Forbes releases Top 100 Highest paid athletes list; no MMA fighters make top 100

In the most recent release of the Forbes top 100 highest paid athletes list there are no MMA fighters on the list of 100 athletes. According to http://www.forbes.com/athletes/list/ with the values calculated as of June 2013 the number one earning athlete is Tiger Woods earning $78.1M, $13.1M from salary/winnings and $65M from endorsements.

There are Golfers, tennis players, football players, baseball players, soccer players, even a Cricket player on the top 100 but no mixed martial artist. Boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are on the list, but again no one from the UFC or any other MMA brand.

So I was thinking well maybe there is something wrong, maybe they don’t add in the extras the fighters get on top of their salary, or they don’t use the fighters cut of the PPV money. I did find a discrepancy but it was from another site.

In the 100th spot on the Forbes list was Samuel Eto’o a soccer player with forbes.com saying he earns $16.4M with $13.4M from salary/earnings and then $3M from endorsements.

So when looking to find out the actual highest earning MMA fighter in the world I found on celebritynetworth.com an article on this very thing, the richest MMA fighters in the world here http://www.celebritynetworth.com/articles/entertainment-articles/richest-mma-fighters-world/

Now according to the story posted on March 17, 2013 where they say they did use all sources of income including PPV bonuses. Their list goes as follows….

  1. B.J. Penn net worth – $20M from (family money, RVCA, gyms, books)
  2. Tito Ortiz net worth – $15M from (clothing line, gym, Jenna Jameson)
  3. Randy Couture net worth – $14M from (Expendables 1-3, gym, clothing line)
  4. Chuck Liddell net worth – $13M from (has highest UFC career earnings @ $4.3M)
  5. Brock Lesnar net worth – $12.5M from (WWE,NFL)

(To see the full list go to the link provided above)

Now to be fair I think the Forbes list is per year earnings, and the celebritynetworth.com list is the fighter’s actual net worth. Either way I’m not sure how accurate any of the information is but it’s what I had to go with. Fighters typically don’t share their dollar amount of income.

The other thing you might find interesting is that according to celebritynetworth.com as well they say UFC President Dana White has a net worth of $150 million.

It’s a relatively new sport. Give it time and as it will hopefully continue to grow the fighters paydays will grow accordingly.
