Exclusive | Jacob Volkmann on Diaz, Sass, Mayhem debate, and more

Jacob Volkmann is riding a 5 fight win streak. That is not a common feat in the UFC if you were to scour the records of its many fighters. Up next for Jacob is Paul Sass at UFC 146. Sass is a submission specialist with a dangerous set of base skills. Volkmann has acknowledged them, and is prepared to deal with them.

“Sass is dangerous. His strengths are going to be a lot different. It’s a dangerous fight for a wrestler. Wrestlers like to posture up and pass or punch. That’s where he gets the guys in a scramble sometimes. I know what I need to do to avoid it”.

His last win was over TUF season 8 winner Efrain Escudero, but it seemed like the UFC brass did not see Jacob’s 5th straight win as warranting a top 10 opponent. Volkmann admitted that it did bother him.

“How many until I get a top 10 guy. I don’t know 20″, Volkmann joked. “But, yeah, it’s pretty upsetting. It bothered me that I didn’t get one this time. That would be nice, but I have no idea what they’re goal for me is right now”.

Most fighters with a 5-2 record in the UFC would feel very secure in their jobs, but Jacob has been vocal as of late that his case is different.

“Like I said they don’t like my style. I don’t have too many fans out there, and I don’t think any of the fans would miss me when I’m gone. To be honest”.

After the anti-Obama comments Jacob made following his wins at both UFC 125, and UFC 141, one of which warranted a visit from the US Secret Service, he has found a new nemesis. He wouldn’t say exactly who it was, but he gave us a clue.

“Will I say it after I win. I think I will. My corner advised me highly not to but I’m going to. It’s not Obama this time. I gave a pretty good hint on another site. It was more a specific person, kind of, but there are a group of people who make decisions on some things. You almost had me there for a second. I won’t say anymore”.

Jacob was also vocal on the recent Nick Diaz suspension for marijuana usage.

“He knew there was a rule against it. He also knew that if he got caught he would have been suspended. He’s the fool that actually took the chance of getting the blood test, and getting caught for doing what he did. It’s a rule. It’s set. There’s no way around it. He obviously wasn’t thinking”.

Another hot topic has been testosterone replacement therapy or TRT, as it is called. Jacob doesn’t see what the big deal is about it.

“As long as it’s regulated by a medical doctor then I don’t care. If it’s something they need to function. If it’s for replacement it’s not going to increase your performance above anybody else. It will make you perform as if your levels were normal. I think a lot of people are confused about it. Chael gets a bad rap for his. I don’t know exactly what his problem is why he can’t get the testosterone or if he needs a replacement I think it’s fair. This is his life and his job. If he doesn’t get that testosterone replacement is he going to perform as well. I have no idea. If he doesn’t perform as well he doesn’t pay the bills. It’s as simple as that.”

Volkmann is also aware that people posting on the internet forums would strongly disagree with his opinions. Again, Jacob didn’t seem phased. He had some choice words for his detractors.

“The forum guys are a bunch of turds who sit in cubicles. They don’t understand that these are athletes and fighting is their income. It’s not like he’s making an ungodly amount of money where he doesn’t have to do this. He does it because it’s his income. I hate forum dwellers. I go on the internet every once in a while so I can vent on the guys who hate me”.

Volkmann is happy where he’s at, but that wasn’t always the case. Bellator has left a bad taste in his mouth, and he never intends to return to organization if he can help it.

“I don’t want to go back to Bellator. I have a grudge with Bellator. I had a fight May 15 in like 2008 or 2009. I was supposed to fight again. I took a short notice fight against Jesse Juarez. It was supposed to be June 5. It was a week before the fight. I had all my blood work done and all that other crap I had to do for the commission. Bellator called me and said Jesse Juarez doesn’t want to fight you so we gave him someone else. Are you serious. They gave him someone else to fight and I was stuck with no one. They put me on a nine month no fight streak. Eventually I got out of my Bellator contract because they weren’t giving me fights. The UFC was interested and I took that short notice fight against Paulo Thiago”

After his fight with Paul Sass this weekend at UFC 146 a new challenge may be on the horizon for Volkmann. One that doesn’t involve 4 oz. gloves and an Octagon.

“Mayhem Miller has been tweeting that he wants to debate me on politics. Seriously, I think he wants to vote for Obama again after all of Obama’s crap. I might have to talk some sense in to him. I don’t anything about Miller’s educational background. I haven’t seen the guy fight, but if he wants to debate me I will do it”.

Jacob Volkmann is scheduled to fight Paul Sass at UFC 146 this weekend.

I’m pretty sure most ppl, not all but most don’t have a problem with Chael’s “need” for trt but his abuse of trt. I.E. – his 16:1 ratio following the first Silva fight, that is unquestionably CHEATING.

    • MMA Knowitall says:

No no no the 16:1 was Chael’s normal ratio because he’s an Uber-man to begin with. And a republican because anyone who’s an Uber-man would automatically be a republican because men with 16:1 natural testosterone levels have the big balls requisite to being republicans and running on the republican ticket for political offices. And pulling shady real estate deals. Seriously though that’s about as much sense as Volkmann made in the article. And no, I’m not a fan. Sometimes I honestly believe half these guys have pumping hormones so long they honestly believe elevated levels actually are ‘normal’. What else…oh yeah I do sit at a cubicle. I also am an active duty veteran, drilling reservist, college graduate, like to exercise and ride my HD and am not a couch potato. Hey Jacob maybe you outta have a little bit more fucking respect for the people that allow you the opp to showcase your skills and earn your income (I found this guy boring as hell the one fight I watched him in). And yeah, it’s funny how he comes down on Nick Diaz for ‘cheating’ yet justifies what Sonnen did. Laughable.

  2. Dick Diaz says:

lol they should debate; Volkmann and Mayhem

  3. Ian says:

Dude this guy just became my favorite fighter, besides the diaz comment on maryjane i think this guy is awesome.

  4. Xaninho says:

    He’s a boring cocksucker.

He states TRT helps fighters to function normally and restores their testosterone levels to ‘normal’ 6:1 is condoned and that’s far from average or normal by the way……so it’s ok to use it.

What’s the difference with Diaz needing weed to function normally? The dude has adhd and anxieties. Apparently weed calms him down so he can focus his thoughts more like a person without adhd and anxieties.

    • Thurgood Jenkins says:

I don’t necessarily have a problem with fighters using TRT. And I’m one who thinks marijuana should be legalized immediately, if only for the billions upon billions of dollars the government would seek to make from taxation, like alcohol (I don’t smoke weed either).

However, he states TRT is legit as long as TRT is regulated by a doctor, but condemns Diaz. If Diaz is legally allowed to use marijuana medically, then isn’t that essentially regulated by a doctor as well? To me, that appears as completely conflicting logic.

      • Xaninho says:

Yes that’s what I mean. But the thing about ‘regulated’ TRT is that 6:1 is condoned, and that is not average and certainly not normal. So people like Sonnen might have 2:1 and juice it up to 6:1, it’s still not fair.

  5. dave says:

    i like his his style

  6. Thom says:

He’s one of the few pro athletes I actually hate…

  7. Yourfavfighterisgay says:

Who could Volkmann be talking about next? Who do jew think it is?

  8. Canilive says:

Hey Jacob vent on this, you lay and pray! Win couple more fights and challenge Nate Diaz, see what happens. Actually prove me wrong and keep it standing with one fighter for a round for a change

  9. Brend0magic says:

Go Volkman, stand up for what you believe in, do your own thing and fuck the haters. Especially the mma trolls who’ve never been in a boxing ring, stepped into a cage or even a gym for that matter.

  10. D-yan says:

get on top and punch in the face!

  11. Fighter and Writer says:

Who is this guy? More importantly, who edits these articles? Their “they’re” there was wrong. Brush up on your English

  12. Numba1Ghani says:

did this fool just admit that he knows he has no fans, ppl hate his style, and if he got cut no one would give two shits? this fool is fuckin pathetic hahah

  13. Analyser says:

As long as he wins and isn’t abusing the rules I am all for Volkmann, ‘boring’ style or not.. I mean what dictates a good fighter? Someone who entertains a crowd yet ends up being out for a year on injury? Or someone who can put guys into his win column and get out of the cage relatively unscathed? For me it is a combination of both I suppose but I can sure appreciate Volkmann for his talent in the cage.. It really boils down to your personal opinion on MMA and what you enjoy watching. Each to their own.
