Exclusive: Ricardo Lamas Explains How He Lost A Shot At The Title Hopes Win Over Koch Gets Him Back | UFC NEWS

The first guest of the evening on Sunday, January 20, 2013’s episode of bjpenn.com’s “fist-ta-cuff” radio show was UFC’s own, and one of the top featherweight’s, Ricardo Lamas. Ricardo Lamas is 12-2 MMA and riding a three-fight win streak in the UFC. He fights Eric Koch at UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Dodson January 26, 2013. He talked about his layoff from fighting because of waiting for the right opponent and then was asked if he thought this fight with Koch is for the number one contender spot, or if he’s been told anything about that.
Ricardo Lamas-
“Nothing’s been said officially, but I definitely think our fight should be for the number one contender. I mean this is actually going to be the second guy im going to fight that was suppose to be offered a title shot so, I think this should be the number one contender for sure.”
Then Ricardo was asked how the Koch fight came about?
Ricardo Lamas-
“Well basically what happened, you know around the time that Koch got injured they were thinking about matching me up with Frankie Edgar and that was suppose to happen at the end of December, uh, on the last show of the year, and then when Koch was injured they actually came to me about the title fight and I told them I would except it. And as far as I knew we were making up my contract for the title fight. Then that fell through, they called me up later and said they decided to go a different way with it and that’s when they gave it to Frankie. I was kinda left in limbo there for a little bit, I think it was maybe a week or two later they called us back and then offered us Koch and we accepted it. It made the most sense; all the other top contenders were either matched up already or injured. So we accepted that fight right away.”
