EXCLUSIVE | (Part 2) TJ Grant on Fight With Henderson: “I’m Going to Hit Benson Really, Really, Really Hard” | BJPenn.com Radio

By JAKE CHASTAIN

| This week on BJPenn.com Radio our boys George and Pedro welcomed on newly-named number one UFC lightweight contender, TJ Grant. Grant, who is fresh off of the heels of his knock-out performance over Gray Maynard, is now officially set to face UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson at UFC 164 on August 31st. TJ has been a long-time guest and favorite here at BJPenn.com and his time shared with us to discuss his fight with Maynard and his upcoming title shot with Henderson is greatly appreciated. Grant spoke on several topics ranging from his win over Gray two weeks ago, his upcoming fight with Benson, his training camp heading into the title fight at the end of summer, and what he’s going to bring to Henderson in that title fight. Here are some of the highlights from Grant’s interview on BJPenn.com Radio:

TJ Grant talked to us about what kind of fighter Benson Henderson was and what kind of things he was going to have to prepare for as he goes into the cage with the reigning champion:

“He’s a tricky guy to fight, being a southpaw. You know, getting ready for the Gray Maynard fight, while it’s an incredibly dangerous fight and there are some things that he does very well, you know what you’re going to get. And with Benson there’s a whole bunch of different things that he does really well so, you know, it’s definitely a whole other can of worms but I’m just excited. Right now the work, Benson Henderson…Benson Henderson work has already started. From here on out everything starts with Henderson.”

Grant also gave his opinion on Henderson’s last title defense, in which he defeated former Strikeforce Champion Gilbert Melendez in a very close decision:

“To me it wouldn’t have mattered who won.”

“I wasn’t really disappointed in the decision but I think that Gilbert did a lot of good things in that fight though so it’s definitely something you want to watch.”

In looking back at that Henderson/Melendez fight Grant pointed out a few of the little things that Henderson does that he’s going to have to be ready for:

“You don’t think that you can overlook the fact that Benson is always kicking; Kicking the body, kicking arms. Whatever he’s kicking, he’s kicking something and it hurts.”

And in light of Henderson receiving his BJJ black-belt earlier this week TJ Grant talked about the grappling skills of Benson and how his own wrestling and grappling stacks up to The Champ’s:

“I work equally if not more on my grappling I just happen to have these fights where I’m fighting black-belts, I’m fighting tough wrestlers. You know, I’m ready to do whatever I need to do out there.”

“I feel good with my grappling. I’m always trying to get better.”

“I’m all about bread-and-butter stuff and I put my grappling up there with anyone.”

Grant then touched on how he plans to prepare for his title fight against Henderson, explaining that he wasn’t going to change locations or switch things up just because he’s fighting for the belt. He made it clear that he is going to put everything he has into this camp but successful things don’t need to be changed:

“It’s going to be all out for this camp.”

“If it aint broke don’t fix it. I get everything I need here and, uh, I mean, other people do what they do but, you k now, me personally, I just, I love where I’m at. I love being home when I’m training. I love the guys I train with. I feel like I get great training here and if I need anything else I bring people in and that’s just it, man. You know, I can have things centered around me at times. Obviously when it’s not my turn to fight it’s all about the other guys but, you know, I get a lot of attention and I feel like it shows when I fight. I do improve. I always bring another element to the table every fight. I try to anyways. And if I don’t it’s my fault. I’m proficient in something new before my fight, in training. I always try to get better and I feel like I’m doing that. So if I’m always getting better, why change it?”

Then, when asked how he saw this fight playing out on August 31st, Grant told the boys in shop what he was planning to do to Henderson to steal the belt away and start his own legacy as a lightweight champion:

“I’m going to hit him really, really, really hard.”

Watch out, Benson; TJ Grant is not complacent with just getting to a title fight…he’s looking to win that strap with a finish.
