Formiga on Jorgensen Finish: “I don’t think it was a head-butt”
While Jussier Formiga was able to return to his winning ways this last Sunday, with a win over Scott Jorgensen, his victory was marred by what appeared to be an illegal headbutt rocking Jorgensen. And while some, including Jorgensen himself, believe that a head–butt directly influenced the outcome of the fight, Formiga claims that there was no head-butt, saying,
“I don’t think it was a head-butt…I moved forward and my head hit his chest and he went down. I took the opportunity and took his back. I wanted to go for a leglock, but I lost the position and went for the neck…I wanted to strike against him, but I don’t know if he slipped or something like that, so went down and got the submission.”
Controversy aside, Formiga has improved to 2-2 in the UFC, with wins over Jorgensen and Chris Cariaso. His losses have come from Joeseph Benavidez and John Dodson, two former title contenders. Formiga believes that the win gives him new-found hope in the division, saying, “A lot of people put a huge pressure on me…When I entered the UFC, they said I’d be the first Brazilian to win the flyweight title, and tonight I proved I’m alive in the division and I can get to the top.”
