Derrick Mehmem Set To Face Gian Villante At “Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier”

Strikeforce officials have put together a light-heavyweight bout between Derrick Mehmem vs. Gian Villante (pictured) for next month’s “Barnett vs. Cormier” event.
“Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier is set to take place from San Jose’s HP Pavilion on May 19. In the main event the promotion will conclude their heavyweight grand prix with the final matchup between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier.
Mehmem last saw action last night during the WMMA pay-per-view event in a losing effort to Rodney Wallace. Prior to last night’s defeat he had a successful debut under the Strikeforce banner with a victory over Roy Jones. With the most recent loss he is now 4-2 in his last six-fights.
Villante is a four-fight Strikeforce veteran. Upon earning his contract with the promotion he was put against the very tough Chad Griggs where he was unable to capture victory. He went on to face Lorenz Larkins, but against lost. As of late he turned his career around and regained some much needed momentum and won his last two fights for the promotion.
