Edgar Set On Staying At Featherweight, Wants Cub Swanson In Five-Rounder | UFC NEWS

It did not take long for Frankie Edgar to decide that he will continue his goal of winning the Featherweight title. This was solidified by the recent report on UFC Tonight that he wants to fight Cub Swanson in a Main Event five round fight. It has been just over two weeks since Edgar suffered his third loss in a row against Jose Aldo at UFC 156, that bout marked his seventh straight title fight. Considering how close that fight ended up made the decision easy.

Swanson is riding a four fight win streak, with his last win coming against highly regarded top prospect Dustin Poirier at UFC on FUEL TV 7. Before that he recorded three straight KO victories over George Roop, Ross Pearson, and Charles Oliveira. This recent run of success has pushed his name into a long list of contenders in the already talent rich pool at Featherweight. A fight against Edgar could propel Swanson into a title fight.

After fighting the very best at Lightweight in the past two years, Edgar made the choice to drop to Featherweight when he was offered an immediate title shot. There was no guarantee he would stay at that weight class win or lose. Edgar has, in the past, dismissed pleas by fans and UFC President Dana White to move down a lighter weight class. Getting the title shot was that extra push he needed.

After losing to Aldo, a decision on what weight class he would continue his career had to be made. Calling out Swanson is the perfect way to keep his name in the mix as a top contender at Featherweight. It probably does not propel him into a title fight right away, but a victory shows that he is back on track after going just 2-3-1 in his last six fights.

The Featherweight division will stay in limbo through the end of the year, as another Lightweight will be dropping down to fight for the title. Anthony Pettis vs. current UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo is slated for August 3rd.

  1. krafty11 says:

wonder why he asked fora 5 round fight?? I guess he is hoping for another dec. win.. wait… those havent worked out so well recently..

  2. Exactly! says:

And Edgar will probably get the headliner on FX/Fuel, which will warrant the 5-round fight. He would get dusted in a three rounder because his whole game is endurance. He can’t physically beat a fighter in 3 rounds or less, so he out cardios them in five! He’ll bounce around for 5 rounds, get his face beaten, and act disappointed when he loses the decision. This story is old, man. Edgar was on borrowed time after he was given the title in Abu Dhabi against Penn. His fans (which includes Dana and the Fertitas) will tire of his underdog act and make him climb the mountain like all other contenders. Only then life in the FW division will be fair.

  3. Hahaha says:

^^^^^^^^ If edgar cant win a 3 round fight how do you explain his road to a title shot??????????????? I hated edgar to begin with but after watching his recent fights even the losses i have huge respect for the man,I gave the aldo fight to him actually i thought he won 3,4 and 5 and this coming from someone who hated frankie edgars guts! He has to be a top ten p4p contender at this point i mean who has edgar ever lost to convincingly?

    • BringFitchBack says:

You are right on. Edgar has barely lost in ALL his fights. Some could argue he has barely won in his fights as well. I agree with you too on the Aldo fight after that first round, he came back and he, arguably, won 3,4,5. I also think he could have won Bendo II as well. He’s top of the food chain in lightweight and featherweight. I don’t see anybody in featherweight, except Aldo beating him. Maybe Barao if he comes up when Aldo goes to 55. But those three guys are equal. Frankie should be able to fight whoever he wants except the champs at this point.

    • Why do you like Edgar so much? says:

Give reasons and examples–what fight did he display what you like about him so much.

  4. 123 says:

love too see him fight ross pearson at lightweight.. or chad mendes at featherweight

  5. 757 says:

Edgar puts on great fights. That’s why he isn’t going anywhere. He fights top flight guys and puts on monster shows. Anyone who can’t see that shouldn’t watch the sport. Exactly ^^^^your comment is completely wrong. He knocked Maynard out, he lost two close fights with Henderson, and really he won at least the second one for sure, and the when has anyone fought Aldo like that. Really you could make the statement that he won that won also. This kid is tough as they come. Yeah 123^^^let’s see him fight both of those guys. I don’t see either one of them calling him out or saying much. Pearson is tough and has some class. Really Mendes shoots his mouth off all the time, but he won’t this time because FE will make hm fight at a level far above Cody Mckenzie….where Mendes still is.

  6. Dannyway says:

It’s silly to read the insults thrown at Edgar. Or even call for him to be cut. Then I guess BJ should be cut as well?

  7. The Fact Is says:

Edgar lost three consecutive times. What is he going to do now? Drop 10 more pounds and fight Barao?

Now if we’re thinking “what if,” what if BJ Penn was judged to be the winner in the first Edgar fight, like he should’ve. Does Edgar get a rematch? And why was the rematch given to Penn? Because many thought Penn had won. Why was Edgar given the rematch with Bendo? Look back at the comments at that time and you’ll see that MANY, including the impartial, thought Bendo won clearly. But the UFC wanted Edgar to hold the belt, so they gave Edgar the rematch. But, the UFC doesn’t control the judges. Dana gives Edgar an Aldo rematch and he’ll reveal that he is in love with Edgar! But he wants to keep that a secret, so he won’t.

BTW, Aldo clearly won. Edgar put up a great LOSING effort.

  8. Hahaha says:

Lets not forget what i also said,i hated Frankie Edgar for beating my boy bj.Watching Maynard batter him for how many rounds during those next 2 fights was a dream come true i loved it,well the first fight anyway. That first round was probably up there with the worst sustained beating of a fighter i have ever witnessed! 10-8 round …… shit it could have been 10-7.But then look what happened,Edgar comes back showing more heart and durability than any fighter i have ever seen regardless of which contact sport we are talking about. This is what started to win me over fast forward to the rubber match and its like daaaaaamn here we go again then BAAAM Edgar finishes Gray! I was sold at this point that i was watching an exeptional talent both physically and mentally. He has all the tools, speed head movement footwork granite chin cardio and more heart than any fighter walking this earth! But probably the most endearing thing about Edgar is that he will fight ANYBODY ANYTIME ANYPLACE ANY WEIGHT! I mean who drops a weight class and takes on the champ at that weight in their first outing at that weight?and not just any champ we are talking Aldo ffs,Edgar thats who.I dont know why anyone would talk about cutting BJ either because like Edgar he will fight anyone at any weight even to his detriment(Machida at hw )for example. This is the true measure of a fighter in my estimation, forget how many ticks in the w column. The fight game is all about one word for me,entertainment! And every Edgar fight is an edge of your seat affair.Thats how i started off hating the man, hate turned to respect and with the respect came admiration of a guy the ufc could do with 10 of.Mad props Frankie you are the man!

    • This dude's a CHICK ! says:

or gay, one or the other. But this is a clear example on why fans of Edgar like Edgar: “Edgar comes back showing more heart and durability” “all the tools, speed head movement footwork granite chin cardio and more heart than any fighter walking this earth.” It’s not his BJJ, striking, GNP, wrestling even. It’s his cardio! It’s his heart! Granted two important aspect to a fighter, BUT NOT THE MAIN ASPECTS TO A FIGHTER! Is he a fighter or survivor? So endearing, yes?

  9. hendoooo says:

I’m sorry but that fight was far from close. I watched it a third time and decided that it was a 49-46 victory for Aldo. Frankie might have “controlled” the ring but that does not override aldos clean striking and hit success rate. This coming from a fan of Frankie. I’m glad hes not talking about fighting Aldo straight away, he knows hes got work to do.
