty for Ben…I guess we will see

  7. 757 says:

Oh yeah …he didn’t stop Nate either. I guess people should start getting on him about stopping people like everyone jumps GSP and FE for it….just saying.

  8. Ddddddd says:

Tough fight to call considering these guys have been watching each other for a while. I could see this going either way depending on timing. Thompson had a great gameplan in the last fight and I’m sure Ben studied it. Frankie exsposed some things I could see Gilbert trying to exploit but with a nastier kind of tanacity. I’m stoked for this fight there’s a lot on the line and I don’t see either of these guys rollin over.
This card is crazy and with Nates fight and all that goes along with it this could also effect Gilbert’s performance and the pressure of being the third guy from their crew up for a strap.

  9. Slim Charles says:

I feel like the people that say “he’s an athlete and I’m a fighter ” crap more often than not end up losing the fight lol.

  10. Jake says:

    Frankie edgar already beat him

  11. 757 says:

^^^Agreed…at least once. You are correct
