EXCLUSIVE: Part 1 | Emanuel Newton talks about his KO victory over “King Mo” at Bellator 90 | Late Night Cageside
The Bellator season 8 light heavyweight tournament winner Emanuel Newton took time to talk to the guys at Late Night Cageside powered by bjpenn.com. Newton had to go through the guy that was the favorite to win the tournament Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. After a spinning back fist KO upset of King Mo, Newton went on to win the tournament.
Some people, including King Mo himself called Newton’s win over Mo an upset, and Mo even said himself it was a lucky shot. I believe King Mo even said in an interview that if they fought 10 times that Newton would lose 9 of those. We asked him how he felt about people calling his victory an “upset.”
“I mean, it was an upset, you know he was ranked higher than me. He was one of the ones they were expecting to go in there and give Jon Jones the challenge in the UFC, get in the UFC you know and maybe have that belt one day. So it was an upset. I have been fighting for a long time, longer than he has, he fought some good opponents and he beat them all. But I think when I was fighting Mo I was beating him from the get go, in the striking department, we were standing on the feet, I landed a couple overhand rights. I think I landed three or four strikes to the one that he landed and then I knocked him out with the spinning back fist.” Said Newton
Emanuel Newton made sure to let us know, the spinning back fist is something he trains for, so that was not a one time lucky shot. “It was perfectly timed, perfect technique I throw it all the time in training and I throw an awkward spinning back fist.” Said Newton. “It wasn’t lucky it was meant to happen he got humbled that night you know. It’s not like I coward in fear and like said uh, and threw my hand out there. Ask the guys that I train with I throw the spinning back fist all the time from awkward positions. It happened to land on his chin his hands were down, if his hands were up im sure it wouldn’t have happened, it was a mistake on his part not on my part.” Said Newton
Now that King Mo is in the summer tournament if he gets through that and Newton wins his next fight for the Bellator Light Heavyweight championship then there is a possibility of them fighting again soon. “I’m not going to say I’m going to knock him out again, it’s MMA anything can happen, if he gets passed his opponent and I get passed mine, we’ll talk then, I’m not going to sit here and run my mouth about it now” said Newton
