Forrest Griffin Hints That Retirement Is Near | UFC NEWS

By Jonathan Kirschner

Earlier in June, Forrest Griffin mentioned that he would retire from life if he loses to Tito Ortiz in their rubber-match. Always one to joke, Griffin is also known for being very “matter of fact”, giving blunt and honest answers. In a recent interview with ESPN, Griffin addressed how much longer he sees himself fighting at a top-level for and how he wants to go.

ESPN.com: Everybody is talking about his future, what’s yours? How much longer you plan on doing this?

Griffin: I don’t know. It’s not going to be a long time. I don’t foresee the huge comeback. I worked out with that (Alexander) Gustafsson kid. Young guys, man. I’m old now. I like what Rich Franklin has done, there’s still a lot of guys I can beat — but I don’t know how many of those guys are in the Top 10. I’m still, I’d say, one of the Top 25 guys in the world at 205 pounds; problem is I keep fighting the top 5-to-10 guys in the world.

ESPN.com: Does it matter to you how you go out? Does it matter if you go out, losing five of your last six or whatever?

Griffin: Yeah. You’ve tarnished yourself. You should have quit while you were breaking even, which is kind of where I’m at now. Thing about Tito’s losses, if I’m fighting that level of guys, I don’t know if I’m losing six in a row but I might go 2-4. If you’re fighting great guys, you’re fighting great guys. It depends on the opponent.

Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz will be meeting in the octagon for the final time at UFC 148 on July 7, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout is the third between the two with each fighter holding a victory over the other. This is also being labeled as Tito Ortiz’s retirement fight.

    • Jujitsu Player says:

Ditto, one of my favorite fighters ever and the funniest guy ever in MMA…Not the most talented guy but has one of the biggest hearts and gives it 100%. Hope he bows out with a win.

Yep Frank Mir actaully broke news on another MMA website about year ago that Forrest was having serious health problems due to punishment he has taken over the years and he was going to have to retire within a year or so and was being monitered very closely by UFC doctors. This is sad but true and another fighter who has taken even more damage than forrest at same pint in theri careers is Frankie Edgar and its only matter time (4 yearsmax IMO) that Frankie will be at same place forrest is now with his health from all teh brain trauma. NOONE is more concerned than Dana white regarding Frankies countless concussions. Whats going on with Forrest is a sneak peak of what we all will see as REALITY in about 5 years and its going to be quite sad to say the least. Mark my words all the unified MMA rules are going to be changed BIGTIME within next 5 years or less where we will no longer see elbows, Knees, maybe even kicks to the head will be a thing of the past. Fights will be stopped at first sign of a fighter taking any kind of damage. For example both maynard Frankie 2 and 3 fights with new rules coming would have for sure been stopped well before Frankies barin trauma of 5 knockdowns in first round. Yep its coming and whats even more sad the politicians who will beFORCING these changes will be pointing at fighters like Forrest to show what damage MMA causes and we all know Forrest fight with Bonnar was the fight on spike that basically help launch the UFC. amazing how things come full circle huh? Th ekid with biggest heart Frankie Edgar is going to be a brain dead vegy in less than 5-10 years which is beyond sad

      • jones says:

fitch hater…thats y frankie needs to drop to 145 and hang with guys his own size…dana will force him if he does not win this rematch…and the forrest damage, forrest took most of his serious damage befor he even got into the ufc…he was fighting in circus ass shows and taking a beating sometimes,,,he fought in the same shows that let jeremy horn fight every weekend..jeremy an forrest fought actually… i dont think the rules will change ever for the mma..cuz muy thai is legal ith kicks n knees and boxers take far far more trauma to the brain with the bigger gloves and 100,s of hits.

      • Keep Fitch (Forever) says:

Hey you get rid of fitch faggot. I would stick my boot so far up your ass you would feel like you been fucked by a train.

  4. Yo Papi says:

I liked Forrest until I seen how he acted after the Silva fight, it even seemed fixed. Then how he Fitched Franklin, I lost all respect

  5. Wrestlingdoesntrule says:

Get rid of Fitch forever, get off the drugs dude. Stop acting like you have all these inside secrets. First off, modern day mma events have been frequently happening for at least 15 years. These guys are no different than boxers, in fact, they are better off than boxers because they aren’t taking repeated head shots. This brain dead/veggie thing that you are talking about is nonsense. For sure, there are definitely fights that have happened where the refs haven’t stopped the fights when they should have but that’s not the rules of mma that failed, that’s the uneducated refs fault for not protecting the fighter. If Franklin and Edgar were having serious health problems, there is no way the UFC would risk putting them in fights and risk something bad happening to them. The UFC is so image conscious anymore it’s ridiculous. That’s just my view on it. By the way, I like your stance on Fitch. I boycott all his fights.

    • GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

No secrets just my prediction that things will change after fighters like Forrest and a few years later Frankie will be vegys. No inside info just me knwing how things work and I find it funny you buy into that carp Dana sells when he says MMA is safer than boxing. Dude I train twice a week with pillows on my hands and there is no way in hell boxing is more dangerous than MMA. Knees alone make MMA 10 times more dangerous. we don’t even need to talk about elbows and 4oz gloves and superkicks to head.

EVERYONE knows Forrest had already taken 80% of his MASSIVE brain trauma before the UFC when he was fighting for $100 a nite but what you are too simple minded to REALIZE is do you think all the John McCain type politicians out there that have more power that you could comprehend in a million years give a rats ass where he got his brains pounded in. Sorry in REAL world they go after the biggest or deepest pockets and in MMA world that is the UFC. I can already see and hear Dana white telling these guys to fuck off which will only make things worse and speed up process to competely dummy up the sport and turn it into more lay n pray, wall n stall, Greg jackson ***** ass track meets. HOWEVER i’m sure Dana already has plans to PAY forrest, Wandy and Edgar millions to stay the hell away from any cameras or radio interviews ie: send them out to pasture as quiet as possible so they don’t show what happens to an MMA fighter in 10 or less years of getting brains kicked in. Look how good already Dana has covered up Forrest condition of beginning stages of parkinsons. 100% TRUE Story Forrest has Parkinsons at 34 years old. we are talking about a 240lb guy who can take a massive amount of punishment just wait tell EDgar is 34 ist going to be the first real high profile fighter to go down and have to retire way way earlier than most people ever thought unless you have ever researched what concussions do to brain and how much worse it is to receive say 5 concussions back to back to back within 5 minutes like Frankie did in Maynard fights. Reason boxing is so much safer for example is when Frankie was dropped they maybe would have let him continue after first kncokdown but never in million years after 3rd, 4th, 5th. Concussions are accumlitive and NOONE in MMA has been hit harder than Frankie Edgar P4p anyway. Maynards punch was tested on fight science and he hitsmas harda s moist HW and even hit harder than a bunch of 300lb NFL lineman. Frankie unbelievable heart sadly enough I predict will result in the demise of his brain. Do I pray I’m wrong? without question but I’m not and its only a matter of time just with the brain trauma in maynard fights alone this isn’t counting what Ben Hendesern has already done and will have done after their next fight.

Ur a.nerd who pays too much attention to mabeys. Don’t respond to this, just digest it and get off this site.

      • chris says:

Your right about Edgar, he isn’t going to be around very long at all. But your bugging if you think there going to take everything out for safety Lol and because of a few guys like forrest. And yes boxing is more dangerous then MMA. To be honest football is more dangerous then MMA in ways. But its pretty simple if you think about it, in MMA the amount of punishment you take to your head is not half of what it is in boxing. And yeah a head kick or a knee are going to be bad, but how many times do you see a guy continualy get kicked or.kneed in a fight without him.gettin finished? In boxing even if your winning unless your as good as mayweather your still taking countless clean blows to your head. Not to mention MMA striking is still on sub a low level compared to boxing or kickboxing

      • Blah says:

FITCH FAG.YOU ARE FUKIN DUMB BRO.DONT MATTER THE SIZE OF THE GUYYOU SAY THAT P4P EDGER TOOK MOPST DAMAGE,LIK IT MATTERS THE SIZE IF THE BODY TAAKING THE PUNCH.A 265 GUY AND 155 GUY BRAIN HAS THE SAME AMOUNT PROTECTION. SO IT ANYONE IS IN DANGER OF BRAIN PROBLEMS IT WOULD BE ROY NELSON HE HAS TAIN THE BIGGEST SHOTS AND STAYED IN THERE. AN YOUR FUCKIN DUMB SHIT PARKINSONS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FIGHTING.ALI WOULD HAVE THAT SHIT EVEN IF HE DID NOT BOX,THATS A PROVEN FACT.YOUR A TOTAL FOOL MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE,U JUST HAVE SAD LIFE THINKING ABOUIT ALL YOUR MAYBES

      • Blah says:

OHH AND YOU A TOTAL LIAR FITCH BOY ,I DONT KNWO WHO THE HELL YOUR LISTEN TO OR WHERE YOU DREAM THIS STUFF UP BUT GRIFFIN HAS NO PARKINSON SHIT AND DANA WOULD NEVER LET HIM FIGHT IF HE DID.IF THAT WAS A GOOD SECRET SOME LOUDMOUTH RANTING FOOL LIKE U WOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT IT.IF U HAVE THE INSIDE SCOOP WHY DID U NOT TELL US AHEAD OF TIME THAT UFC BRAZIL IS CANCELED?? THAT WAS AN SECRET MUCH LIKE THIS FAKE FORREST THING YOU HAVE MUSTERD UP

        • GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

Damn blah i thought someone had down the world a huge favor and snuffed out your sorry ass. I’m not sure who is a bigger loser you or Fitch lover and of course i’m sure you are prob sam eidiot wrestling lover faggot. Fitch lover is ythe biggest ***** to ever walk the earth and he knows it.

  6. Billy says:

I like forest man its good to hear he knows his times up. Not like these guys past there prime thinking there one of the top guys and putting the health at risk.

  7. Zack says:

Good it was time to retire after the silva fight. Forrest is a good fighter he just lost his drive.

  8. some dude says:

Who really cares he hardly ever fights anyway and when he does he doesn’t seem to take it sirius.

  9. The Dirty Sanchez Saloon says:

I love Forrest he is really cool and I enjoy following him on twitter he puts some funny shit. Yet I and I think everyone else will remember him for his earlier days when he was a warrior. But you can see that his drive is not there and his so is his performance. Its good that he is planning his retirement but still sad. I think his last fight should be with Stephen Bonnar after they do a season of TUF as coaches. It would be a full circle for both of them
