Frank Mir Injured: Out of His Bout with Daniel Cormier

And the hits just keep on coming! It has been a real rough month for UFC President Dana White as well as for the fans. For the third time in less than four weeks a main event has lost one of its participants.

MMA Junkie broke word last night that Frank Mir’s Strikeforce debut has gone up in smoke due to an undisclosed knee injury that will keep him out of his match-up with Daniel Cormier. The two were scheduled to meet on November 3 in Oklahoma.

Mir’s appearance in the Strikeforce Hexagon was to be the first time a UFC Fighter would make an appearance on Showtime since Zuffa purchased the San Jose based organization last year. Fans were presently surprised when the announcement was made, but now the carpet has been pulled right out from under them.

Cormier was not only looking forward to testing himself against the former UFC Heavyweight Champion, he was also excited about fighting in Oklahoma. The Strikeforce Grand Prix Heavyweight Champion starred at Oklahoma State University and then went on to compete internationally.

It is not known whether the UFC/Strikeforce will look for another suitable opponent or will remove Cormier from this event altogether. Tim Sylvia had been discussed before Mir agreed to take the fight, but it’s highly unlikely Zuffa would go that route after Sylvia’s performance against Andrei Arlovski at a One FC event a few weeks ago.

Mir’s injury comes on the heels of Dan Henderson’s knee injury which forced his removal from the UFC 151 main event in which he was set to face current UFC 205lb. champion Jon Jones. UFC 153 lost both of its original main event fighters when Erik Koch suffered a knee injury. Frankie Edgar stepped in to face Jose Aldo in his featherweight debut, but that bout was scrapped after Aldo suffered a foot injury in a motorcycle accident.

This is crazy man,I’ve been watching the UFC since 99 and never seen them struggle this much.this is by far their worst year I think.i think the ufc’s best years were 2007 and 2011,in my opinion.maybe they should give arlovski a shot,I don’t know?how about josh barrnett LOL,u know that’s not happening.im even running out of ideas. This sucks.

    • Shawn says:

That’s because back in the day, guys would fight even injured. Nowadays, guys worry about even small injuries, because it may shorten their careers. There’s some viable truth to that. But at the same time, there’s some guys from the old days that are still fighting strong. Also, with insurance being paid for by the UFC, it becomes easier for fighters to say they can’t fight. They don’t have to pay for rehab or surgery. So don’t need to fight to make money for that.

  3. Ryan Prieur says:

I think the UFC is having to manny events a year! When a fighter gets hurt they can’t find a replacement because most of the top fighters have an other fight coming up. I do love watching UFC but they are having an insane amount of shows this last year. Some of the “part time” fans are loosing interest due to some shitty cards and replacement fighters are all booked up. I say go back to having one event a month and make it a spectacular one.

i think the UFC is having to manny events a year as of late. don’t get me wrong i do love watching them, but if someone gets hurt, most of the suitable replacements are already booked up. Also some of the “part time” fans are loosing interest due to shitty cards just getting thrown together. i think they should go back to only having one event a month or so and make every card spectacular. that would give more time to hype events plus if you have to wait a little bit your going to be really exited about the next card. there was a month the UFC had a card once a week, and most the people i know didn’t care to watch most of them because they were lame cards. Abcense makes the heart grow fonder

    • BX81 says:

I agree. You’re asking these fighters to pick up the pace in training so this is what you can expect.

      • Fenner says:

Look. all these shows is what pays the up and coming guys. they need to have. If it was once a month MMA would die. Fans should just stop bitching and enjoy the hard working athletes stepping in there for your “amusement”!

  5. Ryan Prieur says:

  6. T.DADDY says:

  15. Rich says:

  16. Ddddddd says:

    Oh I don’t know, maybe,employ some more fighters?$

  17. GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

Mir dodged a BULLET bigtime. That Cormier fight was a horrible matchup for him and with Mir already coming off a loss i think that would have been a huge setback to his career. Do I think Mir used the “NEW” best excuse for fighters to get out of bad matchups that they probably never wanted in first place but wanted to save face with Joe Silva and Dana white as well as they know the fans always seem to find out who doesn’t accept fights (machida-Jones , Shogun Jones etc) Dana likes to DEMOTE fighters for turning down fights (EXCEPT Bisping of course) when he refuxed to fight Vitor) Mir aint stupid he did the right thing and didn’t wait to long and put the UFC -strikeforce in bad situation.
