Duke Roufus Speaks on Pettis vs Aldo and Why He Believes Pettis Will Take the Title

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis’ coach, Duke Roufus, talked with Luke Thomas on the differences of Pettis’ striking compared to other lightweights, as well as featherweight Champ Jose Aldo in an in-depth interview over the weekend. Pettis is looking to dethrone the UFC Featherweight Champ this August and Roufus believes Anthony has the Edge one needs to beat the long reigning champion. He believes ‘Showtime’ in his experience from Tae Kwon Do at 5 years old, to the Muay Thai and Dutch Style Kickboxing he trains today, has an advantage over any fighter he encounters in the octagon. Just his leg dexterity alone is enough to make the former K1 Fighter confident in his student’s striking stating, “Wherever Anthony kicks is going to do damage,” as we saw in his last bout when he demolished Donald Cerrone with kicks to the liver on his way to a KO over the ‘Cowboy’, a feat we have never seen against the WEC and UFC veteran.

But its not just the kicks that Pettis’ coach thinks makes him the better striker, its the punches as well. Roufus emphasizes on the importance of setting up kicks with punches and how Pettis is better equipped to do so with a smooth style, throwing a hard punch and using his momentum to change stances to deliver a kick the opponent would have never seen coming. When asked if a fighter would be better suited for MMA having better punches or kicks Roufus felt a fighter would need a good mixture of both kicks and punches and know how and when to use them saying “I think kicking is cool but if you don’t have punches to set it up it isn’t a pragmatic style.”

Aldo is surely going to try to use his powerful leg kicks in this fight which he has in every fight in the past. He is a powerful striker with his legs and hands but Roufus states, “Anthony’s kick defense will shut Aldo’s leg kicks down.” He believes fighters just don’t defend the leg kicks like Thai and Dutch Fighters, who learn to defend kicks from early on in their training.

Pettis’ coach elaborated on the fact that they train kickboxing in relation to MMA, and believes that is why his fighters have such great striking when it comes to their performances in the octagon. They train to use their striking in the cage, and to use the octagon itself to their advantage at times, shown in Pettis’ fight against now lightweight Champ Benson Henderson when he used his infamous “Showtime Kick” to drop the Champ and earn him the WEC lightweight title.

If Aldo is to keep the Featherweight Strap he’ll have to watch out for Pettis’ flashy kicks when they face each other in August for the UFC Featherweight Championship, a belt Duke Roufus believes has Anthony Pettis’ name written all over it.

Of course Rufus is going to say that… He’s Pettis coach…
But he ain’t even top 5 in striking…he gets raped by wrestlers …. he tko’s Cowboy with a body kick and now everybody thinks he can beat Jose…Aldo is a Beast! With a crazy winnng streak.. . Ill quote my boy Anderson Silva.. “if Aldo came to MW I would retire”. Aldo will make Pettis his bitch in under 2rds..

    • danielrchargers says:

T.Daddy do you even watch that fight!?
Pettis picked Cerrone apart in less than 1round! you don’t know jack crap squat about mma huh!? jeez you make it sound like TKO’ing a man with only a body kick is unimpressive… think about it. you can take a man out with only a kick to the body, that’s called POWER. Being fucking deadly.

      • T.DADDY says:

Yeah I’m from chicago.. I was at the fights.. Pettis kicked Cowboy and he went down.. he didn’t pick him apart… He landed a good kick… Doesn’t make him a Top striker.. just like JDS landed a lucky punch on Cain… Then look what happened in the rematch… Its funny Rufus don’t talk about Pettis wrestling… Cuz he has none… He wants to fight strikers only cuz that’s his only chance off winning… He knew if he stayed at 55 and fought Benson he woulda lost cuz Benson would use his wrestling this time instead of standing the whole fight…

    • hellsklown says:

WOW thats stunning how stupid it is to say that. you are your letting personal bias cloud the fact that pettis is on hell of a striker one of the best definatly top five in the respective divisions he has and will fight in in the ufc. jose is a hell of a striker too his leg kicks are nasty but he has never faced a guy with the striking versatility of pettis. closest one is mark hommanick… stop being a jose nuthugger dude

    • Sasquatch says:

Keep suckin back Aldo’s baby batter biatch!

    • stoner_sez says:

Well T. Daddy its a good thing jose aldo doesnt have wrestling neither then right?? so we can expect a standup battle

  2. Big Daddy says:

I’m pretty sure any Muay Thai dojo shows fighters how to defend leg kicks. It’s an interesting fight but I see Pettis getting demolished by Aldo in every way. . If he couldn’t defend td from Guida, what makes them think they’ll neutralize aldo’s leg kicks?

  3. dugesmma says:

R u stupid where does defending a take down come into play with leg kick dfense lol prob the most uneducated comments i heard in awhile

  4. MMAdro says:

I should have known that Talkshit(that’s what the T stands for I figured it out)Daddy would be the 1st to comment here, he sits and waits at his computer on this site and stalks Pettis’ name to pop up so he can come and be a shit talker like normal, but yet the only thing that he can ever say is that he got “raped by Guida”. You sir have what professional mental therapists and psychologist call celebrity worship syndrome and it is in the severe category, seek some help immediately before you find yourself dressed up as a cutman in Anthony’s locker room with a boxcutter attempting to kill him one day.

  5. Big Daddy says:

@dugesmma if you knew how to read English you would know what I meant with that comment. When you learn how to read you can start giving your expert advise dumbass!

  6. Ainokea says:

I think it would be a great matchup. Pettis got the Cardio. Aldo got the Takedowns. Both got impeccable striking. I’d much rather watch this than Aldo vs. Edgar any day of the week. Not sure who will take it, I like them both, but whatever happens, I’ll be happy either way. Anything could Happen whether its a leg kick TKO or another “Showtime” kick. Can’t wait.

    • stoner_sez says:

when does aldo get takedowns??? hes a stand up fighter and honestly i feel pettis has the edge on the ground, hes constantly attacking off his back when in that position, aldo (along with many brazilians) claim to be natural practitioners and always hype themselves up, yet what happened when aldo was on his back against hominick?? he didnt even attack he just defended…same in the edgar fight, he wanted no part of being on the ground…im just hoping for one hell of a fight for us to enjoy

  7. mean170 says:

I like this match-up. I see Aldo winning and showing that he is truly an elite fighter. People are always saying the 145lb division is weak. I think it’s just Aldo being head and shoulders above the rest(Mendes, Edgar, Zombie, Swanson, Porier).

  8. los says:

After watching the pettis-cerrone fight I will never underestimate pettis again. He put up a great fight and won against Bendo, destroyed lauzon and cerrone. It’s gonna be a war between him and aldo. can’t wait to see who comes out on top!

  9. D-rak says:

If Pettis is so bad ass how did he lose to clay and earn a split decision win over Jeremy Stephens…aldo will whoop that ass

  10. STANDALONEDIEALONE says:

I THINK IF ANYBODYS GONNA BEAT ALDO, ITS GONNA BE PETTIS THIS GO AROUND FOR THAT GOLD. DONT GET ME WRONG I AM A BIG ALDO FAN, NEVER BEEN A WAGON JUMPER. HONESTLY I THOUGHT FRANKIE WAS GOING TO BE TOO MUCH FOR ALDO TO HANDLE AND BEAT HIM, I WAS SUPER WRONG THOUGH. IM DOWN TO BET MY BJPENN FORUM ACCOUNT THAT PETTIS WILL BEAT ALDO AUG 3, 2013 IF EVERYTHING GOES AS THEIR PLANNED FIGHT, NO INJURIES, ETC. THAT BET IS ONLY FOR NOT TO TYPE BACK ON BJPENN.COM FORUM ONLY. IF ANYBODYS UP FOR IT, LET ME KNOW? ITS MAKES THINGS A LITTLE MORE EXCITING ON THESE FORUMS I THINK. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN WHEN ALDO VS. PETTIS GO TO WAR..

  11. Jay says:

honestly whenever anyone gets on here who hates on Pettis the first thing they go for is the Guida fight. What people fail to mention is that since that fight Pettis has worked really hard on his wrestling with olympic calibre wrestler Ben Askrin (may have spelt that wrong)I laugh at you Aldo nut huggers if you are banking on that Guida fight as your sole evidence that Pettis is going to lose…while be prepared for the shock of your life because Pettis is going to win on Aug.3rd.

It is a huge insult to Pettis to say that he is not one of the top 5 strikers in the UFC. He is unpredictable, technical and very powerful, ask Lauzon, Cerrone, Danny Castillio, and Ben Henderson about his ablility to strike. Not only is he one of hte top 5 strikers in the UFC I would put him in the top 3.

Jose Aldo has incredible striking, but it becomes a lot less impressive as the fight goes on. In the later rounds against Hominick and Edgar, Aldo’s striking was unreal in the first two rounds but began to unravel from rounds 3-5. Pettis take this fight I am quite confident in that statement. This kid is going to do incredible things in the sport.

    • krafty11 says:

He hasnt had to use his wrestling much since the Guida fight.. two fast KO’s and the Stephens split-decision win. personally, I think Hominick has better technical striking than Pettis, but Pettis is flashier with his striking. Just wondering how the weight cut is gonna affect him. He has mentioned he only has to cut 12 lbs or so for the fight, which dont seem like a lot, but who knows how its gonna affect his cardio/ speed. Aldo is used to the weight cut.. I do expect a great fight regardless. But Aldo hasn’t been proven wrong yet, and he has fought all types: grapplers and strikers and beaten them all.. So I will stick with him keeping the belt. Just my opinion..

  12. 123 says:

well basically there isnt going to be any wrestling in this superfight, its 2 of the most exciting mma fighters in the world doing crazy stuff.. cant wait, best fight ever.

  13. Thank you!! says:

To all the guys who recognize pettis’s level of fighting and how he is definitely a HUGE threat to the strap.. Thank you!! I actually haven’t visited his site in a few weeks or ever since the fight was announced bc I was soooooo sick of seeing all the Aldo nughuggers just come here and make stupid comments. The sad part is that this site has turned into a bunch of ppl who just sit here ALL DAY and wait for any article to come out that has anything to do with an opponent from Brazil in particular. I’m not trying to distract away from the article, but seriously.. All I see on here are nothing but Silva and Aldo nughuggers. And don’t get me wrong. They are at the top for a reason, but there comes a point when it gets kind of creepy when you never give ANY of their competitors any agnowledgement of their skills. And just go absolutely crazy when someone talks crap on the love of your lives.. Seriously, get a life and I’m sorry but Pettis has shown nothing but sick ass skill and if you don’t think that he is a threat to this belt, then you sir(s) need to go get a cat scan or maybe just lay off the crack pipe.. Just my opinion though. :]

  14. Jackson says:

Im a Aldo fan.. but if y’all think Aldo is gonna keep that belt in august you’re fucking delusional. It’s Showtime on August 3rd…!

  15. youguysallneedtodierightnow says:

you r all fagots, i cnt believe hw u all sit and argue about whose better and who will win etc. You’re not keyboard warriors cos warrior has a manly and positive connotation. You’re keyboard cunts. Anyone can win. Some fighters show better technique etc and all have different strengths. But you aholes who come on here and say this guy will walk thru this guy and ‘clown’ so and so, you make me fkn sick. Why dnt u losers get a life and stop being such childish morons. Its pathetic. Before u get angry at me just consider how pathetic you are and try to change.

  16. Tj says:

People love to hate. Pettis lost to one wrestler by lay and pray, and he has no TDD? Y’all act like everyone takes him down and owns him. Rewatch the guida fight, the entire fight is Pettis throwing sub attempts. Not to say the fight with Aldo will be easy, but Aldo has no easy matchup with Pettis. No one up here can name a lightweight or featherweight in the ufc that’s been putting lights out like Pettis.

    • Sasquatch says:

      EXf**kingACTLY!!

    • TheTopDown says:

Let’s take a look at Pettis’ resume: Starting with Benson, he barely wins because of a kick off the fence, Guida smothers him and he loses, Stephens he splits(looked like he lost) then he beats Joe and Donald convincingly. Not sure “lights out” describes your boy accurately….

  17. Andy says:

Hey douche bag if u don’t like peeps talkin about who’s going to win and how stay off the f cking site…it’s pretty simple
