Gegard Mousasi Open To UFC Move

“If you’re the Strikeforce champion, then you have a lot more possibilities. I still have a contract with Strikeforce. It makes sense to be a champion there before something like fighting in the UFC can happen. But I don’t know. I’m just focusing on Strikeforce, and eventually it’s not my decision. I just need to keep winning my fights. That’s the most important thing… Financially it’s always good to fight a lot, but I think now the most important thing is to get big fights. I think that’s the more important thing than fighting a lot. I need to fight the people, the fighters that are very recognizable to the fans. I need to fight fighters that are very famous or [fans will] know or are ranked very high… I think eventually everyone will end up in the UFC if you want to be considered one of the best. I’m very open for that, but it’s not really up to me. It depends on if they would like me in the UFC or not, but I’m open to that.”

Former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion and current DREAM champion, Gegard Mousasi, talks to sherdog radio about his future in the fight game.

Still locked into his Strikeforce contract, the top 10 205’er has his eyes set on a future with the UFC. However, after dropping a decision loss to “King Mo” he has left many wondering if he would stand-out in the UFC’s deep light-heavyweight division.

Thoughts?

He says ge wants to go to heavyweight.
I think it’s a bad idea coz UFC HW are 4 real.
He will get fucked up by Cain, JDS, Overeem, Lesnar, etc.
He better stay on middleweight or lightheavyweight.

    • Michael says:

I agree- but I do think he would fair very well in the light heavy weight division. He struggles with top notch wrestlers, but I think he is probably just outside the top 5 in the UFC light heavy division.
Also, I think I remember reading that he has fought at 185 in the past, I could be wrong, but if that is the case I think he would be a top contender in the middle weight division, he would struggle with a Munoz or Sonnen, but I think he would dominate a fight with Bisping or Stamn.

      • Mike says:

He’s a natural middleweight, and only moved up due to lack of competition. If he ends up in the UFC, I’m sure he’ll return to middleweight just like Shields did to welterweight.

  2. zack says:

he should prolly just stay in dream where he has the belt. hes not gunna beat jon jones ever and is never ever ever gunna beat anderson.

    • Jacob says:

Mousasis striking is legit. It would be interesting to see him fight Anderson.

      • Duane says:

WOW!! You got to be kidding me right? Im guessing your not tho. Gegard has been such a let down in 2011, always talking bout fighting different weight classes etc. Im like dude try to dominate one division first. Dude gets taken down at will, and if your top game is strong, fights over. Not sold on him that’s for sure. Can;’t be up and down in SF then expect to do something in UFC, LOL NOT!!

        • zack says:

gegards striking is no where near andersons. as i said he should stay in dream and keep dreaming about the ufc

        • Jacob says:

I said his striking is legit. I’m not in anyway ironic with that statement so no, I’m not kidding you.
His only loss in Strikeforce was against King Mo, one of the most decorated wrestlers in America. And he’s 205.
After seeing Chael Sonnen toy around with Anderson for 5 rounds I’m also pretty convinced that King Mo vs Anderson would be just as brutal.

And let’s say your right about Gegards bottom game being sucky, I truly don’t belive that Anderson would shoot on him.

  3. GET RID OF FITCH says:

I would like to see Mousasi vs Mike Kyle before strikeforce folds up for good

  4. Voicein the desert says:

His style is best suited for Japan and for K1. Mousasi would get killed in the UFC LHW and HW. He would survive brutal beatings from the top 10 at MW.

I do believe I would be interested to see him fight Leben, Stann, Wanderlei or Santiago. Those could be fun fights. Well…may be not for Mous but…

    • Michael says:

respect your opinion but I sincerely believe Mousasi would destroy Leben , Stann, Wandy and Santiago

      • Brandon says:

I 100% agree. I see Mousasi destroying Leben, Stann, Santiago, Wanderlei.
If you think he can’t, then it’s pretty obvious that you just got into MMA.

  5. Fuckyou says:

No ground game???? He has a great ground game just doesnt have good take down defense……if he had no ground game then King Mo would have been able to do more than just and in his gaurd…and Jardine couldnt hold him down at all

  6. Fortyb4five says:

I’d like to see Gegard vs Alexander Gustafsson or w/e his name is.

  7. Xaninho says:

He has sick submissions and the fight against mo lawal he seemed very sluggish and slow. Not to mention unmotivated….Something strange was going on in that fight.

  8. GET RID OF FITCH says:

Mousasi is about 10 times better than most people comprehend. yes he seems bored or un motivated fighting i strikeforce but make no mistake he is one bad mo fo. Also Mousasi is a natural 185er who always fights at higher weight classes looking for bigger names and better competition. I think Mousasi would give Andersen Silva one hell of a fight at 185
