Exclusive | Josh Thomson Not Impressed With Jones vs. Evans

Josh Thomson faces Gilbert Melendez on May 19 in a rubber match for the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship. The fight has a lot of hype surrounding it because both fighters are ranked in in the top 10 of all credible MMA polling sources. Thomson has never been one to buy in to the hype of any of his fights or MMA fights in general because of what he believes are inevitable negative effects on performance.
“Over the years I’ve found that when there is so much hype surrounding a fight, especially when the two guys hate each other like Jones and Evans they end up fighting such a conservative fight. Neither guy wants to lose to the other. It turns in to such a boring fight and never lives up to the hype it was given”, said Josh.
Sometimes even with the momentum of the mainstream MMA hype machine a fight can fail to draw interest. Living in San Jose, California and surrounding himself daily with teammates and trainers almost makes Josh immune – even when it is the touted grudge match between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and the number one contender for Jones’s belt, Rashad Evans.
“To be honest that Jones and Rashad fight didn’t interest me or anyone one in my gym really. They’re good fighters, but it wasn’t one of our guys in there, or a fight that really interested any of us. We’ve seen those types of fights before that start out with a lot of talk and just don’t deliver what they promise for one reason or another”, Thomson stated.
The effects of the hype machine aren’t always visible to the casual MMA fan’s eyes. Fighters like Josh who have been in the spotlight themselves can spot it easily.
“You usually saw Jon Jones fight a little more entertaining before that and Rashad is usually more aggressive and you didn’t see any of that. It ended up being kind of a lackluster fight. A lot of our guys have a lot of experience and we knew that was going to happen. It could have been a lot more memorable”, finished Thomson.
Jon Jones defeated Rashad Evans by unanimous decision at UFC 145.

not as nearly as boring as your last fight Mr. Thompson
Ha like he should be talking about anyone elses fight in a negative way about it being boring. His last fight he was either so scared of KJ or just wanted to lay on him cause he has a crush on him, he caused the fight to be boring and unworthy of a win
Jones vs Evan’s wasn’t that bad. This was a good matchup, there was a back story and they are two great fighters. What else does he want? Sounds like he’s just envious of not being in the UFC.
No shit!!! Look who’s talking. Strikeforce must really be dead at 155 for this fool to get another crack at it…
Jones-Evans was an epic fight compared to Thompsons fitching display in his fight against KJ Noons.
This guy is delusional if he actually thinks he is in a position to speak out about fights being impressive or not.
I don’t think he Fitched Noons. I think he Thomsoned Noons. A Thomsoning is an extreme form of Fitching. You just don’t dry hump the shit out of your opponent: When you Thomson, you make sweet, passionate love to your opponent. With your clothes on. Shorts at least.
Hahaha! That is funny.
now thats funny! Yeah thomson is the last fighter that should be “fitching” anyone. might get socked in eye after the fight. But again Thomson trains with Fitch
His last fight might not have been entertaining, but also take into consideration he hadn’t fought for over a year before the Noons fight. he prob just wanted to make sure he got a win. And he even said in the post fight interview he fought like sh-t.
He just wanted the win but yet it’s exactly what he bitches about in the Jones vs Evans fight.
I agree to a point, but i don’t consider Noons/Thompson a fight that was seriously hyped. lolz! I just wanted to point out a possible reason for his lackluster performance against Noons.
Yet his exact complaint is they fought not to lose…….hypocrite!!!!
I agree Josh Thompson is jealous he isn’t in the UFC and just wants to be talked about. He won’t be talking after Melendez beats him…again
Does anybody really care what Josh Thompson thinks?
I agree i doubt Rashad and Jones even know the little butt pirate thomson let alone give a rats ass what he thinks.
He’s pretty much right.
Didn’t Thompson have the most boring fight in zuffa history.
He makes a great point about them fighting more conservatively when there’s more on the line. That shit happens every time we get one of these “grudge matches” I just hope that doesn’t happen with Silva vs Sonnen two.
I am sure Bones and Evans really care of what this schmuck thinks.
hahaha who gives a mad **** what josh thompson thinks Gilbert Melendez is about to smash on his bitchass. The Jones vs Evans fight was a good fight they both cracked eachother at least it wasn’t a suckfest like Thompsons last fight. Tell that fool to go get flying headkick KO’d to Mars again.
Rashad/Jones was alot more exciting than any GSP fight we will ever see for rest of his career. GSP will never enage or go toe to toe again. I will however always remember the beating GSP put on Fitch. I have never seen anyone so beat up in my life. Most judges had that fight 50-43. 2 10-8 rounds for GSP. That was last time we all saw the OLD GSP.
okay, gotta stop stories about nobodys here on this website.
I agree
his last fight was boring as hell….
