Firas Zahabi Comments On GSP Hand Wrap Controversy | UFC NEWS

“I was outside when Mike Ricci was fighting. So, right when I came in, I saw Jake Shields waiting at the door, so I said hello to him. I didn’t know what he was doing there, and when I walked into the room they were like ‘Hey, they’re not letting us, they’re interrupting the warm-up.’ I was more than happy to let them check the hand wraps, more than happy. But they told me they already did, Jake had already come in and checked the hand wraps, so I said, ‘You know what, not more than that, because it will never end.'”

“Then it will be checking his cup. Then it will be checking his shorts, then, what else? We’re warming up here, you don’t have infinite time to warm up. We’re going to go through a routine, it’s not going to be interrupted, the commission came in and said ‘Please do check it again.’ The referee came in and checked the gloves and I said ‘You know what, bring NASA, if someone from the NASA office is out there, bring them in and let them check, anybody who wants to check anything, you can have the hand wraps after the fight. You can have the gloves, send them to any laboratory. You want, bring VADA in here right after, before, during, whatever you want.’ But, I don’t want them to call the shots. I don’t want them to tell me when we’re warming up and when we’re not warming up, we’re not going to do that.”

While on this weeks “The MMA Hour” Team Tristar head coach and GSP trainer, Firas Zahabi, commented on the controversy surrounding GSP’s pre-fight hand wrap inspection.

  1. allmightysandman says:

So the reality is that the Gracie camp is whining about cheating…when they were the ones that were trying to disrupt GSP’s warm up by sending Jake “i got nothing going on” shields to harrass the champ! lol

Sounds like the Gracie boys knew their top dog was about to get owned and were desperate.

Diaz is maybe no. 8 or no. 9 in the WW ranks and will make a fine gatekeeper…he deserves no more title shots.

he cried about GSP not wanting to stand with him ahead of the fight, then GSP dominates him on the feet and on the ground…he said he welcomed GSP taking him down cause he’d beat him on the ground…diaz did NOTHING on the ground, GSP shut down his everymove with his superior grappling.

Diaz looked out-classed and really didn’t belong in a title fight.

Now bring on the big rig!

    • Allmightysandman says:

And when I talk about big rig I mean he is so straight vicious. He is like a little Gina. I mean would you just look at him. His Ground in pound is fabulous just look at it. And his left is crazeony just look at it. It’s so cool because he is a little shorty out there knocking turkeys out just look at him.

      • Steven Thurman says:

Im sorry, I dont see Hendricks winning this. He is a top contender, but when he was put up against a superior striker like Condit, his striking just looked sloppy, he looked desperate and was just lunging his left hand out there over and over again, GSP is good at keeping people who strike like that away with his jab. And his grappling is second to none in the Welterweight Division. Plus, when Hendricks took down someone good on the ground, like Condit, we also saw him not able to do anything. GSP unfortunately has that fight, and we’ll continue to see a non finishing, leg humping champ.

        • Allmightysandman says:

That second post was not me…some ***** posing as me. GSP wins all day long.

Not sure why some duche posted as me but no big deal.

  2. UFC 84 Forever says:

Jake Shields clearly eye gauged St-Pierre in their fight, Gil Melendez admitted before 129 that something dirty would be done by Jake Shields…

And this guy thinks he has the right to do this shit? You’re basically cheating and disrupting what he needs to do to be prepared to fight.

Just like Diaz is cheated by skipping out on events to get extra days training, hey news flash jackass everyone misses that time not just you – there isn’t a disadvantage there, in fact you’re gaining an unfair advantage by skipping!

  3. Mattdaddy says:

GSP looked horrible!!! Is this MMA or what? There’s a reason no one liked Fitch’s fights. That was the most boring fight!!!

    • redemeer says:

Are you crazy? He has had plenty of exciting fights, plus it is about winning, what is he supposed to do just stand there with Diaz and get roped into a boxing match he may not win, and yes it is MMA wrestling and grappling are key, do you ever think GSP might not always look good because he is always fighting a number 1 contender? The reason no one liked Fitch is because he has lost 3 fights in a row, plus if these guys fighting GSP are so good how come he dominates them all?

      • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Correction, Fitch beat the shit outta Erick Silva prior to losing to Maia. And I loved the way Fitch fights. Wrestling is the most exciting part of mma.

        • The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Fitch had to fight his way out of a submission several times. He did deserve the win, it wasn’t a one-sided beatdown like you try to make out of it though. In the end it was a great fight, but only because he didn’t wrestle as much.

Wrestling is the most boring part of MMA……. Only wrestlers and dudes who like to see men rubbing crotches on men think it’s exciting.

        • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

He wrestled his ass off, but Silva refused to be dominated and made a fight of it but Fitch beat the crap outta him. Never was Fitch in trouble when Silva had his back. You don’t like wrestling because you don’t understand it. And Dude, have you ever seen BJJ contests??? Now that is gay porn. I take it you love gay pron, I mean BJJ?

      • Dan Jenkins says:

Johnny Hendricks was the number one contender

  4. 123 says:

oh shutup, mma is getting boring with all theese wrestlers holding every1 down & in my opinion GSP has been a boring champion for about 4 years now.. bring Paul Daley back to give Nick Diaz a real fight.

    • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

WTF? bashing wrestling? WTF? It’s the most important aspect of ALL mma!!

      • The Way Of The Dutchman says:

The unified rules of mma are biased and wrestling orientated if that’s what you mean. Not a surprise since Blatnick had such a big influence in creating them…….But in the end wrestling only has some solid useful techniques like takedown and takedown defense. The biggest part is still striking and BJJ. Every fight starts standing up and if it goes to the ground it’s BJJ time. Unless it’s a LnP fest ofcourse.

        • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Without wrestling, you have a K-1 kickboxing tournament…talking about booooring.

  5. Jeremiah says:

St Pierre is the best ever, I just love him!

  6. bam says:

In other words….. Firas was just being an asshole…. Making it seem like there was more to the issue, when jake could of checked them out in 20 sec….. Reason more to hate GSP and his bs camp…

    • Allmightysandman says:

Why is he being an asshole by not letting the opposing camp’s little bitch disturb the champs preparation? The wraps were checked…end of story.

  7. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

GSP fought a smart fight but unfortunately a very safe one. He didn’t go for finishes and chose to stay on top until the end of the round. Too bad.

    • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

He apparently wasn’t feeling very well. He was sick and just wanted to conserve his energy. That makes me like him even more. He’s just smart. Could you have imagined what would of happened to Nick if he was not ill???

  8. Dan Jenkins says:

Even though i think GSP won a UD I was a little disappointed that Diaz couldn’t do anything from his back but avoid punches and elbows. Not making “excuses” but I do wonder how much was ring rust on Nicks part I thought he looked flat myself as did my brother not that it matters you have to beat the man on the day Nick couldn’t. I didn’t think GSP “dominated” the stand up though sure he landed jab after jab and then a superman punch but considering he had Diaz on the ground and did land some g’n’p why was his (GSP) face worse than Diaz, GSP might bruise easy but Nick cuts easy his face especially his eyebrows are covered in scar tissue. So with all them shots GSP landed standing and on the ground he hardly marked Diaz. If it were a pub fight I know which one I’d think was the winner

  9. 123 says:

@gay wrestling.. its important because the ufc is an american company & americans wrestle in college or whatever.. in pride it wasnt as important because you couldnt just hold sum1 down to win a fight.. in my opinion.

  10. Kryptonite says:

I am a huge fan of GSP, but I will also admit that the story of his last 6 fights has been the same and could be considered boring, but I also have read many comments on how Rousey’s armbar finish is getting boring. People also used to complain when Tyson would Knock out opponent after opponent in the first 60 seconds. It would be nice for George to stand more as I believe he has amazing stand up abilty as well.
