Exclusive: Pro Fighter Josh Sampo Credits Tap Dancing For Current Career Path | MMA NEWS
The second guest of the evening on Sunday nights Fist-ta-cuff radio on bjpenn.com was Josh Sampo. Josh has a fight coming up for the CFA on January 19, 2013 against Alexis Vila. Sampo is 8-2 MMA record and was 3-1 in 2012.
They started out asking him about his gym and his teammates, and talk about his training. He said if you go to his gym there are no “juice bars” it’s a real deal gym. Then they asked him how he got into MMA.
Josh Sampo – “Well it started in College, I watched it with my buddies and thought it was cool. The last year I was competing in College wrestling I was ten seconds from winning a match and going to a national finals match. After that I met Anthony Leon and he said come try out some jiu-jitsu and see what ya think. That kinda rolled over into fighting. Not long after that it just kinda took off, and then I hooked up with St. Charles MMA right before my first MMA fight. I haven’t looked back man, just kept pushing forward and went pro about two years ago.”
Then they talked about his transition from wrestling to Jiu-Jitsu, and how he didn’t like being on his back at first but he loved training jiu-jitsu right away. They also talked about his next opponent Alexis Vila and his game plan for him. Josh said he hopes he’s training hard because it’s “going to be a war.” He also talked about being ready for the stand up or ground no matter where the fight ends up.
After talking about his next fight and opponent he was asked about his tap dancing skills.
Josh Sampo – “You know if it wasn’t for my mom making me be a tap dancer growing up, there is no way I would be an athlete. I was the clumsiest, uncoordinated kid out there, but she made me keep trying it, keep trying it and it just wasn’t clicking. Then one day it just finally clicked and sports were a breeze and my coordination and so I definitely got to chalk that up to my mom for pushing me to do that.”
