EXCLUSIVE | Kim Couture says Rousey vs. Cyborg would be the FOTY
Whether you love her or hate her, there is absolutely no denying that Ronda Rousey is the hottest fighter in MMA today.
I’m not even talking about her physical hotness, which some could make a case that she is leading that department as well but no other athlete in the sport is on fire right now like the former Olympic bronze medalist and current Strikeforce bantamweight champion is.
On a recent episode of BJPenn.com Radio, Kim Couture, former wife of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, discussed in detail her respect for Rousey and why she is ahead of everyone else in her division.
“With someone like [Ronda Rousey], she has been competing since she was about six years old. When you’re an Olympic level athlete, as I know I was married to one, they are on a whole other level… a whole other level above everybody else,” Couture told hosts Mitch Ciccarelli and Bryan Levick on BJPenn.com Radio.
“They have been competing with the best against the best for their entire career so their nerves and level of composure and focus just cannot be taught to someone overnight. That comes with a lifetime of experience so when it comes down to it [Rousey] doesn’t have any nerves or doubts about herself.”
Despite her unbelievable ability and talent, Rousey is often criticized by other female fighters and fans for being too brash in the media. The biggest criticism came from the way she brilliantly catapulted herself into a title fight with Miesha Tate with just four fights to her name.
Sure, she didn’t earn the opportunity in the traditional sense but she backed everything up and took the belt home with her when it was all said and done. Even after she dethroned Tate, we still heard the ridiculous nonsense from the haters and that is something that Couture disagrees with.
“I think that she’s doing a great job of pushing [Women’s MMA] and there are plenty of haters out there which there always will be but whatever she’s doing is working so we all should be thankful and appreciative of that because she’s getting a lot of eyeballs on the females so I have to give her kudos.”
Fresh off her sixth consecutive first round armbar victory over former champ Sarah Kaufman, Rousey has her eyes and mouth set on a potential super-fight with another female MMA icon, Christiane “Cyborg” Santos.
Rousey has been very vocal about Santos testing positive for a banned substance, calling “Cyborg” a career-long cheater and even went as far as to call her out to fight in the parking lot following her submission over Kaufman.
Forging a close friendship with “Cyborg” recently, Couture supports her friend but doesn’t feel the need to get involved in the drama. When it comes to the Cyborg-Rousey rivalry, Couture looks at it from a fan’s perspective and, just like the rest of us, wants to see them fight.
“There’s no arguing that [Cyborg and Ronda Rousey] can’t stand each other and they want to fight. I’m a little older so I don’t get caught up in all of the high school [expletive] but I respect both athletes and obviously I’m friends with Cyborg,” Couture said.
“I stay out of the personal vendettas that [my friends] have and I like to see the positives on all sides of things. I’d like to see that fight happen and I think it’s going to be the fight of the year when it does happen.”
Whether or not that bout will actually happen next is still up in the air but anyone who pays attention to MMA knows how dangerous both of these competitors are. Rousey brings to the table a high-level Olympic pedigree of Judo and she won’t hesitate to snap an arm if given the opportunity. Santos, on the other hand, is the deadliest female striker in the entire sport with solid BJJ to boot.
If anyone is going to give Rousey a competitive bout, it is going to be “Cyborg” and Couture believes she has the best chance of putting a thrashing on her.
“I honestly think [Cyborg] is the only one that’s going to give Rousey a hard time but I definitely think Cyborg’s power and experience is pretty hard to beat. Rousey is definitely not going to get Cyborg backing up and definitely isn’t going to get in her head so it would be an interesting outcome.”
Again, it is uncertain if this fight will happen anytime soon but one thing is certain, there is more interest in this matchup than a majority of upcoming male fights. We will just have to keep our fingers crossed that an agreement can be reached between both parties at a reasonable weight.
