Douglas Lima Injured Again, Out of Bellator 97 Tourney Finals Fight with Ben Saunders
| The injury bug just won’t stop biting Bellator welterweight Douglas Lima (24-5 MMA, 6-1 BFC). The tournament finalist has apparently suffered a rib injury has force him out of a rematch and Season 8 tournament final with Ben Saunders (16-5-2 MMA, 7-2 BFC). Sherdog.com first reported the initial rumor and Lima later verified the news via his twitter account.
The finals bout was supposed to be part of Bellator 97, which takes place July 31st at the Santa Ana Center in Albuquerque, N.M. They were expected to be part of the Spike TV-televised main card following prelims on Spike.com. It’s not clear if Saunders will remain on the card.
This is the second time the tournament final has been postponed as the fight was rescheduled for the late July card after Lima broke his hand in his semi-final victory over Bryan Baker.
Lima and Saunders first fought in late 2011 at Bellator 57, which hosted the Season 5 welterweight tournament final. Lima won that fight with a second round KO of Saunders but went on to lose in his title fight against Ben Askren.
Since then Lima has won three fights, all via knockout. He is considered by many to be the top contender in the Bellator welterweight stables but injuries continue to hold him back from proving it. Saunders is also on a three-fight win streak. It is not clear whether Saunders will stay on the Bellator 97 card and fight a replacement or if the fight with Lima will again be pushed back to a later date.
Here is how the Bellltor 97 card looks as of right now:
- Champ Michael Chandler vs. David Rickels – for lightweight title
- Champ Ben Askren vs. Andrey Koreshkov – for welterweight title
- Rob Emerson vs. Patricio Freire
