Can anybody tell me how long it should take to get a BJJ blue belt? I've been doing BJJ and Shuto on and off for 7 years and I have beaten some blue belts and other people interested in it. Because of lack of funds and family committments I can't attend classes and when there are classes it isn't long before classes are cut due to lack of support for the people who have the qualifications and belts to grade me. I've had countless backyard brawls and rolls with people from all sorts of Martial Arts, tapping people sometimes only using my BJJ skills. I've had a couple of MMA ring fights and amateur boxing belts as well. Any help and advice about obtaining a belt would be appreciated.

Belts are just belts, brotha. Work on getting better and forget rank. Carlson Gracie Sr. used to teach classes wearing a blue belt.

It depends on your instructor and school. I'm a white belt and I've trained consistently 2-6x a week for three years. After about a year of training I was occasionally catching blues and some purples in training. This was all giless. After training for about 14months I was able to train at a bjj school (gi) for a little over the month. After about week of training I was one of the the more dominate white belts among the two schools I trained at under that team. I was also very competitive with all the blues regardless of weight. i took a 3month hiatus and went back to my original nogi team. I'm a 3year whitebelt, alternate instructor that subs for my blackbelt instructor teaching mostly whites, blues, and purples. Should I be a blue belt?

I'd say if I trained at Gracie Barra, Renzos, or Torrance I'd probably have gotten my blue two years ago. Those schools are highly structured and have a curricullum in place to help students progress. Other instructors don't really have a set perspective of what each belt level represents.

Been training for about a Year, 3 days a week, 2 hour classes. I'm a white belt with stripes. Blue belt seems to be a level where your get comfortable rolling and going from transition to transition IMO. I still feel a little unconformable
but I've definitely seen progress.

Also, I think if your professor doesn't hand out belts regularly IMO its good, there are too many people handing belts to guys that are not up to the level. I have nothing but respect for a professor that promotes based on skill, experience, and technique execution.
