EXCLUSIVE | Veronica LoCurto Talks Upcoming Invicta 6 and TUF 18 | Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio

By JAKE CHASTAIN

| Our boys Denny and Anton were at it again this week on Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio and they had an awesome lineup of guest ready to talk MMA. First on the show this week was WMMA competitor and longtime reporter for Women’s MMA Roundup, Veronica LoCurto. Veronica is a BJJ purple belt and is no stranger to the show. She discussed several topics regarding the happenings in WMMA right now such as the upcoming Invicta FC 6 card on July 13th and the upcoming season of TUF, which is being coached by Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. Here are some of the highlights from LoCurto’s interview on Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio:

She first talked with the boys about the upcoming Invicta FC 6 fight card, which is scheduled to take place on July 13th in Kansas City. The card is highly anticipated with many intriguing matchups scattered throughout. LoCurto, when asked about the event, stated, “It’s a super card.” She continued, “We got Cyborg vs. Coenen headlining. I can’t picture there being anymore fireworks than that. They have a history. I think Merlius is the first person to face Cyborg twice.”

LoCurto was then asked which fight she was most looking forward to. She replied by saying, “It’s hard for me to pick just one.”

“I think on the undercard, Rose Namajunas vs. Tecia Torres is going to be crazy.”

“I want to see what they both got on the ground. We know Rose is sick on the ground and then I was just checking her out a little more on the standup and that looks super dangerous too. Strong.”

“You see these lightweight girls, I mean, lighter than lightweight, and they’re generating so much power. It’s awesome to see.”

LoCurto, who was obviously getting excited while talking about the upcoming Invicta event, also talked about some of the other bouts on the card. She continued, “The other fight I’m looking forward to, I think it’s an interesting fight, is Sara D’Alelio vs. Lauren Taylor. You know, they both use to fight at higher weights and um, I want to see what they got for each other.”

She explained that it was hard to pick just one fight to get excited about because many of the matchups on the Invicta 6 card are so intriguing. She went on by saying, “I’ve been impressed in the past with Invicta’s matchmaking.”

“I don’t think there are any unexciting fights on this card.”

The conversation then shifted to a more personal note as LoCurto was asked about the recent news that WMMA and Invicta 6 competitor Bec Hyatt had recent spilt from her ex-husband and how it might affect her upcoming bout with Mizuki Inoue. She answered, “I’d like to say it wouldn’t but you don’t know how people’s personal lives are going to affect them.”

Hyatt will be heading into the July 13th bout following an impressive armbar submission over Jasminka Cive at Invicta 5 in April. That victory followed a strawweight championship loss to Carla Esparza.

LoCurto then talked with the boys at Fist-Ta-Cuff about Jessica Penne’s return after losing her last bout in an atomweight title fight to Michelle Waterson in April. Penne will face Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc at Invicta 6 ad here is what LoCurto thought about that upcoming scrap:

She first explained that this is an interesting matchup because first of all, “Nicdali is a fan favorite.” She continued,“I think Jessica Penne is definitely going to be looking to get back on her feet and I don’t think she should look past Nicdali because Nicdali’s had her ups and downs but she’s still dangerous.”

“There’s a lot to gain for [Nicdali]. She’s not going to be backing down. She’s going to be looking to win when she comes in.”

And then she gave her thoughts on the main event between Marloes Coenen and Cris Cyborg. She started off by explaining, “I’m not looking to be disappointed; I’m not expecting to be disappointed by this fight.”

She went on by stating, “Marloes is facing her in a rematch. So I’m thinking Marloes has to have a game plan. There’s gotta be some way to beat Cyborg. Everyone can lose.”

“Everyone has a weak spot.”

Cyborg has been relatively unstoppable throughout her WMMA career but there is one aspect that we have not seen her in yet and LoCurto pointed it out when she said, “One thing is, we’ve never seen Cyborg in the championship rounds.” She continued, “I personally don’t think Cyborg is going to have a problem going five, five minute rounds but we also haven’t necessarily seen that. I don’t know if she can keep up her pace for that whole five minutes.”

“I don’t think Marloes is stronger than her but, again, everyone has a weak spot and I would never count Marloes out.”

The conversation then shifted to the physique of Cris Cyborg and how it has changed since she has been caught using steroids and since her release from the UFC after she stated she would not be able to make the 135 pound weight class to face Ronda Rousey. LoCurto commented on Cyborg’s new, leaner appearance by stating, “She has definitely started to change her physique.” She continued, “I think she’s actually trying to lose some weight and maybe walk at a lighter weight.”

The boys at Fist-Ta-Cuff then took the conversation in a new direction as they started talking about the upcoming season of TUF, which is being coached by Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey. LoCurto was first asked what she thought about Zingano’s injury and Tate coming in to replace her as a coach on the show opposite Rousey. LoCurto replied, “I was really bummed out for Cat because she had that comeback performance against Miesha Tate.”

But she doesn’t think that Tate coming in as Zingano’s replacement is going to hurt the show or its ratings too much as she explained, “I think the UFC knows what they’re doing enough so that they can’t make this season boring.” She continued by stating that this rematch between Tate and Rousey was bound to happen. LoCurto said, “I think eventually we would have see Miesha vs. Ronda again at some point.”

And she showed her excitement for the upcoming season premiere when she said, “I can’t wait to see this season with the caliber of fighters that they have on and I think it’s going to be good television.”
