Frank Mir Planning On Standing With Dos Santos

Frank Mir has been counted out of his upcoming fight with Junior Dos Santos before the fight even starts. Here, Frank describes a small part of his game plan in that, he actually plans to stand with arguably the best striker in the division. Sure, Every fight starts feet but working it into your strategy when such fights against Shane Carwin and Minotauro Nogueira saw Frank get rocked by fighters with less speed and technique than Dos Santos.
Either way, Mir wants his title back and he will do whatever it takes to get it back. Yes, I did question his strategy but remember this, Frank is a very intelligent human being who knows what hes doing in the Octagon.
This will be a classic heavyweight title fight that won’t soon be forgotten. Style versus style to declare the baddest man on the planet.

“I’m going to go ahead and strike with him, probably more than Carwin wanted to and some of these other guys and try to lull him into lowering his striking defense. If I get him into a rhythm where it’s a boxing match, it will be easier to shoot or take him down. If you are shooting right of the bat and are grabbing a leg and that person’s waiting for it, it’s like any combat tactic. It’s very easy to stop what you are expecting.”

Nighty nite, keep your butthole tight Franky boy…

  2. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Can’t argue with his strategy but he doesn’t have the chin for this.

    • Dinglenuts Magee says:

I think it is less about chin and more about movement.

If he keeps his head moving, uses kicks and that awkward lefty style of his to avoid the big shot, he may be ok.

He got caught by Nog because he was willing to stay in the pocket, having TKOed him already, if he is smart he will know better than to try that with JDS. Carwin got him in the clinch, and I don’t think that JDS is as dangerous there, Cariwn just hits like a truck and was very heavy and muscular, Mir will have the size edge over JDS, different fight.

      (still a longshot though)

      • Sean McCorkle says:

You do bring up a good point. However, Mir is going to come in on the heavy side like he did for his last fight. That move alone will be the end of him. At that weight he is too slow to stay in the pocket. I mean he was practically knocked out by big Nog

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I don’t think he has good head movement. Compared to Randy and Big Nog… Mir comes in last when it comes to older hw fighters having good movement. He’s also a slow striker. If he’s been working on his conditioning…. Not saying Dan Hardy is sufficient, he might last longer than the first if he’s picked apart on the feet. If you do MMA math… JDS couldn’t KO Cro Cop and Mir did… Maybe that does mean he hits harder than JDS but based on the Primetime show it seems like JDS paces himself in his fights. So… All of this means nothing till fight night.

        • david says:

yeah but the cro cop mir fight was so horrible, it took him almost the whole fight to ko him with a knee. It was the only fight that knight with a ko and Mir still didnt get the bonus. Mir doesnt hit harder the JDS, you cant compare knee to fist

        • biglur22 says:

he didn’t ko crocop just made him quit

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I think he broke his orbital against JDS. I’d submit too.

        • James says:

That was karma for Bob Sapp.

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I wish Bob Sapp’s professional can career would ride off into the sunset. I think he’s had 3 or 4 fights this years ending in “TKO” (curling into a ball) in the 1st round this year.

        • James says:

I think I saw his last fight. It was hard to watch. He went up against some ridiculously out of shape looking guy who proceeded to very briefly whoop on Sapp till he did exactly what you described. It was so bad that I began to wonder if I could beat Bob.

      • Klemmer says:

Ya Magee is definitly right it’ll come down to movement and alternating strikes and circling away from JDS power cuz any fighter will go down from a big shot by dos Santos but ppl underestimate Mirs grappling ability he is one of the top 5 grapplers in the division so if he can take it there he has a good chance to submit JDS but JDS is no slouch on the mat either and has excellent takedown defense I have a strong feeling JDS will defend his title but as we all kno any fight can go either way and frank Mir is comin to fight his fight so it’ll be a good match overall

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I think it might come down to who is hungrier. JDS is a younger guy still in his 20s despite his hairline and Mir seems pretty content in his family life and has already held the belt. I really want to see JDS’ ground game…. Speculation sucks.

  3. RFK says:

Damn I like Mir he has showed that he can hang with the top of the UFC for years and is a two time champ that is the only man to finish big nog but thinking about standing with JR for even 60 secs is a death sentence he is still a great fighter but might not hold that strap again of he does get lucky use won’t be able to keep it long with the HW div becoming stacked with new blood

    • Dinglenuts Magee says:

you say that as though taking JDS down is an easy thing to do.

Mir is just saying he wants to use his striking, which is decent, to set up the takedown.

It is the best strategy available.

      • Kaptain says:

Agreed. Mir has to know he has to be careful standing with Cigano, but he can’t telegraph his shots. He wants Junior to be wary of the shot as the fight begins and get comfortable when Mir doesn’t shoot. I’m sure Mir has a few special combos that he feels he can land, and once he does Junior will get frustrated and settle in the boxing game… that’s when he gets taken down.

Agreed it’s a long shot but if he can manage to land a good combo or two he has a chance to distract JDS and land a takedown. Wishful thinking but unfortunately I have JDS by TKO round 2.

  4. Not You says:

We will have to wait and see if he can trade long enough to get Junior comfy. But it won’t be smart to let Junior work into a rhythm where he’s throwing heavy combos.

  5. maurice says:

my numba 1 fav current fighter is jds, until BJ returns that is. jds by first round tko. the only way this fight goes more then 1 round is if jds decides to put on a show and just brutalize mir for a few rounds. lets be real, mir doesnt have a chin, doesnt have much of a gas tank, and doesnt have a single or double leg. his best work comes on the ground. and his best takedowns seem to be slick lil trips, which wont work on jds. he doesnt have the power or boxing advantage to pressure jds, or set anything up. imo opinion mirs only chance is to literally jump for a armbar or drop for a leg. jds wins as soon as his hangs start swining a mir chin.

  6. Ly-er says:

Mir’s game plan makes some sense, but yah standing w/ JDS at any point is a scary position! I just hope he can cover up the best he can, implement sum leg kicks to maybe slow down JDS mobility, & just shoot for those take downs like his life depended on it! The longer he stands, the closer he gets to being unconscious!

  7. Pijan says:

I was always a Frank fan, and up until his loss to Brock, I would have thought he could beat anyone. He might get lucky against JDS but I don’t see him having much of a chance.

  8. Jujutsu Player says:

If he tries to stand and bang he will get KTFO. He doesn’t have the chin for it.

    • Thom says:

It’s not just the chin, JDS can knock anyone out, it’s his overall striking defense that’s lacking… His offense is fine though.

      • Jujutsu Player says:

Your right, JDS hits like a truck and could knock anyone out. I really rate Mir but I can’t see him lasting long if he tries to stand and trade. His best chance is getting to the ground and scrabbling for position. His BJJ skills edge JDS. looking forward to the card, recent events have missed good HW bouts.

  9. CanILive says:

    wow lol

  10. EBM FTW says:

I don’t think he’s serious. He’s a smart guy; I think he’s doing this in an attempt to set JDS off. He will rather try to clinch up and pull guard. JDS isn’t really known as a GnP-expert, so Mir should be safe in guard position.

  11. Logan says:

I think this is a very interesting match up. I feel unquestionably JDS wins it on the feet. I feel like this is the biggest question. Can Mir get the fight to the ground and keep it there? If he does I have no doubts he wins the fight. I mean, yes, JDS trains BJJ with Nogiera and he may very well be a brown or black belt but it will not compare to the mastery that Mir has attained. I think single or double legs are going to be too easily stuffed by JDS so I think Mir is gonna look to strike to clinch and go for some judo throws or Greco trips. In terms of striking i think JDS has to throw combo heavy and dont let Mir relax and on Mir’s end I think he has to mix in leg kick, i say try the Hendo combo, inside left leg kick overhand right. Going to be an interesting fight. Bottom line Striking battle JDS keeps his belt. JiuJitsu match and we’ve got a new and 3rd time Champ in Mir.

  12. jbeamazing says:

His chin is weak but in the carwin fight carwin wanted nothing to do with standing with frank so he put him on the cage he destroyed nog in the first fight standing he got cliped in the second but any HW can land a shot that can put you on your ass even shawn mccorkle can lol Franks best chance is his Muay Thai them knees in the clinch are crazy go ask mirko cro cop and roy nelson

  13. A.James says:

    JDS wins… Flawless Victory… Fatality!

  14. DMAC says:

Not falling for all this hype coming out Mirs mouth or any fighter for that matter. But on the flip side I got to cut Mir some slack he never puts on a boring fights.

  15. lex walker says:

Frank knows damn well he’s not going to stand with jds

  16. HaVaginaButts says:

This article is ignoring the fact that Frank can attempt to use the media to plant false strategy into JDS’s head.

  17. Abraham says:

Nighty night frank mir. I dont think frank Mir is good as he talks himself to be.

  18. Brend0magic says:

Like someone said, the strategy is good, but he doesn’t have the chin for it.

  19. Xaninho says:

Seems like Mir is also a stand-up comedian?

  20. hahahah says:

so he wants to retire early, hahahahahahaha…

  21. Big Show says:

Mir doesnt have the Chin to get into an Stand Up war against JDS…

  22. MARV3L0US says:

Very tough fight for mir not only does junior have excellent take down defense and good look keeping him down if you do get him down he is good in the clinch too he can land some good uppercuts and knees. And striking wise mir has heavy hands if he lands can’t wait for the fight. DOS SANTOS ALL THE WAY

  23. Yari says:

Frank has been using the media far too often for anyone to still believe this nonsense. He has no intentions of standing with JDS any second longer than he has to.

  24. kyle iampen says:

    He’s a dead man

  25. Coco says:

All you licking JDS crack lol
Nobody like the underdogs but I do
You go Mir and Fuck him upp

  26. Johnny says:

Mir has to remember that if they do end up on the ground JDS is also quite skilled in his ground game

  27. the original steve says:

alright its one thing to try to prove a point but that is just stupid.

  28. Pete A. says:

    Frank Mir by knockout!

    Ha…who am I kidding.

  29. jason says:

I’m gonna be the only one to say mirs got this…people are seeming to forget how good his striking actually is. Yes jds has the best boxing in the division but that doesn’t mean mir can’t hang….the only person of mirs striking quality that dos santos has fought was cain and I still say that was a fluke. Not that jds one just how quickly he did. If jds connects w one of his big combos yes mirs in trouble but I really see mir using solid footwork and good head movement with his awkward southpaw style to keep junior guessing and missing. After he dots jds up a couple times doing that and has him worried the takedown and sub will come. That’s if mir doest tag and stun junior first…anyone who thinks that can’t happen or is counting mir out of this is sorely mistaken. Not a sure thing as nothing in mma is but I have mir sub in 3

  30. Leo From New Jersey says:

LOOK THE BOTTOM LINE IS HE IS TRYING TO GET HIS LIL CONFIDENCE SO THAT WHEN HIS OVER CONFIDENT SELF GETS KTFO END OF STORY HE WILL LOSE AND HE WILL LOSE WAKING UP THATS IT NO FOOT WORK NOT TATICS WILL MAKE HIS GLASS CHIN ANY BETTER HE GETS HIS ONCE THATS IT ITS OVER END OF STORY GODDAM

  31. Darren says:

I actually think Mir has no intention to stand with JDS but probably realizes that a takedown isn’t gong to be easy and is trying to appear as if this is what he wants. He is too smart not to realize that standing with JDS is a death sentence. He wants a takedown bad but also doesn’t want JDS to know he is afraid to stand. He should be afraid to stand and if I were him I would be working on pulling guard.

    • FearMir says:

Frank Mir likes to take the Gsp gameplan to a fight. He is not as good as Gsp in terms of takedowns but he wants to strike just enough with you to the point where you think it’s a slug fest then all of the sudden he shoots. That’s more of the gameplan he is talking about

      • Numba1Ghani says:

I’ve always enjoy watching Frank Mir fight but remembering how he got completely manhandled and obliterated by Carwin in like 4 min then remembering how JDS mollested Carwin for 15 min straight puts into perspective the athletic difference between the 2. Mir can still tap JDS if it hits the ground but I don’t think his chin has what it takes to absorb JDS’ one hitter quitter

  32. Michael says:

I think Frank should hurt himself in practice and not show up. On the other hand I know he’ll show up. Its his last chance. He’ll stand because he has to. And it will be a short night for him. Have enjoyed your fighting, but its time to hang em up.

    • GRT 3000 says:

He just busted Nog’s arm in half & now he’s challenging for the Heaveyweight title…with three consecutive wins in the UFC I’d hardly say it’s time to hang em’ up.

  33. Mike McMack says:

If Mir stand with JDS he’s going to get KTFO! Frank is a smart guy so I’m guessing that much of his striking is going to be of the Muay Thai base to keep distance. Leg kicks are great but they leave a person open and with JDS you don’t want to leave openings. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of strategy Frank uses when they do actually fight.

  34. jones says:

every fight start feet ???? if you are shooting right of the bat?? man serious i am terrible at grammer and can still do better…anyways,,frank will get ktfo in the first…he hasa no chance in trying stand an he has shit takedowns…this will be bad night fot mirr

    • Paul Harris says:

He has decent takedowns if its timed right. Still though, frank can’t hang with JDS speed. Plus his sprawl is deadly. No deals for Mir on this one. He’s gonna get knocked out

  35. J says:

Lmao hey go ahead an try to box with him Frank it’s your funeral

  36. Bjj BB says:

Styles make fights, so we will just have to wait and see how this goes down.

  37. Alex Daas says:

Frank should never have taken this fight, this is not goin to end well for him.

  38. Mike says:

Frank Mir will win this fight by knocking out JDS in the second round.

  39. KIDD433 says:

    LMFAO! I AGREE.
