Frankie Edgar Moves To The Featherweight Division And Is Willing To Face Anyone | UFC News
By Jamie McAllister
Former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar is heading to the Featherweight division. The news was first reported on Tuesday night’s episode of UFC Tonight on FUEL TV.
Edgar (14-3-1) is coming off a controversial loss at UFC 150 against UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson. This was his second loss on the bounce after losing another tight decision to Ben Henderson back at UFC 144 in Japan. Following the loss at UFC 144 UFC President Dana White wanted Edgar to make the move to featherweight offering him and immediate title shot however Edgar was successful in negotiating another shot at the lightweight belt.
Edgar stated he is willing to fight anyone in the division and will take whoever the UFC matches him with. At the UFC 150 post-fight press conference Dana White announced that Edgar would have to win at least once in the division before receiving a title shot.
The current UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is set defend his title against Erik Koch at UFC 153 on Oct. 13. However he recently commented on Edgar and stated he would welcome the former champion so he could then send him packing back to lightweight or to the bantamweight division.

I think Frankie should stay in my mind he beat Bendo twice.
you mean he lost to bendo twice….
No…the first was very controversial and I don’t care how old this gets or if people are tired of hearing this I don’t give a F—,Frankie got robbed in their second meeting.
Still lost so get over it
Frankie Edgar got robbed in the second fight? Kinda like bj penn got robbed in the first fight with Frankie. Yeah I was glad to see Edgar lose twice. Bj penn is still the best
Frankie is a class act, BJ is my favorite but I could see how they gave Bendo the 1st but Frankie def won the 2nd. BJ didn’t get robbed in the 2nd against Frankie…
Just like BJ got robbed the 1st fight with frankie
Welcome to the club franky boy
Its only controversial if one person clearly won, in the rematch neither of them were clear winners so the decision was 50/50 so quit ****ig bitching you frankie edgar nut riders
you are absolutely right, he got robbed both times but the second time was wasnt even close. frankie won both fights
1st of all frankie don’t fight.. he runs around like he’s sparring.. he don’t go for the finish.. the maynard ko was a fluke… Speakin of maynard the ref shoulda stopped the fight when maynard dropped frankie 4 times in rd one and shouldn’t even been the champ anymore… the trackstar edgar is hot garbage.. can’t wait for aldo to smash him
Chad Mendes or Dustin Porier would be awesome opponents.
best of luck.. should be interesting!
give him mendes, if he wins, then aldo
Now i like frankie again!
Is it just me or is frankie edgar the same exact fighter as mendes. Same skill set and almost identical body type. I think he’s more suited in this division maybe even bantamweight. Let all them larger lightweights duke it out for bendo’s belt. Still have nate and donald cerrone in line for that belt. Good call frankie.
Nah, Frankie is much more well-rounded. He has faster hands and footwork. But it would be a great fight.
Give him the Korean Zombie, this would be an interesting matchup and the winner gets Aldo/Koch
^This would be awesome.
YES FIGHT ZOMBIE!!
Glad to see him there. I’ve always liked this guy. I think he is a tough fighter and willing to fight anyone. Pretty down to earth blue collar guy also. The belt didn’t go to his head. I hope he does well.
i cant speak for the rest of you guys, but i am not the least bit interested in seeing erik koch fight the 145 GOAT. while his career is a astonishing 13-1 he was defeated by Chad Mendes via unanimous decision on March 6, 2010 at WEC 47, and we all know what Jose Aldo did to “Money” Mendes… i have no idea why this guy is getting to fight also.
Different skill sets make different fights, that sort of mma math just doesn’t work.
Sad to see you leave the LW div, you won that fight against Henderson IMO. Uncle Dana finally got his way! Won’t be long before you got that 45 belt wrapped around your waist, good luck to you Frankie!
PS: **** all the haters!
I’m a big Edgar fan but common he has to beat Aldo to get the belt, Aldo can pretty much **** any fighter in the lower weight classes
Aldo is the better fighter in every aspect of the game. Better stand-up, one of the best at defending takedowns and if it goes to the ground his BJJ is also better.
I just don’t see how Frankie Edgar can win this. Not to hate on Edgar, but Aldo is just too good.
I wish him good luck.
Now the new road map for BJ Penn : After destroying Rory McDonalds, moving back to lightweight and claiming the title because Frankie “the actor stealing decisions fighter” won’t be around anymore
I dont think Frankie should be able to come down take 1 fight and if he wins get a title shot. I think he needs a couple wins before getting a shot. He got his chance before the Bendo rematch to drop down and get a title shot but he begged for a rematch. He got his rematch and lost, now i think he is going to a new division, he has to work his way up to a title fight. Atleast 2 wins before a title fight! Basically, should be the same way Dana is making Sonnen do it.
korean zombie vs edgar! make it happen
Edgar vs Mendes!!
If he gets a shot at Aldo he will get pooped on like he’s standing under a flock of birds
LOL!
Frankie got screwed the first fight, which was close, and I would understand a draw, but everyone knows how easy it was to see that Frankie won the second time. He’s still and always will be the Lightweight champ until someone beats him. And I mean actually beats him. Bendo is a bum fighter and I can’t stand him now. He should at least be honest instead of lying to himself and us when he knew he lost. Frankie’s going to reign in a new division now until he gets screwed again and ultimately quits, but he will be champion in his new division.
Personally I am not interested in seeing Frankie Edgar pitterpat punch his way through another fight and win it because ‘he has heart’
In my opinion, Henderson decisively beat him twice, the 2nd fight was easily 4:1 to Henderson … EASILY
If Edgar is to fight on, let him go against Gray Maynard again, they’re both boring as hell
I’m not a big Frankie Edgar fan, but I hope he captures the featherweight title. We need more Americans to represent the belt…
you have to be a hater to not like frankie
Edgar is going to be the 3rd person to win a belt in two different weight classes and the first to be a 3x champ in 3 different weight classes. Class act, tough as nails, and I hope he comes back stronger after that bs decision.
Beast!
It’s not a big deal for me at all. I think there will be a lot of exciting fights for Frankie at 145. It’s good for him. Now he won a controversial decision over BJ in the 1ST FIGHT in Abu Dhabi, he got a controversial draw against Maynard in the 1st fight, AND he lost a decision to Bendo twice. I have it as they split the series; nevertheless, Frankie Edgar tries to take all of his fights to the score cards, so it’s the life he chooses for himself. I agree he won the 2nd fight against Ben, but not the 1st fight, and not the 1st fight with BJ. The 1st Maynard fight was questionable as well. It’s not a big deal for me at all. He wasn’t going to last at 155 anway. It was only a matter of time for his legs to give out and he would have to actually stand and fight instead of running.
Aldo is taking this kids wheels off he aint going nowhere in this fight.Aldo all day.
I get sick of people saying Edgar beat Henderson. Compustats gave the fight to Henderson unanimously. I dunno what fight everyone was watching, but Edgar clearly lost in my book.
